As we grind to our summer halt on wrestling talk I thought I would dust off some stuff.

The Gorriaran Award was introduced in 1949. Named after Manuel Gorriaran (NWHOF bio), the award goes to the wrestler who has the most total pins in the least amount of time.

PJ Duke won the Gorriaran Award this year with 2 pins. Duke took 3:34 to complete the pair of pins. That ranks him fifth of ten on the list of two-pin winners.
  • Can you name the other nine two-pin winners?
Duke became Penn State's fifth Gorriaran winner.
  • Which school's wrestlers have won the most Gorriarans?
Five wrestlers have won the Gorriaran twice.
  • How many of the five two-timers can you name?
The two-time winners racked up an impressive 39 total pins on the way to their awards.
  • Can you name the wrestler with the most pins while winning the Gorriaran?
  • Can you name the wrestler with the least pins while winning the Gorriaran?
Bonus:
  • Name the six Iowa Hawkeyes to win the Gorriaran.
Edit: I mistakenly said there were six two-timers. There are only five.

Bruce Kinseth is one of the Hawkeyes. Pined his way through B10s and NCAAs.

Go for the obvious. Guessing Gable is one of the two-timers

Stoll and Perry for Iowa winners as well. Not sure on other 3. Would guess Lou as one of them.

Other 2 timers maybe David Taylor and Hodge? Gable probably the answer to most pins among 2 timers as well.

Going with ISU as school with the most winners.

Stoll, Perry, and Lou Banach are correct.

So far we have Kinseth (1979), Banach (1983), Perry (2006), and Stoll (2018). We are missing the first and third Hawkeye to win the award.

Taylor and Hodge are correct for other two-timers. Gable had 10 pins in his 2 Gorriarans to lead the way.

And ISU is correct with a total of 8 Gorriarans won by 7 wrestlers.

Hey, you're pretty good at this.

Most pins in least time I thought you were asking.
Got it. Gable had the most pins while winning the Gorriaran (10).

But it does beg the question which wrestler is the "All-Time Gorriaran"? Among the Gorriaran winners who had the most pins in a single tournament in the least amount of time?

Taylor had 5 pins in a total time of 13:52 in 1973. But that only places him second on the list. The all-time leader pinned his 5 opponents in an absurd 5:31. And he did it as an unseeded wrestler. Name that man.

Did Doug Striecher win the award in 1990?

Indeed he did. His 3 pins in 1990 were good for the win. Striecher is also the answer to another trivia question. With three loses, he ties Lock Haven's Mike Rogers and North Carolina's Evan Sofa for the most loses by a Gorriaran winner. Each of the three had 3 pins among their 5 wins. And all of them finished sixth.

The last one is gonna be tough.

Nope. It is my mistake. I had Ted Ellis with 2 twice, but he had 2 once and 4 once.

Extra credit for finding my errors.

Someone guessed a pre-Gorriaran wrestler on 34.

So I decided to compile the list of guys who woulda won, if only they had the award.

There are a couple notables on there.

Bill Koll would have won with one. In 1946 the field was pretty small due to the ongoing effects of the war. There were only 6 pins the entire tournament with six different guys getting one each. Koll was the quickest. Lest you think too little of Koll, note that he repeated 2 years later with a respectable 5 pins.

The next year Dick Hauser would have won with 3 pins in 10:49. Which doesn't seem that notable except that the runner up would have been his Cornell (IA) teammate, Dale Thomas, who also had 3, but he took 10:50.

A respectable 5 pins? I guess he did ok right? 😆

Just joking. Anything over 2 is outstanding, 3+ is phenomenal!
