Is playing golf safe? Walking with your clubs probably is, but how about riding in a cart that probably hasn't been cleaned since the last person used it. Not to mention sitting next to your golf buddy, within a foot.

What do you think? That's not exactly practicing social distancing. And around here, lots of people are "working from home" and the courses are full on a day like this.

I think so. My son works (cart boy) at a golf course and they disinfected carts after each use yesterday.

Most courses have taken bunker rakes up, only allowing one person per cart, and putt with the flag sticks in. To me that takes most of the danger out of it. And they are disinfecting carts after every round. All a person has to do now is stay 6 feet away from another golfer if they are playing in groups.

Great if they're doing that. I'll have to call and check if they're doing that locally. Thanks.

If you are 1' away from a buddy, then you arent following the suggested distance.
Take that for what it's worth to you.

I would for sure be willing to walk a course...but why golf when you can spend those 4 hours riding a bike on the paved roads, gravel, or singletrack?

Because it takes a special kind of fellow to want something as hard and phallic shaped as a bicycle seat shoved up his *** for four grueling hours.

Played last week.
Golf shop and grille had hand sanitizer so I wiped down the cart myself and didn’t take the flag stick out at all.
Golf is a great way to be outside AND safe distance as well.

My golf game is especially suited to social distancing, once I tee off. It's rare that I'm within 30 feet from anyone after that.

I played the other day and it was walking only. They had the club house and the pro shop closed so you had to call and check in for your tee time. They also took all the flag sticks and bunker rakes. Playing without flag sticks was pretty frustrating. Lol

I guess it's a moot point anyway - just got a text that Gov Ivey (AL) has ordered all non-essential businesses to close, and not many would insist that a golf course is essential.

I called the course, and they supposedly were sanitizing carts between uses, but I've seen the guy who cleans carts .... Also, they were charging double the cart rate for a single rider - can't really blame them for that.

We canceled. Just not worth the risk. I'd go if I could walk, but degenerated lumbar discs don't allow walking very far.

Canebrake has been booming since all of this started. People with nothing to do is good for business. They are riding one person to a cart. The flag sticks were out a couple of days ago. I have no idea if they are wiping the carts down after each round though, I would hope so.

All the courses up here are giving everyone separate carts.

Oh that for sure is what should happen. Courses rake in the $ for single cart use and golfers arent sitting on top of one another. Win win.

My 1' comment was in response to Rocket asking if it was ok to golf and mentioned being 1' away from someone.

Hahaha. Corporate America has shut down for a virus..... let's swing through Chick Fil A and go to the golf course!!!!

I'll have to check out Galloway next week. Haven't played there in a few years.

Just don't turn hard right off the tee box and ride for a couple hundred yards or you will run into me!

I played in Nashville yesterday, although muni courses are closed the rest are open. Pro-shop was closed but had a register set up outside under a tent along with the beverage cart, everyone had his own cart which were being disinfected after each round, all bunker rakes and ball washers had been removed. Pins were in but the cups were pulled halfway out of the hole which made putting much more fun (read easier). All the extra precautions made it seem about as "safe" as possible.

We have a guy or two in our golf group who seem to think the whole thing is blown out of proportion, so they're not really following the guidelines. Don't think I want to be around them for a while. Wouldn't put it past them to intentionally violate space or even cough on you. Being too macho can get you killed.

The only municipal course in Tuscaloosa, Ol’ Colony, closes at the end of business tomorrow for a couple of weeks. Non-essential, I suppose.

I’m a member of a private one here in austin. they cut down tee times (8-3 only) and carts available.

Took the cups inside the hole and turned them inside out....so there’s a very very shallow hole. Flag stick in at all times. Most putts that should go in do. Occasionally you get a kick out.

It’s like it’s most people’s only fairly safe outlet

My course has been getting a lot of play. I played today with a friend. We both have private carts that we keep in our garage. Seems like a pretty safe activity as long as you keep your distance from each other.

I’m a runner and cyclist. Pretty sure I have a much better chance of being killed doing that than playing golf or by corona.

Why wouldn’t it be? Even if you play in a foursome you possibly touch something that’s been handled by three other people. Meanwhile, pumping gas, you handle the same pump touched by 50. I think we have taking precautions that really have helped slow this thing down but the idea that playing golf with 3 close friends is going tom proliferate this thing is asinine.

Ask/pay for separate carts. I live on the MS National in Gautier and they are disinfecting the carts after each use (not just washing them down)...
