Lost in our hand wringing over Skal, Newman has been a huge, huge disappointment under Howland. From 10 ten to probably mid second round now.

makes you wonder - and I've said this about other players who went elsewhere and seemed to have busted - how would he have done under Cal?

Its no so much Cal. Its the fact he would've been set up by Ulis, instead of being asked to be the lead ballhandler for MISS ST., which he clearly cant handle.

More open shots + less of a load on his shoulders + better teammates = better, efficient numbers.

good point (s)
He's good, but not good enough to carry the team.

Newman has only been in double figures in 1 of their last 9 games. 13-16. Personally, I'm so glad he did. We don't get Murray otherwise.

We really dodged a bullet. Can't imagine having Skal and Malik on the same team this year.

you can bet your *** Cal would've coached him better and provided more success than Howland has. I won't believe otherwise. Don't think he'd be an All-American candidate like Murray is, but he'd probably be in the discussion for one of the All-SEC teams.
This.

Whenever there's a highly rated prospect we see people saying well it doesn't matter where Player X goes to school because he's going to succeed anywhere.

I don't think that's true.

There's been alot of Cal misses that have gone elsewhere only to be busts. Cal on the other hand, the ones he does get, aren't bust. Maybe just Skal but I'm not ready to say that just yet

Unfortunate for him. I don't hope for him or any other player who doesn't choose us to do poorly but at the same time I couldn't care less about their successes either.

Cal will get his one way or another. I'm just glad we got the better Malik to spurn his in-state school.

But I'm sure daddy and Malik are happy that he is getting the ball in his hands all the time....:cool2:

Wonder what Horatio Webster thinks now, hmm, I should have sent him to Kentucky.

Murray is a much, much better player than Newman, and it isn't just 1 thing. Murray is taller, more skilled, smarter, more aggressive, and more mature.

Missing on Newman was a blessing in disguise. Murray is better 8 days a week. Missing on Zimmerman was a bigger loss than we realized though.

I was one of the few who did not want Newman. I saw him as another Mohammad (that went to UCLA or USC). A volume scorer, not a shooter, who was only out there to "get his" (points).

Yes but Cal is the one that breaks kids of such mentalities as that like no other.

To be fair...while I agree Ullis helps Murray by having a great PG to get you the ball...but outside of Ullis, I don't think UK has much better players in Briscoe/Willis/Poy/Lee/Skal...than most other teams have.

Miss St has a solid PG and a really good SF in Sword. They have bigs that are just as athletic as ours. So Newman isn't exactly playing on a total scrub team yet they won't make the NCAA, his numbers aren't so great for a top 5 kid in his very weak class...and he's not in the draft boards looking to good right now. Huge mistake by not getting in UK bus when he was our first choice recruit in the backcourt.

This class with Newman,Simmons, Zimmerman and a few others is a great recruiting tool going forward

Cal doesn't even have to mention it. The have been numerous writers and analyst already talking about it. They want to go somewhere they can be the man instead of going to a top notch school and work hard

Just like when cal is asked about kids asking about the NBAand getting drafted. he said he doesn't have to say anything. It's the elephant in the room. Proof speaks for itself. Now
he has another thing to hang his hat on

I never saw what so many others saw in Newman's game while we were recruiting the kid. He obviously has some talent, but i didn't see the top lotto pick type of talent everybody had him pegged as. I saw a kid with quickness that liked to shoot a lot but didn't hit his shots at a high %. While we were recruiting Newman, i wanted Murray and thought Murray would be the better player. I'm glad Newman decided to screw up our plans and went elsewhere. Some might think Cal would get more out of Newman, which is probably part true, but Cal ain't a wizard. He wouldn't have got a better player out of Newman than Murray currently is. Newman's game wouldn't look as bad with a point guard like Ulis dishing him the ball, but with Newman, he has to have the ball in his hands to produce. With Ulis on the roster, we all know that wouldn't happen and if it did, we wouldn't be half as good as we are this season. With Newman's mindset of wanting to be the man, he could have been the type of cancer that would have ruined our entire season and we would be talking about NIT type of season. Sometimes when Cal loses, he wins. I don't know how that happens, but it seems to happen a lot.

I remember Zaytovens love affair with him, calling him the best guard coming out of high school in however long and that missing on him would doom us. He literally lost his **** over him.

Like a few others have said, I also was not impressed with him. He was bigger than everyone at 15 and that's where the hype came from. He has to shoot way to much to be effective.

Murray is a far better player. We lucked out on a miss for the 2nd year in a row.

Even back then I felt Murray was the better player, but I have to admit I had no idea he'd be THIS much better.
