I debated posting this because I'm sure it will turn into the same guys fighting. However, when Schiano went to OSU it was painted as yet another worst case scenario. Months later has anyone heard his name? I watched most of the OSU spring game and I don't remember him being mentioned or interviewed. Also, it's my understanding he won't be recruiting on the road and has had zero contact with any NJ coaches thus far.

Wouldn't be surprised if Schiano's main purpose is to watch the big picture and learn from Meyer per his arrangement with Meyer.
Schiano ain't dictating terms of this arrangement . It's meyer's way or the highway
Urban doesn't care if anyone out there is recruited by ash. If it comes down to RU vs Ohio state for a Midwest kid, it sure as hell isn't gonna be Rutgers.
Someone with tighter ties to the high school coaching cabal is going to have to speak to this, but I got the distinct impression that high school coaches may have been impressed by Schiano's engineered turnaround of Rutgers's seemingly chronic football mediocrity -- to whatever extent you want to say that occurred -- but that he doesn't exactly bring the love with those guys.

any 11th hour offer will get a midwest kid flipped in a heartbeat..dont fool yourself. jersey is our bread and butter. dont expect miracles in the midwest.
Oh I agree, it's just that all over the country there are recruits looking for the chance to go live in a different place. We gotta grab some of them because nj can lead our roster, but it won't provide us with a very deep squad.
I feel I can convince recruits from all over the country to come out and play at Rutgers - seriously.
The thing Schiano was best at was coaching defense. I expect the OSU defense will not miss a beat.
We don't have a ton of national prospects this year and OSU has a ton of commits already.
Beat me to it. There is no way that Meyer would be staying away from recruiting New Jersey because of Ash. Just no way. Ohio State's doing fine so far with 13 commitments averaging 3.92 stars. They haven't needed to look this way for recruits yet. And Ash has probably been too busy trying to get established in New Jersey to be looking at recruiting in Ohio.
I agree. Last year was actually unusual in that we had several nationally top 10 ranked in their positions. Most years New Jersey might have one recruit that is in the top 10 in their position. I did see Schiano get credit for recruiting a 5 star recruit to Ohio State.
I bet Meyer wants Rutgers to succeed but Rutgers success wouldn't mean beating Ohio State or Michigan within the next 10 years. It would mean raising our play up to 3-5 in the Big Ten East. In a couple of years Meyer will be gone and Rutgers success is important to the Big Ten and would really get NYC excited.
Yes, Meyer is the architect of that program. It's not like Ash overruled him on the style of tackling they would implement.

Well, he is just an assistant coach. I find it very odd he isn't recruiting on the road but then again, him and Luke Fikell are co D coordinators and maybe Schiano told him he doesn't want to recruit. It's an odd play because now that he's a college D cord he will have to take a college HC job next or somehow make the jump to NFL position coach. I still it's a HR hire for Urban as he's a tremendous defensive coach
Urban sniffed around very late on Ronnie but again..Ronnie was a nj kid. My post directly references Midwest kids. NJ kids may not want to leave home which is why we even have a chance... though many will If it means going to Ohio state vs Rutgers. Plus, I really doubt urban put the full press on Ronnie James.
If you believe that I have a bridge I would like to sell you. Meyer would take a recruit from his own mother if he felt the kid could help. He is certainly not making deals with former coaches. Do you think he not going to recruit Missippi, Utah, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, Nevada and West Virginia because all those states have former assistants that are head coaches?
You folks really over think this. Meyer doesn't give a crap about Rutgers succeeding or not. He may certainly wish Ash well but don't think for a minute that if he needs Micah Clark in October/ November he's not coming after him hard. It's too early in the process--he's going after his top priorities right now and after he's done with that if there is a player in NJ or anywhere else that will fill his roster needs he'll go after him. That is a part of why he's so successful.
Greg Schiano was in Cali yesterday recruiting two 5-star teammates (WR) Darney Holmes and (DB) Brendan Radley-Hiles. I'm not sure if he has been recruiting NJ as that has been Ed Warinner's recruiting territory. I think Schiano has been given more of a national recruiting role and not so much a designated territory. I know he has been in contact with kids from several states for both the 2017 and 2018 class.
It doesn't seem like we are targeting NJ very much for the 2017 class. Our 2017 class will be smaller than previous classes and already has 13 commits. It has been speculated our 2017 class will sign between 19-21 unless some attrition happens.

Or you want a better chance at playing early, or you have ties to NJ, or you really like Ash's message... Point is, it can happen for various reasons.
If you're a fringe recruit and the plan b for osu with another school showing you a lot of love it's one thing, but if Ohio state puts the full court press on a kid we want, our only chance is basically if the kid really wants to stay home...cause full court press means the recruit is being told he will play early.

Appreciate the info., OSU2015, and it actually doesn't really surprise me that GS hasn't been in Jersey all that much. As was mentioned earlier, when Greg was here, I think the NJ HS coaches appreciated the job he was doing at Rutgers. On the other hand, though, now that he's moved on, I don't know that you can necessarily take it as a given that Jersey HS coaches automatically get the warm and fuzzies whenever Greg crosses their minds.
Also, I think we all hope the last statement in your post becomes reality. -And personally, I absolutely love what I've seen from CA and his staff so far, and feel they have the potential, (again, I stress...potential), to bring Rutgers football to a level of performance and competition it's never consistently experienced before.

vk &160 you seemed to miss osu spring game announcer's state that Schiano and Fikell are both the "Defensive coordinators", NOT CO-Defensive coordinators, and then he goes on to explain this unique status of having 2 Defensive coordinators and not CO-Coordinators
BTW Schiano sucked at recruiting Jersey so why put him in a place he was such a failure at.

Rutgers succeeding means beating Penn State, Maryland and MSU. We will not be competitive with Ohio State at any time Meyer is with them since it would take ar least 10 years to get to that stage. I don't know how Meyer would want Ash to success without Rutgers succeeding.
I think he'll be there longer than 1 year. Doesn't UM also ask for his assistants to stay on a certain amount of time, 2 years I believe?
I do think a couple year stint under UM will rejuvenate his prospects though and while I was strongly against him this go around I think there's a good chance he'll be a much improved coach after working with UM for a couple years.
I read somewhere that Meyer didn't ask Schiano to make the same 2 year assistant commitment he normally does. Don't recall where. Might have been on an OSU media source.
