My non conference grade is a B.
Positives
Beat UNC
No bad losses
Won 3 against P5 opponents
Beat top five mid major in Valpo
No bad losses
Solid 10-2 record

Negatives
Loss at home
Loss to Louisville

Pre SEC projected seed: 2

A bunch more positives than negatives. This season is on track to be something special and I believe it will happen.

I pretty much agree...dropping them to B minus for losing at home.

I would agree with your grade of B or even go with B- because of the loss against UCLA. You say no bad losses but the UCLA one might qualify just because it was at Rupp and we really got beat pretty badly despite the closer score at the end of the game. Also, giving up that many points and then again to UNC isn't a good sign either. I remain optimistic on a great finish to the season in March/April but that is contingent on the coaches correcting the problems we currently have. I believe they can and that we have a ton of talent but we will all be on a wait and see the next couple of months. Depending on how we do in the KU game the grade above could go up or down and so could our seed. I see us as a 2 but could see us as a 3 if some things don't improve and we lose a few more games we weren't anticipating. Good thread topic.

I personally didn't count UCLA as a bad loss because of their ranking both in the polls and RPI. However losing to anyone at home is definitely a negative for a program of UK's caliber. KU losing their starting center helps our chances but they still have very good guards. January and February will be telling but I expect improvement.

Yeah, I would go along, pretty much, with everything you said there. I know what you mean by UCLA's ranking but we were #1 at the time and it was on our court so that's why I "kinda" suggested it as maybe a bad loss. I know it's not like losing to UT or Vandy or something similar but still . . .

True, but at least nobody in the SEC will come within ten of UK in Rupp, expect maybe Florida. I think UK will blow out South Carolina. However as for the road games I'm sure we will take a couple losses and win a couple close ones.

The offense gets an A, the defense gets a C-. We have the ability to be a good defensive team only time will tell. I do think we will hAve trouble with versatile 6'6"-6"8" type players all year unless Gabriel figures it out

We're probably a solid 3 seed if we roll the sec and beat ku. any loss in our conference is going to be a bad one.
If we take care of business and some of the teams ranked ahead of us stumble then i could see us as a 2 seed.

Compared to our potential? C for both offense and defense.

Seed in the tournament? Eh, likely a 2 or 3. Maybe a one if we sweep the SEC, beat Kansas and get into the conference finals.

He's just guessing. He has no logical reasons. He probably thinks we will lose 5-6 in the SEC or something. I seriously doubt tht. The road schedule is very manageable.

My concern is the utter lack of defense on this team and very close wins against teams because one guy goes for 50 once. He's just as likely to pull a Louisville.

The team has potential, but if they stay flat like this, it's a 5 to 7 seed team

The defense hasn't been too bad against most of the teams on the schedule. Remember that since UK plays at such a fast pace the possession count increases for both teams. If we slow it down then the points decrease for both teams. Our defensive efficiency is pretty good according to kenpom.

Last year UK had a weaker team, bad losses in non conference play, bad SEC losses, and a tougher road schedule. This year we have a better team, no bad non conference losses, more quality wins, and an easier January and February schedule. Last year UK had a four seed, so it's unlikely UK gets a worse seed this year.

Dude no way in hell are we a 5 seed. None . 3 seed would be the worst and we would have to lose a decent amount of SEC games. anyways to respond to the OP

My grade is a B+ . we lost to the best team in the country in UCLA and a top 10 UL team ( though I think they lose a 5-7 games in the ACC as the O is too streaky) and there ain't any harm in 4 starting freshmen losing those kinda of games . WE have 1 weakness - inexperience . Once we get that this will be Cal's best team come March. I think we go 17-1 in SEC ( one slip up at either A&M , UT , UF ) but 18-0 ain't out of the realm of possibility. We will be a 1 seed ( we are the first 2 seed right now) . I am loving the doubt on this board right now ( just like I did in 2011 and 2014 before final 4 runs) as when we become the juggernaut we are becoming it will make it that much sweeter.

Losing to UCLA who is a F4 caliber team. Very talented and experienced. I wouldn't call that a bad loss.

Expect no worse than a #2 seed. After we beat KU, I'd give UK an 84 on its OOC test.

Exactly. This UCLA finished the pre-conference undefeated. The last two UCLA teams that did that both went to a FF, and one won a NC.

Viewed in isolation, I think people overreacted to the Louisville loss re seed. If we make waste of the SEC like everyone thinks, so we end up, I don't know, 30-4 on selection Sunday with wins over UNC and Kansas and two top 10 quality losses....we're going to be ranked in the top 5 and would get a 1 seed.

But I don't think we're going to make waste of the SEC. I believe this team by March will be hell on wheels, and no one will want them. But it's going to take a while for this team to figure it out. Not as many losses as '11 or '14, but still, a few SEC losses.

IOW, we don't get a 1 or even a 2. But not because of uofl.......

They have to go 16-2 in conference and beat Kansas to get a 2 seed any SEC loss will hurt them

The UCLA loss at home and the UL loss on the road were both tough to swallow but both are good and have way more experience than us. I see some flaws but this team can be really good. No chance in hell they slip to a 5-7 seed. I totally disagree with that comment.

I would grade them at a -B thus far. There are some really good things about this team, but there are a couple of flaws right now too. I think we will enter the tournament with 6 losses and a 3 seed.

Grades I've assigned below are against Top 25 calibre teams, not Popcorn States that dominate the OOC schedule and a weak SEC:

Offense in transition -- A
Offense in half-court -- C-

Defense in transition -- C
Defense in half-court -- C-

Offense in transition is already very good, so not much room for improvement. Don't see the half-court offense improving much with Camp Cal or the SEC slate:
  • Bam should improve.
  • Briscoe and Fox are not likely to improve their outside shooting much, if at all.
  • Monk is streaky. He can shoot you into or out of a game. Don't see that changing much.
  • Coach Cal is likely to continue trying to develop his 5-stars and leave the outside shooters on the bench.
  • Opposing coaches will continue to pack the paint, guard Monk, and dare our non-shooters to take outside shots.
Defense in both transition and half-court should improve but not as much as it needs to, due to weak SEC.

Number 2 or 3 seed in NCAA Tournament.

Should make Elite Eight and perhaps Final Four with the right matchups.

Number 9 unlikely.
