I hate losing but it’s better this way. Pike has better start figuring out player combos. It’s really simple - more Hyatt, more Jones, less Mulcahy and McConnell. We can still make this a successful non-league slate if we run the table - which we can do.

I don’t agree with thinking a loss might be good. Besides that, I just don’t think we are good, so tonight’s result, win or loss, probably doesn’t change anything for the season.

No, it’s not. Rooting for a loss is idiotic. Ugly wins are better than losses. And if you think any coach is suddenly going to competent rethink his rotations after an early season 3 point loss, you’re a fool.
Gonna be lots of fools on the board tonight. I may need to step away for 24 hours to let them vent.

Not just after a loss, but after three mediocre wins.
That’s fine if he doesn’t. This is his last year to make the dance and jumpstart recruiting m. With his subpar recruiting and baker and harper gone, we could be sub .500 next year

In the middle of the season, yes. But at this point, no. Four game sample size is plenty. McConnell is a liability offensively and so is too much Mulcahy.

Says who? Were you asleep for 30 years? Take a breath.
You think we can dance next year? Lol. It’s this year and then hope we can recruit some better players off success this year.

Regardless how you feel about fools.

Pike has to run practice blindfolded to run the offense he does

You’re an idiot and this is your typical “look at me” posting to make this a thread. The only thing that changes with losing vs pulling it out is that we are one game worse and have to win one extra game to make the tournament.

Mulcahy was solid tonight on both ends of the floor. Perhaps he finally woke up. McConnell is a different story..Hot garbage shooting, and yet he continues to shoot. Insanity.
Agree, Paul had his best game of the year: 9 points on 4-9 shooting with 5 boards, 3 assists (a couple of which were gorgeous), and 2 steals and only 1 TO. Biggest issue was the ridiculous foul/FT disparity, which also kept Cliff on the bench, which really hurts with no real backup - and that's likely to happen a lot in the B1G, as other teams will see this tape and know to hammer it inside.

This.
And Jones does not yet have the chops on D.

It happens. Teams take huge steps back after losing contributors, then they develop the next group. I’m not expecting to be an every year tournament team. Make a couple, the core graduates, restart the process. If he misses for four years in a row, that’s different.

Mulcahy looked okay tonight. Looks like he’s still getting used to running the point. McConnell has been extremely disappointing. Might be worth benching him for Hyatt. I think if Caleb continues to play this way, Pike will make a lineup change or “start” him but give Hyatt way more minutes. Hyatt plays with the most effort out of everyone on the team.

Paul was not the issue tonight. Caleb was awful, and we played way too much one on one hero ball in the first half. Add in letting DePaul get to the line 20+ times more than we did. Hello, loss.

Cliff goes out. Agee got the ball in good position several times but goes up SOFT. If Shaq Carter is the backup, we win.

Oh well.

The elephant in the room right now is this

We have four below average man to man defenders (Paul, geo, Agee and Jaden )

And a young center that is raw

Pike isn’t going to get these guys to play defense the way he wants to ...

So can we become an effective zone team on the fly ...which will allow more offense on the floor

Dead serious ...because if you watch the defense in our first four games ...you sound see it

How bad can Jones possibly be on defense that we have to continually throw Caleb out there? Sorry, not buying it. Caleb may not be this bad but he does not have the upside that Jones has and if we don’t start seeing it soon it may be too late to make a difference later.

I said it in game thread
If (when) Caleb plays, DO NOT SHOOT!
At this point, his shot is like a turnover.

It’s amazing that his shots, all of them, aren’t even close. How many don’t even catch iron? 4 games of this. I don’t get it. I remember in the early eighties, Notre Dame had a guard named Dan Duff I think literally wasn’t allowed to shoot. That’s what Caleb should be until further notice. Layup or pass. That should be it.

Mulcahy was good on one end. The other end he was passable for 34 minutes, but the last 6……

Caleb is looking to shoot, every time he get the ball he’s looking to drive or shoot.

This. Those who say he was good on both ends clearly weigh offense more than defense. He was an absolute sieve defensively for most of the night, though credit is due for that few minute run where he seemed to have a million steals. He can’t stay in front of anyone, and I mean that literally. He got beat off the dribble by DePaul’s (backup?) center.

That's why he isn't and never will be a point guard. Teams with quick guards are going to hurt us. Not replacing Jacob wasn't a good thing.
