Gritty, Ugly Win, But A Win Is A Win...

Winning on the road is hard, even against a bad team like Nebraska, although that frosh McGowens is something special. We looked bad much of the game, but never stopped playing hard and finally made a few shots and almost all of our FTs and got some big stops when we needed them. A win is a win is a win. Win and move on.

Winning when your stars shoot 1-10 from deep and 7-27 overall means they did some other things (Geo with 6 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals and Harper didn't do that much else, but he did hit that huge trey and made 4 FTs down the stretch) and other guys stepped up, like Mag, who had his best game at RU with 13/7 and tons of hustle plays and good D. And while none of PM (10/5/2 and 4 steals, but 0-4 from deep), CO (8/9/4 blocks), or Caleb played that well, they made contributions. We also got decent minutes from the rest of the bench, although Miller can't get a T there - just dumb. Didn't love that the defensive intensity seemed a bit sporadic, but they did turn it up at times and just enough, I guess. And that call on Geo at the end was one of the worst I've ever seen - it wasn't a foul and even if it was, it was on the floor.

One thing I do wonder is how many of the Pike haters had posts drafted excoriating him and the team and ready to publish assuming we lost, who had to leave them in draft mode, lol. Sure there are plenty of things to criticize and be concerned about, but I'll never get how negative a few can be about a guy who turned this team from a laughingstock to one that's been relevant for 4 years and was an NCAA team 2 years in a row for the first time since the mid-70s and won our first tourney game since 1983. Hope he can get some scorers to help replace Ron and Geo and not have too much of a dip next year, although a dip does seem likely. Going to be extremely hard to overcome our bad losses this year to make it back to the NCAAs, but we're not out of it and I'll be there cheering the team on.

No such thing as a bad road win in the Big 10. Much needed gutsy performance by RU tonight when they couldn’t put the ball in the hoop and didn’t get a great whistle from the refs!
This. Considering your best player has one of his worst games (until crunch time) and the team as a whole shoots so poorly from three. Nebraska has played a lot of teams tough at home.

Some incredibly bad basketball for most of the night but a great sign to see us pull one out on the road.

As I was saying in the main discussion thread after Maryland., we needed to do 2 things. 1) Hold teams to 7 or less 3 point makes 2) Get another player Hyatt , Jones or Mag to start or at least give us 10 more points a game to take the pressure off of Geo and Ron to get us to 70 points scored.

Nebraska hit 6 threes out of 20 to our 3 but not 9 or more that would have made the deficient too large to come back from We we’re still close enough (6-8) to make the comeback. . This game where so much went wrong with our offense it was crucial to the win that we did not let them go off from the 3 point line. This has now been a winning formula against Clemson, Purdue , Michigan , Iowa , Maryland (1), both Nebraska wins , so 7 of our 12 wins. Only Seton hall and Penn State where we gave up 5 and 6 did we lose but we played terribly throughout but was only down 6-8 with 6-7 minutes left to give us a chance that never happened.

Pike did not start Hyatt or Jones or Mag but played them more and cut into Caleb’s minutes to allow Mag to give 13 crucial points . Paul and Caleb were giving us 12 or less in 4 of the recent losses and we needed more ( Paul with 10 and Caleb 4 for 14 , still not enough ) but Caleb only played 16 minutes instead of 30-35 and Mag got us 13 points in 20 minutes. This is what we were discussing before the game that we needed another bench player to give up 10 more points to get us to 70 points a game , where our chance of winning goes way up. . Even in a game where we only scored 63 , and our offense was horrendous almost all night , not fluid , no crisp passes and ball movement , getting that extra out of Mag was crucial for the win.
Pike has to seriously consider starting one of Hyatt, Jones or Mag and giving them 5-6 minutes to start each half and if they do well , they get more. Cannot emphasize how crucial Mag’s 13 points in 20 minutes , not to mention his other contributions on the court .

Winning on the road is not easy. It’s hard to believe this is the same team that scored 93 a couple of weeks ago. The difference was Ron was taken out of the game and McGowens had 18 (!) FT attempts. The refs had too much of an impact on the game.

It sure beats losing, but this kind of game really exposes the fact that we play way too much isolation for a team that lacks guys who can create off the dribble.
