Here's an interview with Eric at the OTC. I found a couple of things interesting. He says the new role is still being defined, but it will help all of Oklahoma by working with the school boy, cadet and juniors levels, and not just senior level athletes like most RTCs. The other thing is he never mentions coach Smith. He says it's been a quarter century since someone residing in Oklahoma won gold and then he mentions teammates Jamill and DC when asked about how his time at OSU helped prepare him for the new position.

A lot of RTCs (if not all) work with younger athletes to the point where there are rules as to who can work out there while still in HS (have to live within a certain distance and have certain qualifications). I'm interested to see how this will affect the Oklahoma Wrestling Academy in Edmond. Oklahoma needs that sort of effort to get going in the Tulsa area as well.

Interesting, I didn't realize that. So RTCs actually compete with local clubs to some degree? I've listened to Mark Perry and Brent Metcalf interviews after being hired and they both spoke about training the senior level guys and helping to coach the college guys. Eric is the first I've heard mention youth development. I guess that's good for Oklahoma.

They can compete with local clubs, at least in terms of elite Cadets and Juniors, it just depends on how they're setup and how much they focus on it. I forget what all the rules are, but I think you need to have been a state qualifier or something equivalent to attend so the club role is still important. Some places the rooms at the RTCs are good for stronger high school athletes while other places the numbers are low and mostly senior athletes. At those places you really only see the best kids show up to train with competition they can't get against wrestlers their own age. It remains to be seen what happens in Norman, but at least from the interview, it seems they have big plans. I'm interested to see how it plays out.
