The wife's paternal grandfather was loading up into a glider with the 101st Airborne right about now 82 years ago. Just a 26 year old farmer from Indiana who did his bit. He saw some stuff, but didn't talk too much about it. I've posted this before, but my wife said he would tell one story about him and a few buddies getting separated from their unit around the time of Battle of the Bulge. For over a day they were lost, and then they stumbled into a barn, and due to their exhaustion abandoned proper security and all fell asleep. They awoke to the unmistakable sound of a German tank outside the barn. They scrambled away from the sound to a rear door to make their escape. As he exited he turned and saw a "kid", in a German uniform staring at him from the door on the opposite side of the barn. The kid had his rifle up, but not in a firing position. He lowered it, and they stared at each other for a few seconds, then he turned and started running.
He would chuckle and say something to the effect of, "Whoever has a tank gets to sleep in the barn".

By chance I was watching a rerun of Foyle's War a few weeks ago, and it was the episode Andrew Scott guest starred in as a soldier accused of turning on Britain. He's a fine addition to the cast.
Not sure if there is a what are you reading thread, here, but I finished Operation Biting a few weeks ago. Max Hastings is a fine writer, and this book details a 1942 raid on a German radar installation by the fledgling British airborne forces. 100 something men dropping out of the belly of bombers into France to seize a German radar, and remove it in coordination with the Royal Navy. Pretty wild stuff to read about.
It's reflecting on operations like that, and thinking on nights like this the courage and heroism, and the guys who just did their bit on D-Day, that gives a person pause.

My father's first battle was at the Bulge. Shipped in as a replacement platoon for those injured or worse. He was going through basic during D-day. The greatest generation, indeed!
I guess they were not thinking, "What's in it for me", and were scared, but thinking about their fellow soldiers, and protecting their loved ones.

My dad was in England as part of Army Group Patton (Quicksilver) sending fake radio messages to make Germany think Patton was leading the invasion at Calais. They had a script that they followed that announced arrivals and movements of phantom units.

That's an interesting bit of history, but if it was recorded in June of 1964, Eisenhower had already finished his service as POTUS. Yet Walter Cronkite continually addressed him as "General." Wouldn't you think that Eisenhower should have been addressed as "Mr. President?"
