Myles Johnson is, by all accounts, everything we want our student-athletes to be. And he's a good reminder that basketball isn't everything.
He's well-rounded and a good student in a really tough major. He was on the video board during the Michigan game speaking in Japanese. He's going to go on and be successful in whatever field he wants to go into.
I read an article about Luka Garza the other day. From what I can tell, he is a basketball-playing robot. His dad and uncles played collegiately/overseas. His days in the off-season consisted of drills, pick-up games, strength training, and more drills. I'm sure the article was making a point of selling his work ethic and I don't know a thing about him off the court so this is not meant as any criticism but my impression is that the dude is 100% basketball, 100% of the time.
Iowa fans are (rightly) proud of Garza's work on the basketball court.
As a Rutgers fan, I'm proud of what Myles does on the court, too. But I'm equally proud when I read articles like this about the academic success and the volunteer work.
A team full of robotic, basketball-only All-Americans would be a lot of fun. But in the big picture it's a lot more important for the world to have Myles Johnsons in it than it is to have basketball robots.
