I thought I read where his magic number was $3.1M which is way over the available slot money. Of course, I believe everything I read on the internet. **

They appear to be able to offer him slot money. The question is whether he will accept slot money.

http://dodgersdigest.com/2018/07/04/dodgers-top-mlb-draft-pick-j-t-ginn-still-unsigned-ahead-of-friday-deadline/

It's looking more and more like the Dodgers are going to be able to offer close to what some are saying the price to sign Ginn will be. It really looks like the only way he ends up at MSU is if he really wants to spend 2 years in college instead of the minors.

Ginn’s price is over $3 million. That’s the case right now....so no, they are not even close. Dodgers can’t go any more over slot than the ~$500k on top of the $2,275,000 slot for total if $2,775,000, and that’s assuming they don’t go over slot at all on any of their remaining 11 unsigned picks. The Dodgers final offer will be in the $2.5 - $2.7 range, depending on how far over slot they go on the other picks. It’s all going to come down to whether the Ginn’s number they gave to the Dodgers is firm or whether they will accept $2.5 - $2.7. It’s up to the Ginn’s because Dodgers ain’t gonna budge any more than that.

From the article - “For argument’s sake, let’s say Grove gets the $300,000 over slot amount. That would make his bonus $1,217,000. By my math (which is probably wrong), that means the Dodgers could offer Ginn as much as $2,779,849 without crossing the 5 percent (less $1) threshold.”

They will be able to offer $2.7M to $3.0M, depending on how much over slot they go with the 2nd RD pick. That’s IF they go over slot with their second pick. There’s just not much difference between $2.8M or $2.9M and some magical $3.1M number that we keep hearing.

I hope he comes to State, but unless he REALLY wants to play here for 2 years, I don’t see how he doesn’t sign this week.

The $300,000 over for Grove is all but official. It’s happening. That means the $2,779,849 is the most he’s getting....and it’s a 99% certainty he won’t even get that much because the Dodgers aren’t going to want to lose the majority of their other 11 picks. Ginn’s ain’t gonna get their number. It may have all been just negotiating tactics and not matter that much, but they aren’t getting it or getting anything close to it.

Did Ginn say his price was over $3M? Where is everyone getting this information?

He’s right. His math sucks.

$5,288,200 up 5% = $5,552,610. Dodgers have spent $2,035,040 already.

They have $3,517,570 left to spend total for first and second round pick. Ginn is going to cost them a minimum of $2,275,800 against the draft pool whether he signs or not. Leaving ~ $1.24mil to overpay the second round pick by almost exactly the $300k they are rumored to be going over slot to sign him. Meaning all they have left for Ginn is slot money anyway.

Overpaying the second rounder is a dead giveaway. Ginn to State.

Its been thrown around as the number he and his family were holding out for (or wanted the Dodgers to think they were holding out for at least). Multiple people with no connection to each other and only to the family have all reported the same thing. I personally trust it to be accurate.

I want it to be accurate...

It’s not really the accuracy of the number that is in question. It’s how firm the number is. It’s one thing to play hardball and throw out a huge dollar figure after draft day. It’s another thing entirely to turn down what is still multiple millions of dollars when it is the “take it or leave it” offer on the last day he can sign. So, we’ll certainly see how it plays out shortly.

Heard from a parent of a Brandon baseball player last weekend that was under the impression he will be at State. Said he reeeeally wants to have the college experience.

I'm been involved with MSU athletics too long to get my hopes up too high, but that was encouraging to hear. Guess we will know soon.

From everything I have read, it seems like he is genuinely torn and wants to play in college with his friends. That is certainly a priceless experience that you can’t get back. I can’t imagine an 18 year old wants to live the minor league life. It seems miserable to be quite honest. It’s a hell of a difficult decision to make to turn down millions though.

I really think Mangum came back because he knew he would get a better experience in college and wanted to maximize that. It’s clear he loves State and would probably stay 10 years if he could.

To be fair, Mangum didn't turn down anything close to a couple million

True. I hope can make it in the majors. I read something about him trying to beef up a little over the summer and work on hitting homers.

What’s the Tommy John likelihood there? Sounds like another Aiken situation.

Not an arm issue but an issue with the wrist. With the talk of his spin rate on his curveball, the wrist could be a big deal, could just be a negotiation tactic. We don't know yet.
