As one might expect, there was more to the discontent with McKeen than just a couple of losses to the arch-rival and a .500 record in his ninth season. Former player Bob Sanders had developed some financial and political clout in Mississippi and the well-heeled alumnus expected McKeen, Noble and others at Mississippi State to meet his every whim. When McKeen did not, Sanders began the covert process of having him removed. Sanders inflamed an already-rowdy student contingent and used his power to swing board members in his favor. He eventually gained the wherewithal to have McKeen fired. Gone was the coach who led Mississippi State to a 65-19-3 overall record during nine non-losing years. Interestingly, Alabama was 65-23-4 over the same time frame. Six of McKeen’s seasons ended in seven or more wins.
It would be 16 more years before Mississippi State would reach seven wins in a season. Five coaches tried to reach that win total from 1949 to 1962, some of whom went on to national recognition at other places, but none could achieve McKeen’s greatness at Mississippi State. Would Mississippi State have paralleled the Alabama football program into the future like it did when McKeen was head coach? It’s only conjecture at this point.
There was a group who wanted to fired Jackie in 1996. There was a group who wanted to fire Mullen in 2013. You simply have to hope there is leadership in place, whether a president, AD, or both, who can withstand the pressure. Now lucky for us, both Jackie and Mullen won their way out, but the poor leadership reared its head when we didn't fire Jackie in 2002.Well,well, isn't this the most mississippi state thing ever to do? Why does our administration continue to crap in it's own shoes? And to think we've could have possibly moved on to something great or had continued success.
The only part of that that matters is that HE wanted to move on. Had he not, he obviously would have done the little things better, and would have endeared himself to more fans.Discontent with the head coach seems to be a big part of our DNA. This is why I believe the useful life of a coach is around 8-9 years both on the coaches part as well as the fans. Mullen is a good example....he wanted to move on and many of the fans wanted him to as well.
