Just a Purdue fan and alumni who lived in the New Brunswick area for several years after college and became a Rutgers fan via osmosis. That was in the 2000s when I lived in that area (almost the entire decade).

Always liked the school (in general, a good academic school), the sports fanbase was very loyal, friendly and knowledgeable despite some tough years and really showed up to create some great atmospheres at games and tough for opposing teams. A lot of similarities to Purdue actually. Also both are public universities with good Engineering programs that when you get further out of state, people think they are private schools (since it doesn't have the state name in the university).

I said this a couple years ago and I'll say it again, I really like Coach Pikiell. Even 3 years ago, you had to respect how the teams played even though you didn't have the quality of players you have now. Seeing the success you had starting last year was not surprising and now this year it is getting even better. Being from Indiana, the fundamentals of basketball are, in general, taught pretty well even in junior high and high school level, so it was easy to see that Pikiell was a really good coach and he got his teams to play good solid basketball and also they played really, really hard and together. I think with so much talent in the tri-state area, just getting even 2nd or 3rd tier type players to stay home (1st tier seem to always get snagged up by the blue bloods) and not go out of state will have you guys doing well for a long time.

Now, with the guys you have now and the development they've had, you'll be favored in more games than not and rightfully so. We're (Purdue) a bit inconsistent this year in closing out games and we'll need to bring our A game tonight for a full 40 minutes to have a chance to win.

Good luck tonight and it should be a fun game to watch.

Every time we play you guys, it makes me crave to get a chicken and broccoli boli from Stuff Yer Face. I watched a lot of games there and the food was so amazing (and there is no place like it anywhere else I've lived). Hopefully they are still around and surviving the lockdown. It would be a shame if a place like that had to close (unfortunately like a lot of other small businesses).

Great post! Thx for the kind words. Re: the game, this matchup concerns me. If we were 100% healthy I'd feel much more confident, but with Baker still not himself, Young nursing a hip bruise, Caleb still redshirting (for now), big Cliff, our starting center who provides defense, shot blocking/altering and rebounding out with a sprained knee, and our only other frosh who plays meaningful minutes (Mag) finally back from an ankle but also won't be 100%, I worry about this one, your solid big men and 3-pt. shooting. We need to be sharp, create some turnovers, get some fast break points and stay out of foul trouble, esp. our depleted frontcourt. If you guys are able to slow things down, keep the score low and force a halfcourt game on both ends, it could spell trouble for RU, esp. if our bigs get a lot of whistles.

Me! Those of us who like broccoli, really like broccoli. With that said, I love cheesesteaks. However, when in Philly, instead of a cheesesteak, I'll often order a roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich instead. 😋

Great post . Purdue and Rutgers are really developing quite a rivalry which started 3 years ago when Geo was a freshman and Corey and him played that great game at MSG where Rutgers came up a little short and your team was loaded that year with Vince Edwards as a senior I think and Carson Edwards as a freshman. Last year’s nail biter at Purdue to seal our NCAA bid ( which Covid obliterated) was also intense and super competitive. There is a lot of mutual respect between Painter and Pike which will likely make these games wars home and away for years to come.

Not gonna lie... I thought Purdue was a private school until just now lol

I know right? I grew up in West Lafayette (which is where Purdue is located) and so it was nothing special and just the local university. (As I grew older, I learned that it was a highly ranked public university, much like Rutgers). When I moved to NJ from Indiana, I remember many people thinking Purdue was a private, Ivy League type school (I mean the first few astronauts on the moon were from Purdue). So, it was really cool to me. It gave me more of a sense of pride in Purdue that I didn't have growing up.

Can you believe that when I went to Purdue (late 90s, early 2000s), in-state tuition was something like $4K per year? Now, even tho it is public, in-state is like $15K at least. Insane. I guess we have to pay for the stadium upgrades somehow, because the curriculum hasn't changed that much. That topic could be another thread altogether.

I know I know. I can't explain it. I tried a lot of bolis during my time there and for some reason, that combination was my favorite. Not sure I'm a huge fan of broccoli on it's own, but in a boli? Amazing.

Thanks. Tough breaks with all the injuries.

Maybe we are catching you at the right time from our perspective. We don't have the reliable bucket getters or an elite defensive center like you guys, but we have a pretty solid roster about 8-9 deep. While we don't have Carsen Edwards type player, this is probably one of our deepest teams in terms of the quality of our 6, 7, and 8th player. However, 5 of them are freshmen, so still learning and inconsistent. So, the future seems bright, but this season, not very consistent.

We've had struggles against physical defense (against Clemson and Miami this year) and had a lot of turnovers as a result. Lost both of those games as a result of those turnovers. Hoping that we've toughen up enough, but I think that is still a concern for us tonight. We're can be pretty good in our offensive efficiency if we don't turn it over (Williams in the post and several good outside shooter surrounding him along with 1 or 2 young guys that can break you down off the dribble ... not the quality of Harper or Geo yet ... but young and developing). We are not a great defensive team (not terrible, but not great) and we push the ball up as much as we can to get an easy bucket, but if nothing is there, we run motion offense or set plays and will likely not shoot it early in the shot clock unless it's a great team shot.

Thanks. Yeah, that year when Vince was a Senior was a great year and team for us. Haas (the big center) got injured in the tourney in our first round game (broken his elbow) and we got to the Sweet 16. (we were hoping for a Final Four or Elite Eight run, but Haas was the guy we couldn't afford to lose. We ran the offense through him essentially). That year's team had 4 guys that eventually signed in the NBA (albeit in small almost incognito type roles). (Haas, Vince, Dakota Mathias, Carsen).

I remember last year's game well. Geo was unbelievable making all kinds of difficult shots and in the clutch. I remember when Covid ended the tourney, the first team I felt bad about was you guys since it had been so long since you had been there and you weren't a fringe team that would have just gotten in. I think with the right bracket, you had a team that could make a run. I think good guard play in the tourney is almost required to make a deep run and you guys had that.

Coach Painter definitely, definitely has a ton of respect for Coach Pikiell. This was part of this pre-Rutgers game press conference and Painter is usually very respectful to other teams, but he also doesn't embellish or sugar coat much at all. He kind of just speaks very bluntly and honestly, which honestly we like. I can't recall him speaking so highly of a coach and program as he does right here.

When we first entered the conference Purdue would absolutely destroy us. It looked like they were playing a different sport. I wondered if we would ever beat them.

I think that was just timing. We had some really strong teams when you first joined the Big Ten. Also, in the years with Coach Keady in the 90s it was strong but the 2000s were kind of rough for us and the first few years of Painter remind me of when you first joined the Big Ten. Painter has taken our program, in my opinion to a higher level than Keady and we really like him (though that wasn't always the case from within our fanbase believe it or not). The Elite Eight run we had with Carsen seemed to have improved his recruiting.

I think the success you guys are having now can do the same for your future years ahead.

Great post. I was born and raised a Rutgers fan, but Purdue has been my #2 School and team since I was about 13 and rooting for Joe Tiller's "basketball on grass" (circa 2002).

Any other day I would say "Boiler Up!", but today I can't. So... "Lets go RU!"

Nice. Yes, Tiller turned around our football program from some dismal years. Good memory on the "basketball on grass"!

Regarding "Boiler Up!" and not being able to say it today, I respect it and wouldn't expect it any other way from a true RU fan. :)

Thank you! And good game tonight!

Stuff yer face is alive and well. They closed down during the initial part of the lockdown, but I was there twice to eat during the summer, outside w social distancing and it was as good as ever!! Hopefully you can swing through for a road game one year and visit again when things are back to normal.

Thanks. Yes, good game!

Thanks for the update on Stuff Yer Face! Glad to hear that are still around and doing well. That would be awesome if things go back to normal and do a road trip up that way.

Take care and all the best for the rest of the season. Hopefully, they won't cancel the tourney and you guys can bust some brackets.

Great post, good game, and best of luck the rest of the season. And we agree on SYF, as I've probably eaten over 1000 bolis over the last 40 years - but none with broccoli in them, lol...

And I’m pretty sure Cornell is the only private of the original Land Grant schools.
While the university as a whole is private, there are four "statutory" colleges which are funded by New York State with corresponding "in-state/out-of-state" tuition rates - so while not explicit, there is a portion of Cornell that is "public" in a way.

Clemson and Auburn too
And like Purdue, both are the land grant institutions (established initially to provide agricultural and applied/technical focused education) for their respective states, not their in-state peers U of So. Carolina and U of Alabama, and Indiana U.

One more that's private is MIT. While Cornell is exclusively the land grant institution of NY State, Massachusetts' land grant designation is shared between MIT and UMass. Both were established in response to the Morrill Act....MIT was founded as a technical/applied science school while UMass was started as the state's agricultural college, but of the two MIT came first by a few years so it could be rightly considered the "original" land grant school of that state.

Yale was an original LG school but it was stripped from them in 1893 and given to what is now UCant

Brown too, before the land grant was later designated to the agricultural college that became URI.

Not sure to the extent to which it happens nowadays with how competitive college admissions has become but back in the day the "public" Cornell divisions were considered an easier "back door" way to get admitted into Cornell where you didn't quite need to have elite Ivy-level academic credentials. Might have even helped provide them with a way to get some of their student-athletes admitted into the school along the way.

This. Purdue in bball like Ohio State in football. Winning a game at Mackey like at the Horseshoe - can’t even dream of it ever happening. Now we’ve won 3 in a row against them. Crazy
