AD can say whatever he likes it is still Issel, the question was greatest player at UK.Issel was here for 3 varsity seasons if Davis had been here that long it might have been different but he wasn't,besides I think he only took the 4th most shots on the team, that is what I heard once.

Ok. Well regardless it’s a lot closer than “no contest”

Anthony Davis, while only a Freshman, accomplished the following at UK:
  • Consensus first team all-American
  • Consensus National Player of the Year
  • National Defensive Player of the Year
  • Final Four Most Outstanding Player
  • National Champion
And this is also after only playing the center position for a year or so due to his late growth spurt.

I have never seen a college player who could singlehandedly change the entire complexion of a game like Davis could. In my mind, Davis has to be the greatest player to ever wear a UK jersey.

And that’s not a slight to Issel in the least. Davis was simply that good.

This thread is interesting but as a side light is a barometer of RR's responder age and experience. Carry on.

Depends on what your definition of "greatest" is. Greatest as in impact to the program, who scored the most points, greatest player in terms of overall ability, won the most titles, etc.

He would / but at a 3 to 1 clip. If I'm building a team smack dab in the middle of Issel years and AD years, I'm taking AD, you take Issel. I'll win more games if the surrounding cast is equal. That's it. Game over.
Like playing cards with my brother's kids! Both were great in their era. Played on the same team. Quit horsing around.

No championships though
makes no difference. Far and away the best player ever at uk. And I loved Mash and Kenny Walker and AD, but Davis only played one year, so to me that doesn't qualify..Everyone that says he is the best is going on what he has done in the pros..Issel is the man

Ralph Beard. He was 3 time first team all American. Played on back-to-back championship teams in 48 and 49. Won gold in 48 Olympics. Scored over 1500 points in his U.K. Career.

I'll wait to see the name of a player with a better resume than that.
Some of the ones on this board that have been following since 1989 will put up all kinds of resistance to this post..Ralph was a great one..They will tell you it's AD hands down.

Pretty sure a lot of you are dismissing what a junior or senior Davis would have in college ball.
But he was only here one year and there is no changing that. Greatest player at UK, not greatest player that went to nba after one year and became great. that is what thread said. Issel had a fabulous pro career.

You just contradicted yourself. It wasn't the "best UK career", it was "best UK player". And by the way, AD is already a five time NBA all-star if you wanna go that route.

I wouldn’t say “hands down” but I mean... it’s Davis.

Just because Ralph has a better “resume” from 75 years ago doesn’t mean he’s “no questions asked a better player” as some have said on this thread.

Davis’s impact on not only UK, but college basketball in general is unparalleled. Seeing what he’s become now (and not even in his prime yet) it further solidifies the consensus that he was the GOAT at UK.

It’s really hard to do the “best” thing because of different eras. Rule changes, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, coaching, all that has an impact on any given player.

How is RB's resume better than AD or DI? I think by anyone's standards they're the only top three, but AD and DI or 1A and 1B depending on yoir choice. Ralph is the obvious 2, but I just can't put him against the other two.

This thread will thin out the "old" (ME) UK fans from the "Youngster" UK fans. Regardless, all players that put on the UK uniform are awesome!
Good point CatinIL, Dan Issel gets my vote by a fraction over AD. But, I loved watching them both! AD had other future NBA players running the court w/him.

Why does 1 year disqualify anyone? He broke a bunch of records and swept awards
