Used Tennessees bitching to get us the third highest bowl payout we've ever had on a 6-6 season.

Music City is a $5.5 million payout, higher then Belk, Gator, Liberty and Texas (and just behind Outback). Tennessees bitching resulted in them going to a game with a $2 million less payout.

You have to wonder if there were any bowl payout negotiations behind the scenes to make this work. Fulmer is dumb enough to do it straight up, but if I was him I would have made bowl payout equilibrium part of my negotiating strategy. UT had wins over UK and MSU so he had some leverage and I'm pretty sure the payouts come through the SEC office.

Roughly payouts are divided into 20 shares. The participating team gets 5, the conference office gets 1 and all 14 teams get a share (so the participating school actually gets 6 shares). Missouri will not get a share this year. Half of their share will go to them in five years and the other half is divided 13 ways.

$5,500,000 payout

Participating Team Share: $1,100,000
Conference Office Share: $275,000
14 Teams Each Receive: $275,000
Missouri loses: $275,000
13 Teams Each Receive: ~$10,600
Missouri gets $137,500 in five years

So we end up with around $1.39 Million for this game.

It does. Participating teams get roughly 3/10 of the payout and non-participating teams get a little over 1/20 of the payout.

We won't "make" any money on the bowl. But we'll lose less than we would if we had gone to the Belk. Our payout share will cover travel costs, hotel, meals, swag, practice location, etc... I'd be highly surprised if we netted much at all on it.

I wanted Nashville. I would have liked playing Virginia Tech since we have never played them, but I also like playing Louisville. According to ESPN's FPI State is the #8 SEC team, and Louisville is the #8 ACC team. My guess is we'll be favored by 6-7 points.

We don't lose money on bowl trips. Because we share the revenue of our bowl game with the SEC, you have to also count the money we receive for the SEC's eight other bowl teams.

Who cares what the little bit of discrepancy in pay out is. Tennessee obviously didn’t. That doesn’t mean we got “the better bowl.” I personally am not as keen on playing the same schools in recent bowl games. With that said, all things considered, it’s a great choice, for a lot reasons this year.

Bowl payout for the Music city is $5.5 million, so in (c). Taxpayer Bowl is in (b). So, we get an extra $200k over Tennessee.

Nope. Never played them. FWIW, my first college football game as a young child was the 1970 Liberty Bowl between VT and Mississippi. We got there a bit late and VT was up 14-0. Mississippi won 34-17. Only thing I remember is it was cold as hell.
