So we have a new GM that has had like 8 jobs in 16 years. Sounds like a very loyal and committed hire but I’ll give him the benefit until I see what he does 🤔 His first week losing Hines, Godswill and Clark doesn’t look so good. He’s almost as bad as the portal players jumping ship with all the job hopping. We should pay Artie K half the NIL money to be the GM and tell him to recruit overseas players. This will be an every year occurrence so we either accept it or don’t. No use complaining. Root for the name on the front of the Jersey.

Its ridiculously early to critique the new GM. I said the same about AK and the fact SHU needs to target Europe more but even those guys are very expensive.

GM should have been hired by end of last summer. GM being here now has no relavancy to what happened in last 7 days.

I think this was a dumb hire this time of the year. The new GM isn't going to do much the first month. SHU should've save the money for another 7 months and hired him in October then have him ready for next transfer period. I got ridiculed by @PirateBlue08 but this portal season is not going to be a reflection on this guy's ability or lack of ability. He's just collecting a paycheck until we can see what he does next spring.

You keep saying this in every thread, can you give some schools that haven't hired a GM and have continued to have success? The only notable school I've found is Kansas...they haven't made a sweet 16 in the last 4 years.
Player A - I would like $1 million dollars to play for Seton Hall

SHU GM - we only have $400k available

Player A - I’ll look elsewhere.

That’s why. It’s a pointless position unless you are completely convinced he has a magical way of unearthing super cheap players year after year that will play well above expectations. Not likely.

It's not about the GM, it's about the money the school has to pay. Give us 50 million to spend next year, we'll do just fine with or without a GM. Give us 5 million to spend we'll have to overachieve to be decent with or without a GM.

I largely agree with this, but the new GM can also bring value to this year's portal activity. I would imagine (and hope) that he's been scouting and tracking kids all over the country in anticipation of being hired by someone before too long, and he should have a pretty good list of players he thinks would fit at Seton Hall.

Unfortunately when you do not have the resources to compete, that’s basically your only option.

it is very clear the settlement cap is a joke with all the money the big schools are paying. It is such a big FU to the commission because no one is evenly remotely hiding that it is pay for play.

I guess the only thing i will give Felt credit for is he said he didn't see anyway the big schools wouldn't circumvent the cap.

if anything the knowledge of the market and contacts the GM has may be SHU’s only hope at using its limited resources to field a competitive roster.
I think the coach and his staff are the best people to evaluate players and who can play within the coach's system. Our new GM has no clue as to what Sha and his assistants want in a player etc.. Sure Sha can discuss it, but I would rather Sha and his assistants do the player evaluation and tell the GM who they want and for the GM to simply negotiate price. If that is all the GM is doing we are wasting our money.

I don't want anyone but Sha and his assistants evaluating who they want and who can play for Sha and his system.

why? That’s not how it works in basically any professional sports organization. Coaching and scouting are two entirely different things, it also allows the staff in season to primarily focus on scouting other teams and preparing the team.

If you are recruiting HS maybe but with the portal you can't really know who is in it until it opens up. When it opened up Sha and his staff where able to use all the tools that are out there to see everything they need to know. They have the basketball experience and know how to see who would be a good fit. It is not just stats and how much it will cost.

We all can look at stats of a player just like a GM. But only Sha and his coaches can tell if a player will fit their system of play. Would they actually play well for Sha.

First of all, it’s not an either/or situation. GM should be using metrics and the staff should be complementing that with their visual assessment. Once again, the most important role of the GM is to negotiate with those targets that the staff wants. Take that responsibility off the coaches hands.

And any fees that are being paid to Deloitte to supposedly hold these deals to "market value" is a total waste.
