I don't disagree that there should be more rules but what happens if a kid transfers then there's a coaching change and they don't want him or he fits the scheme?
Not sure there's a good or easy solution honestly

Who cares how anyone played in a given week? The upside of Grunk was higher than Becht in performance and eligibility. Campbell ignored it and stuck with "his guy."

Campbell didn't ignore anything. Grunk had no interest in staying. None.

If he transfers away from a school that did want him, then he’s out of luck. Maybe they should put a little more thought and effort into where they’re at before they grab the next thing.

The courts will never agree to this as you know
The only way things change are if the school pays them directly and sign them for multi years but most programs want to be able to dump a kid as well
