If someone passes you on the right, you’re driving slowly & endangering yourself & others. When your argument is getting a 10% or less like/dislike rating, that’s a clear sign you need to rethink your position because you are wrong. We’ve shown you videos and quotes from law enforcement that what you’re doing is dangerous. Quit being an asshile before you get someone hurt.

At this point in this conversation, either it is a sign of trollism or an uncurable assaholic.

He could be trolling. But I am feeling like it’s the latter. I shouldn’t let stupid **** like that upset me but it’s a weakness of mine. I’m allergic to stupid people.

Not driving "slowly". If the assigned speed limit is 70 and I am doing 72 with the lane clear in front of and in back of me, that is not "slowly", that is actually exceeding the speed limit. I am within 2 mph of fully obeying the speed limit law.

I hope you don’t actually do this, but I really hope you don’t stay in the left lane in any metro area. You will literally kill people going 2 over the speed limit in the far left lane. I have to go 10-15 over in Memphis to keep up with traffic on 240 and in Atlanta I have to go 20 over just to keep from getting run over(when there is no traffic jam).

It's understandable. Most people may make a post or two to support their unpopular opinion. Then there are those who continue to fight the battle and up the incendiary rhetoric. Your diagnosis is probably more on spot than mine with the evidence presented.

And this is what I do unless I am exceeding the speed limit with the intent to pass a truck who is in the right lane. As I stated, the roads where I ride in the left lane are where the right lane is messed up with patches for miles and nobody is riding my butt in the left lane. I will not tear the suspension up on my car just because some jackleg thinks they have the privilege of driving 80 in a 65, or 85 in a 70. They are the dangerous drivers, not me.

Happy New Year!

When (if) you look down at the speedometer and see it hitting 85...and some *** is passing you on the right like they're on fire...and you see the sign say 55...there's more than one unsafe act going on and the least is the person getting passed.

Modern automobiles handle 80 mph or more just fine.

The first speeding violation was to a man going 8 mph. It cost him one shilling.

The first speed limits in the US were about 14 mph, since that was what was considered "driving your horses too furiously".

In the early 20th century speed limits of 15-20mph were common.

When I was growing up it was 55.

It's now common to see 70 mph most places, and there are many western states where it is 80. There is also a 40-mile stretch of highway in Texas where it's 85 mph but they won't write you a ticket even at 100.

Speed limits are often set with the
expectation that people will drive 15% over whatever the limit is. I've passed cops going 80 in a 70 and they don't even look my way.

If you're driving 72 on an interstate in 2018 you're slowing down trafffic at best and you're going to get somebody killed at worst. If you want to drive slower, stay on the right.

It's common knowledge that the troopers will give you 10 on the interstates and up to 15 on the highway. You can safely set the cruise on 80 and the cops won't look your way generally. It's the guys going 72 in the left lane, and the trucks that are going 68 but feel the need to pass the ones going 67 that cause problems.

But the guys who have to go 90 and bully folks in the left lane are jerkoffs, too. Everyone should just run in the right lane, and pass in the left as long as you pass at the speed of the flow of traffic in the left lane.

I'll add to this after making the road trip from Tupelo to Jacksonville - my #1 pet peeve driving is when I'm in the left lane, stuck behind about 10 cars slowing passing a car in the right lane (which honestly doesn't annoy me at all), then some ******* comes up behind me riding my tail and decides he'll pass me in the right lane - then barely squeeze in between me & the car I'm following. Why do that? We're both in line behind bruiser doing 72 passing someone doing 71, so why piss my off by forcing your way in front of me to gain one car length? Then 9 times out of 10 once we all finally get past the slower traffic, I'll pass that guy back because he's really only going about 75.

Drives me crazy. I guess the problem is I don't tailgate the guy ahead of me, so there's a couple of car lengths for someone to get between me and the car ahead of me.

Drive west on Interstate 90 in South Dakota during Sturgis week in the left lane at 72 MPH and someone will ride by on a motorcycle and shoot your tires out. 100 mph in the left lane is slow that week. Your New Year's resolution should be to set some new goals with the first one being don't be a dick while driving.

Agree. Hate those pricks. And the occasional 2 lane highways where a poker is holding up traffic and finally you get a chance to pass when an ******* behind you almost runs over your *** before you can even get around the car in front of you. Idiots. I'm old but I promise, I don't poke. I always go about 5 over the speed limit. But that's not enough for lot's of folks.

It's much safer for that person to pass you on the left than on the right. If you're going 85, you're probably going too fast yourself, but you need to be in the right lane if someone is going faster.

If you are driving 10-20 over (or under) I can assure you are the problem on the road.

This is absolutely wrong (as is most of what you've posted). There are plenty of stretches of interstate where the flow of traffic is moving around 10 mph over the speed limit. Someone driving within 5 mph of the flow of traffic is going to be less dangerous than somebody driving 10mph slower than the flow of traffic.

I drive 35000 miles per year on some good roads, decent roads, fair roads and rough roads.

Some 4 lane roads are very beat up and have patches every 30 yards in the right hand lane.

I drive 72 miles per hour, and spend a lot of it in the left lane to stay off the rough patches. I set my car on cruise. I will speed up to 75-78 if necessary to get past tractor trailers. But I refuse to jump over in the right lane to get trapped behind big rigs just become some *** thinks they should be able to have a clear shot in the left lane at 80 mph.

I only stay in the left lane on interstates when there is copious amounts of big truck traffic. Otherwise, I move to the right.

Pass me on the right if you are in that bigvof a hurry and be happy.

And you and the other “ I think this is what the speed should be and everyone can just slow down” idiots are the reasons traffic cannot flow correctly, there are accidents due to chain reaction slowdowns, people get killed due to road rage, and people wreck having to weave around other cars.

It’s not up to you to regulate other drivers. It’s up to you to follow the law. The law doesn’t say that you should randomly pick a speed and pick when you are in the left and right lanes at random. The law says slower traffic stay right.

At TxDOT, we train under the Smith System of driving

Basically, it's Defensive driving on steroids:

-I keep a 4 second cushion as best as I can with the car in front of me (hard to do with the crazy texans driving on I-35 every day).
-Stay in the right lane as often as possible, and stay at least 1 mph under the speed limit.
- If I come up on an 18-wheeler, I either pass him very quickly or let him get way ahead of me. those are 40 ton missiles that can kill you if you're careless around them, and the wind shear the cause can blow you off the road.
- If someone cuts me off, I don't get pissed. You have to assume that everybody is an idiot on the highway, and expect them to do stupid things....and hope YOU don't do stupid things. Remember, you're driving something that weighs 1-5 tons, and losing your cool by getting mad at someone because you don't like the way they're driving can lead to fatal accidents....plus here in Texas, you never know who's packing.
- When you come to an intersection, stop at least one car length behind the bold stop line. You never know how some car or truck will cut their left turn. Also, if you get hit from behind, you won't be pushed into the intersection where you can get hit again.
