For the people that said it would take years to learn to play a zone, I guess even Rutgers can figure out how to play one.

Brandin Knight said at the Court Club meeting that we were going to play some zone today and we did a good job for the first time playing one. Now we can change up some on how we play on defense.

Best of Luck,
Groz

I was very very skeptical. I was wrong. We need to rebound better out of it and I’m not sure it’s a long term solution, but if it was me who argued with you... I was wrong. It helped tonight

As long as you switch it up and don’t stay too long in it. We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds out of it but OSU did seem confused at times and it was effective tonight.

Whenever you play zone, rebounding is difficult because the opponent isn't standing next to you for an easy boxout. Understand where to be on shots and executing boxouts is the last part of an excellent zone team.

Might need to play some next game also, Minnesota struggled last game against the Maryland zone,

I have been one of the big mouths promoting zone. Glad to see us working it in. We don’t have great quickness or great athleticism, but what we have is length and that, to me, equals zone.

That said, I do not think we’re playing it well yet. We were lucky they missed some clean looks. once we get really comfortable in it, it’ll be a nice weapon.

You are a good man admitting that you were wrong when me and you went back and forth talking about playing a zone.(Of course it is only 1 game)

Our length actually should allow us to play a decent zone. Only time will tell how good we can be at playing it. If we keep getting better, I would not be surprised if we end up playing much more zone than man.

Best of Luck,

Zone isnt that hard especially 2-3, these kids have played bball their whole life. When we have caleb in hes sooooo long that a 2-3 is fantastic.

We lose the game if he didn’t go to zone after the time out around the 2 minute mark. It was almost obvious it was needed because Caleb Wesson wasn’t going to be stopped.

Zone also protects Shaq Carter defensively as he struggles a bit playing man. D rebounding is an issue out of it and it is essential guards rebound.

One of the winning plays of the game was Mathis getting a tip to a big to get the D reb

With our length...maybe not this year...but we should eventually play some 1-2-1-1 trap and fall back into the 2-3 with a shorter shot clock to defend ....

I wasn't surprised at all. I thought we should have stayed in zone against Maryland. We did it for one possession and then dropped out of it back to man. I thought it was a mistake.

We had a stretch, while in a zone, where we were pushing OSU to the shot clock limit multiple times. Loved it. We definitely have to teach our guys to box out the nearest man when in a zone.

There were times we over extended to much in the zone but it looked better than the last time they played it.

Wonder if the SHU game taught Pike to be Flexible on this Zone thing? Seems like SHU played several types of zones and man to man (?) mixing it up.

Keep the Bastards guessing.
