Guess K tricked yet another kid into staying

Kid could have been a high second round pick this year, risky decision when you factor in that the longer you stay at Dook, the bigger nosedive your draft stock takes ( Marques Bolden, Greg Paulus, Shavlik Randolph, Amile Jefferson ) .I wish Cal would convince Herro to stay but unlike K our coach has his players' best interests at heart.

If he's not a first round pick, why would he leave? He made the right decision and I doubt anyone had to talk him into doing it.

We can hate k and Duke without resorting to reaches like this.

Also, the players you listed (Boldon, Paulus, Randolf and Jefferson) we're never going to be first round picks. They stayed because they weren't good enough to stick in the NBA at any point in their careers. UK has had some of those too.

But since when is a second round pick expected to leave?

We’ve had many second round picks, in which they should have returned to school for us but didn’t. What am I missing?

Sure have, but Cal didn't push those players out the door. He tells them where they stand and they make their own decisions. Guys like Lamb, Teague and Orton made dumb decisions, but it's on them.

Neither coach should be critisized here. This is a dumb thread.

I'm not sure what you are getting at or what you are missing. It looks like you misunderstood my post .

Herro is in no way physically ready for the NBA. That doesn't mean he wont go .
And he’ll be drafted to a team where he doesn’t need to be an impact player year one! He’ll get to practice and work on his craft 24/7

That's one possibility. Another is he'll just spend his money and be out of pro ball in a couple of years.

We know a lot of posters on here are mostly concerned about money. What we don't know is what players actually have a craft they want to improve.

He’s similar to Hagans. Neither can shoot. Jones takes care of the ball a little better and is a little better shooter IMO. Both guys are multi year college players n reality and will flop out of the league if they leave.

I hope he stays and it keeps RJ Hampton from reclassifying.

His brother has a hard time getting any clock in the league, he would not be able to stick on a roster or would play a major of the time in the G league. Might as well come back and get more experience in the college game and it likely keeps RJ Hampton away from Duke..

His brother plays 23 mpg and started 20 games this year.

Orton for one was on his last knee and knew it. He got a real good pay day. If he waited another year he would not have seen that either. The only bad he did was quitting his classes in mid-stream and walking away. That hurt Cal and UK. (That very well could have been a kids mistake.)

Players are also concerned with the money as well! Him coming back had nothing to do with him! It’s what best for the fans and team!

Yep, probably the reason we have never seen him back at Kentucky. His mom had died about his senior year of high school, don't think he was right mentally yet at the time either. Will always have respect for Orton, sticking with his commitment through coaching change, whatever else was going on at the time and playing behind two players in Patterson and Cousins who was clearly better than him.

I wish Cal would convince Herro to stay but unlike K our coach has his players' best interests at heart.

if Cal had Herro's best interest he would tell him to stay. he would be better next year.

So, let me get this straight. If Krzhfhgvhfxggcki had Jones’s best interests at heart, he’d tell him to leave but if Cal had Herro’s best interests at heart, he’d tell him to stay.

That’s a bit of a disconnect.

I know this might be a hawt take, but what if both coaches actually care about these kids and try to give them good advice?

Herro should stay another year. So should Hagans. So should Tre Jones. Really, outside of about five guys, Zion, Barrett, Morant (and he’s questionable) and a handful of others, none of these guys are really ready. You think Coby and Nas are ready? Heel no. Cam Reddish looked like trash 95% of the year. He’s not ready for the G League.

But, the NBA recruits on potential. So, yet again we’ll lose all our guys, Cal will rebuild, we’ll get to another Elite 8. The silver lining is that Duke will do the same. Meanwhile, UNCheat will continue to institutionalize guys to stay three or four years. I don’t know how Roy does it.

And not go to the final four. I called it the last two years and I will call it again next year. Duke won’t make the final four. K’s run is done. Finished.

How could he lose two last second games in back to back elite 8’s with two brand new starting 5’s!!? Gosh, Meanwhile, Cal is owning the Final 4 right now. (Wait didn’t he lose two last second elite 8 games twice in the last 3 years?-well we don’t count chapel hill because of the refs I’ve read it here so it must be true.) #scoreboard

Say the word senior to a Duke and Kentucky fan and they’d probably need a dictionary for clarification..

You can talk about Izzo’s 1-8 or Virginia’s luck and K losing in back to back E8’s but it doesn’t put Kentucky or Cal in the Final 4 since 2015. Constant threads bashing everyone else or trying to highlight everyone else’s “failures” (See multi page Izzo thread) does not put Kentucky or Calipari in the winners circle..

Once again teams full of good upperclassmen have somehow survived the meat grinder of March and are playing in April. Meanwhile, Duke and Kentucky fans are too busy studying the recruiting rankings for another recruiting banner...

Having juniors and seniors who can play is kinda still important in this sport as the Duke/Kentucky model has now peaked and gone into the dust bin...

I wish we could get fringe players to want to stay.

I think Cal is now becoming more vocal in trying to convince players to come back for another year. He’s going to need to if we’re really going to be legit contenders.

All 4 Final Four teams have numerous upperclassmen.

you mean like terrence jones, lamb, miller, the twins, WCS, ulis, poythress, pj, wenyen, briscoe, richards, green, ej and probably a few others i missed.

Did I make predictions on UK? This was a thread on Duke.

Sorry, not me.

He quit on this university before the end of the semester. Only player of the Cal era to do that. Bush league.

He also infamously walked off the bench to the locker room during a game because he was unhappy with his playing time.

Dude just wasn't a team player.

Yes his knee was messed up, but he was going to be our starting 5 in 2011, but we were forced to start Jorts. Worked out fine, of course.

Orton quit on UK plain and simple, and for that I will never respect him.

Returning is in his best interest. Returning is in Hagans’ best interest. I’m not sure returning is in Herro’s best interest.
I believe it would be, against the most elite talent is where struggled more often than not. Yeah, he would get the money but not the time and would wind up in the G league and maybe worse; he'll be playing against grown-*** men who are very physical. He needs to come back, get stronger and improve his game...much as PJ did and he could have similar results with a breakout year considering the type of talent that will be around him next year, teams won't be able focus as much on shutting him down; he's still a kid let become a man in this game.

Who’s telling Herro to go pro? Made three 3 pointers in four NCAA games?

I'm thinking mostly the people who will give him a contract followed closely by Tyler Herro.

You don't have to be admit to being wrong to also accept that you and the NBA do not evaluate the same way nor do they put anywhere near the weight on college production as you do.

They are focused on upside. They are swinging for the fences or trying to fill desperate needs in the first round. The singles and doubles are for the 2nd or free agency.

You are seemingly looking for something closer to a finished product which means to the NBA this is their ceiling and if they are at their ceiling they have oodles of guys this good and they keep looking for a home run.

To significantly raise your stock you have to force a new comp into GM's and scouts imaginations not just get better and closer to the one they already had in mind for you.

If Tyler's comp is say Rex Chapman then he likely can't get a better one just closer to living up to it which doesn't change much other than every year he doesnt achieve it is one less of runway to actually land there from their perspective.

It is called a perverse incentive but it is really there no matter how much it sucks ***.

In all likelihood, his brother has regrets. He too should have stayed. Except, it’s hard to turn down that money. Same with our guys.
I doubt he has any regrets. He has made $6M and likely has several more years in the league making higher salaries than he has so far.

Yep Tyler and Keldon can go but if they want a better chance at a long pro career they should come back and grow their games. Prove they are finishers and winners. Consistent and mature. Get the education boost. Go too early and players get tossed aside
Not happening.

Maybe. And, given his skill set, he HAD to go. He was riding the high of that championship. He was never going to go higher than he went.

We have learned to deal with Rex Chapman and his ****, i'm sure Orton will be fine in due time. It's not like his jersey will ever be retired or anything..
