I didn’t agree with the go for 2 at the time and just in general that early usually but I think the 3 possessions in the first half is what skewed his thinking, like how many other chances will we get down here in the second half after what he saw in the first.
Wasn’t a fan but understand the thinking. My biggest issue is the awful play design we roll out in that situation. It’s like we only have one short yardage/2 point conversion option in the playbook.

If he was truly using analytics and not using human intervention to skew his decision, data only, he would have gone for it on 4th and 1 near midfield. Especially given the fact that limited possessions were going to be an issue and you ran the ball on 3rd and 8 the play earlier. They treated it like it was a 4 play drive than went away from the analytics.

So, we're finally an old West division team? I get it, we're not a good team, but we don't have to make sh*t up to make it look bad. There's plenty to pick apart for that. A lot of people are getting their wish, the team is going to tank. Those people are the ones sitting at home watching on TV.

I have a vested interest in this and am pretty pissed off. I had no illusions we'd win this game as I predicted a UCLA win, I just didn't expect a complete meltdown once again by the D. If you know football, scheme wise what we're doing on D is mind boggling. We need to drop the gap control and zone, the kids just aren't getting or able to do it.
I'm not as savvy on X's and O's as you and others here, but I sit next to a guy who is, and I listen to the live broadcast--Eric L and Mike Teel try to be diplomatic, but they point out a lot of flaws. In the 5th quarter show, JPO (linebacker from Ash error) went off--he was pissed.

As vanilla as the offense was yesterday, it was the only pleasant surprise of the day that they put up 32 points. Take away that crappy pick Athan threw, and maybe, just maybe Rutgers would have pulled it out despite the sucky defense. Strange that the crappy part of the team stepped up and the supposed strength of the team has collapsed. And we shall not discuss special teams, although yesterday was pretty good.

Everyone pumped up Michigan last year and how we needed to mimic their offense.

Despite a super low number of play and possessions per game, I believe they were near the top in yards per play.

As you say, it’s fine if you want that type of offense. You just need to be near the best every play at it.

But then that begs the “do we have (or will ever have) Michigan level talent to do that”?
The Michigan team that lost to Washington, the team Rutgers beat like a drum? 😉 By the transitive theory, that means Rutgers is better than Michigan--either our coaches/coaching or players/talent/playing. Doesn't it? Please tell me yes. Mrs. Shift removed all the sharp objects and shoelaces from our house after yesterday. I don't know why. . . . . . . 😜

Weakest of weak sauce. You can’t just sit here and bash GS all day long (even though it’s currently warranted). You have to face the reality. Who can we get?

To clarify: I’m not a GS bootlicker. Man up Shelby.
There’s no one TO get since we’re saddled with the worst contract in history besides Jimbo’s.

I don't remember beating Washington like a drum. When was this?

I remember escaping a good Washington team that moved the ball well on us but had some fatal penalties and unforced errors.

That’s true, they mostly outplayed us but kept shooting themselves in the foot with their lack of discipline. Still, it was a good, disciplined win for us. Not a beating though.

If the offense from yesterday was called and executed the same vs Nebraska we'd be 5-2 and still whining it is not good enough... because we should have beaten UCLA. So we have the O failing us, and themselves, and losing.. the D failing us, and themselves, and losing.

I do think the D issues are injury-caused and related to depth/experience. i'd like to think both side could become more consistent. But it is a hope, more than a belief.

JPO wasn't an Ash guy - he was part of Schiano 1.0's last class - the Darius Hamilton/Leonte Caroo group - that Flood kept together. Still probably the best ranked group we've ever pulled in.

And under contract until 2030. That's $30-36M.
The earliest I see them getting rid of him is after the 2026 season if things really take a turn for the worst. More likely he survives to the end of the contract as long as he can produce 5-7 win seasons over the next few years, hell, he might even get another 2- or 3-year extension at some point.

Here I agree with you. Either Schiano does it or he doesn't. He is with us for at least 3 more years. I hope he does.

What baffled me was the timeout called with 1 minute to go at the end of the first half. I think UCLA was going to let time run out and end the half -- they weren't playing any type of hurry up game. We gave them that TD and it ended up being the difference.

Stopped short of saying he's taking receipts aka Saleh, take your shot, very similar.

Another thing that stands out in this press conference is Schiano somewhat complaining, or making the excuse, about only having 3 possessions in the first half. That it was an NFL style game. Well that is what he wants. He wants to minimize possessions and eat clock. You can’t complain when someone else uses your game plan and does it better. If you are trying to minimize possessions you better have an efficient offense that knows how to score. Especially in the red zone where your team has been abysmal.
You missed the point completely. He wasn’t complaining or using an excuse. Simply stating the low possessions in first half influenced his decision making process .

Yeah so a loss to #2, potentially #1 Oregon is going to knock them out. Buy a clue. They then have two winnable games in Minnesota and Michigan St. again buy a clue because at potentially 8-2 they’ll be ranked.
As I told you they would lose to Minnesota. It’s ok we both know they are not ranked. Bought a clue two weeks ago was hoping you would

No I didn’t miss the point. Schiano style of play is to eat clock and limit the other teams possessions (he’s spoken about this multiple times not a secret). The script was flipped and UCLA used his tactic against him and limited his possessions. They knew his offense has an issue scoring. Schianos decision to employ that style of offense was made far in advance. Therefore lack of possession was and is exactly that an excuse.
