That whole season was the beginning of the end. But what made that play worse, was his post game comments. I expected him to come up talking about how it was his fault, he made the call but really should have allowed the kick giving the context. Not get on his knees begging for forgiveness but maybe a little bit apologetic. Instead he was just nope, you make the call, that's it, not going to second guess it then went into some bizzare coach speak to defend it.

At that point we should all have been like, hmm..., maybe Schiano has lost it and is no longer up to the challenge. Look, as someone getting older, get it, things change, time marches on and it impacts you. Clearly it has impacted Schiano.

That was Schiano's "This chicanery" moment from Chuck in Better Call Saul where any sane fan knew he lost his ability to rationally coach. I firmly believe if Zinn/Tate were in power at the time that Schiano would've been handed his retirement package the next day and we would've played Sparty in the snow and the bowl game in Phoenix vs K-State with Joe H as interim.

Think this might be referring to a play from the 2003 game, which was significantly more competitive - they hit us for an 83-yard TD right at the end of the 1st half when it was still a one-score game. According to Rutgers' own recap, "West Virginia appeared to catch Rutgers off guard." That 2003 season was a big improvement overall, but an inexcusable breakdown prevented a chance at it being a bigger step up. Not a bad microcosm of the whole GS experience.

Caveman football. Plain and simple. That works in the 1980s, not in 2026 where coaches need to actually be cerebral and strategic to win games.

Was the true beginning of the end. If you were a player in the locker room, it was then you knew for certain, your head coach is a moron who will actively lose games for you. His defense of it was just pathetic. “I’ve done it both ways in the past”. As if that made it ok calling TO to ice the kicker only after they got a free attempt to see how woefully short it was and immediately run out the offense. He grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory that day. Really was the end of 2.0.

He started winning in year five when Ray fell into his lap and the ACC started picking off teams. His last season looks good at 9-4 but the best team we played was No 24 WVU. He was good motivator and improved the program but has never been a top tier coach, and he is way out of his league in the B10.

I didn't like the Smith hire, especially after the endless search that led up to it, but I figured he would at least be okay. He was DC for a year under Elko at Duke and that team was pretty good. Of course, Duke didn't keep him around after that season, which wasn't a great sign. Looking back, Joe H. and Corey Hetherman leaving was really the beginning of the end for GS 2.0.

Talent evaluation matters the most, which GS has historically been terrible at with QBs. Facts are AK came running to KC because he got passed over at Minnesota. It worked out for Rutgers and Athan. Win-win.

Watching Syracuse and Pitt. Fran Brown has had two great QBs in only 3 seasons. Kyle McCord and now Steve Angeli.

On the other hand, Fran's kicker is 3/5 on the season.

Edit: Angeli throws his second interception of night, 5 in two games now. Fran Brown does not look happy.

Thanks, brother. Shelby takes it further. Grifting Gary is uniquely bad at coaching for being a coach. Unusually doesn’t cover it. He’s reached the zenith of bad. There’s only one mug on the Mt Rushmore of current bad coaches. His. The differences between The Wyckoff Weasel and Chris Ash are that Ash didn’t have all the best teams leave the conference enabling him to finish third, once, and also that Ash is thought highly of and got other key jobs after. Schiano is unhirable and even less likable.

Greg should never have been allowed to come back after last season.

Having said that, I remain stunned a the level of incompetence this team, thanks to the head man, has shown. He seems to be so out of touch with reality that there is no way he makes it beyond the Indiana game (which will be something I don’t want to see as the good Rutgers university name will be spit on, pissed on, and torched on at a level we have never witnessed before - everyone should stay off their TVs and social media for at least a week).

The moderate in me has to step in here.

Let’s please, tell it like it is. We had in fact “come a long way” at that time to even be in the position to beat a fringe ranked team with time expiring. The program was a complete dumpster fire leading up to the 2.0 era. You can’t compare what we were the 3 seasons prior to what we were under 2.0 at any point… UNTIL this season. That’s not to say, what we were was “good enough” progress - but that’s a different conversation entirely. One that no longer matters.

The bottomline is we’ve now come full circle back to Ashland. An argument could be made that 2026-27 is trending towards a rock bottom landing that could even surpass our darkest years under Ash. That’s TBD as it’s still unclear just how bad UMass is going to be this year. BC too.

The point is - Greg had, at best elevated us from historically bad to mediocre. I don’t care who you are - you don’t build up enough good will from that to survive the historically bad year we’re destined for after only 2 games.
