He is the chairman of the BOG, and he is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) donors to football. He is a HUGE Schiano fan. We need to E-Mail him and let him know our frustrations/extreme displeasure of Flood & Co. ruining our program.

I would be more inclined to agree except if we are gonna pay 2.5 or more I would want someone other than schiano

so many people like to say that... so name 5 that we could target. 5 that at 2-3m. and don't say tressel because he's not coming. don't say rhule because he's PSU all the way. don't say mario because he failed in his only coaching job. don't say hermann because he ain't leaving after a year. fleck? ha.

RHULE will come for a pay increase and play in the Big Ten. No one will wait 3-4 years for the possibility of Penn State to fire Franklin. If he does, he's an idiot.

Give him a salary of $2 million and incentives for another $1-2 million base on 6-10 wins for the season. 7-9 wins would keep the stadium pack to 50k. 10K less fans in the stadium amounts to about $5 million in lost revenue.

Bo Pelini in a heartbeat over GS - I don't think people realize how good is record was. He's totally combustable though but I'd gladly take him
Rhule would come here next year.
Hermann would come we just aren't gonna pay up for his buyout

Never in 1 million years would I hire Fleck to do anything let along coach RU football.
Agreed - Mario - a disaster

I don't believe schiano is a panacea. Schiano frustrated us with games like yesterday too.

We need Rhule or someone who can actually out coach people on both sides of the ball to win games.

Schiano is not the coach of the future for Rutgers on the field or in the locker room, and will not unite nj or the fan base either.

Not sold on Rhule. Just seems like the latest flavor of the month like we've seen here before with Golden, Edsall, Turner Gill, etc... I didn't care for any of those guys either and they even had a longer track record than Rhule does. We don't even know how the rest of the season plays out yet.

Herman I've liked since 2 years ago when everyone here was on Narduzzi and last year everyone seemed to jump on board with him but his buyout is 2.25M before 2018 so only the top programs will likely pay that.

Pelini is good and I've said I think Nebraska is putting a square peg in round hole with Riley and at best I think he'll match Pelini and likely will do worse. Pelini is a powder keg though and do you want that with the media here? That's up for debate.

Fleck I have no interest in.

As to salary I've said this before 2-2.5M is more than enough even a little less will likely be more than enough for a HC in most circumstances. Do you think the guys who are making 3-5M now were making those salaries on their first contracts at a P5 school? Nope they usually were redone after some slight show of success, something I'm also not a big fan of, but point is their first contracts were in that 1.5-2.5 range in most instances.

Mark Helfrich makes 2M and he was in the champ game last year and Oregon is Nike money bags school. Think about that . Scott Frost their hot OC made 370K and recently got bumped up to 400K. Tom Herman made 400-500K as OSU's OC. Ed Warrniner made about 350K as the OL/co-OC last year and was bumped up to 600K . Outside of the SEC and a few select schools I think the salaries we could afford are enough to find good people. We paid Fridge 500K and were offering Smith 500K but Arkansas matched and he went there, they have since raised his salary.

As for names, I'm not as hot on this year's crop of coaches. I'd like to see more.

Scott Frost is one I'd come around on if I could see how he finishes this year without Mariota. Ideally I'd like to see it next year too with the Eastern Washington kid gone. Change faces and keep on rolling then I feel more confident. Played for the Jets for a few years. It doesn't mean much but in the sense for those worried about geography he wouldn't be a complete fish out of water with regards to the general tenor of this area. Maybe Chip Kelly could pay him a visit or two in the off season too just to give thoughts. Even a 1.5M contract would be tripling to quadrupling his current salary.

Justin Fuente at Memphis is another name but again want to see if he can recreate his performance from last year. He was the co-OC under Patterson at TCU for those couple years they went to BCS bowl games having beat Wisconsin in one of them and he's done a nice job building up Memphis but I'd like to see more.

Good post. I'd take Pelini in a heartbeat. This team and program clearly needs the kind of fire he brings.

If Schiano is deciding between Miami and RU and picks Miami, he's nuts. They won't allow him to win 7-8 games indefinitely like we would.

I'm not advocating for or against him, but he could come back here and live out his Joe Pa fantasy of coaching somewhere for 30 years.

He wants to live that out at Penn State. He even said so.

Schiano left us. Understandable decision for him and his family.
But he also took many of our other coaches and behind the scene
resources which had to play a part in the decommitts.
That is still hurting us a few years later.
No way I want him back

If you don't mind the heated emotions Brent Venables is a name on the defensive side of the ball I brought up last year. The emotional part cooled me on him a little because our media but I think he could be good. Got pushed out of OU for Bob Stoops brother and I think their defense slipped a little after but during his time at Clemson their D has gone up each year culminating in top 5 finish the last 1-2 years I believe. I'd assume he'd use a spread too like they did at OU and now Clemson so that's a plus to me because I think that's they way to go on offense.

What about Ohio State's Luke Fickel?
Did a little research on him in the past but not too much. I don't remember them being so great on D when I looked them up but I could be misremembering. What were OSU's defensive rankings (scoring/total) the years he's been DC? Honestly, not too enthused about anyone on their staff after Herman left. They all have more to prove IMO.

OSU fans hate Fickel.

edit.

Pelini would last one day here, NJ/NY media would destroy him.

Obviously Jim tressel if he wanted it. Schiano or pellini I would take too, in that order .
Wild card butch Davis . But this is Rutgers and we don't want a winner that is controversial . We just put up with losers that are controversial.

Firing a coach is easier than finding one that would come to Rutgers with all the constraints ,ie,financial, media, fickle fan base and disconnect with top NJ recruits.

I know GB pretty well. I spoke with him last week and he was just telling me that he has some big plans but he's got them on hold until a dozen or so commoners email him demanding he write the check.

2.5 million for GS? No no no! Let's move on already! If Rutgers spends that kind of money it better 1.7 million for Scott Frost as HC and 800k for Randy Shannon as DC/recruiter.

It's no more constrained than some other places where coaches go. B10 job in a fertile recruiting ground is going to be wanted by some, maybe not all, but surely some qualified candidates. Did you see that article about Tom Herman I posted in 2 threads. Good insight into the guy but anyway he literally went to Home Depot, bought some scrapers and was peeling up the floors in one of Houston's facilities that were warping or something. P5 jobs are coveted, a P5 job in a fertile recruiting territory is going to have some good candidates.

Our finances suck but what I'd expect us to pay is just about what most places pay in first contracts to coaches in the P5 outside of the SEC and a few select schools. So it's not like we're as severely handicapped as some may think.

Fickle fan base, no more or less than others. Frankly, I think we're much more patient than most. Was just perusing one of the Oregon Duck boards this morning and they were killing the defense and their coordinator about how they've been playing specifically against Georgia State. I think some here are too insular and don't really look around and see what goes on in other places whether it's with regard to fan reaction, coaching salaries, coaching situations, etc..

The main thing to me is never about money, it's more about proper identification of that next coach. Today's big coaches were the no names of yesterday. It's up to the AD to find that name.

Bo Pelini is coaching a FCS team now, so we could afford him, but he would have to be like Bill Belichick and barely talk to the media if he wanted to come here and keep his sanity and our sanity.
