What is this thread about? Tennis or something? What is a GC?

The Giro d italia. The Tour of Italy. it is one of the 3 grand tours for cycling. 21 days
vuelta a Espana, Giro d Italia, Tour de France

The GC is the General Classification---over all winner. there are other winners too such as the points leader, king of the mountain, best young rider etc..

its sad that one has to pay t see coverage of the sport of road cycling while we have to endure other coverage such as corn hole--dont get me wrong i enjoy playing cornhole while tailgating and at BBQ's but cmon.

Don’t know crap about cycling except that wannabes constantly want to “share the road” during rush hour and it drives me nuts. I made the mistake (or good judgement) of calling a biker on a street during rush hour an “idiot” in front of my 5 year old. Now all bikers on city streets are idiots in her mind. I have yet to correct her.

Most of the members of this board don't even like the NBA, and that's a mainstream professional league for one of the Big 3 American sports. Nothing against cycling, but you probably won't find much of an audience among Husker fans/Iowa trolls.

It's bad enough that we have to pretend golf and soccer are sports, now riding a bike is one too?

Who is the best American bike rider? It was cool when Armstrong was good (before he got busted), not sure if we have any good cyclists anymore.

as far as road stage racing or for big tours i suppose the top 5 perhaps are:
Lawson Craddock, Chad Haga, Ian Boswell, Taylor Phinney, Tejay Van Garderen

But in cycling there are so many disciplines and many different types of races that suit a large variety of racers.

in road cycling there are climbing courses, flat courses that change the dynamic. there are crit races that are time based and have many many accelerations and technical cornering. there is track racing in a velodrome which nearly every race is a sprint. points races, scratch races, Keiren, and even relay madison races. Cyclocross has become very popular, gravel racing, and mountain bike racing has some different disciplines.

Pretty controversial decision by the race organizer after Van garderen snapped his chain and then encountered a crash to award the race leaders the same finishing time. so no change in GC standings. Jakobsen out sprints the great Peter Sagan for the stage win.

have you listened to the doctor who was on rogan’s podcast awhile back talking about lance armstrong?
thought it was a really interesting take. basically, makes assertion that in comparison to the euros level of cheating it was nothing.
i know nothing about cycling, but i always felt euros were just jealous.

it was an era that was steeped in heavy doping even by cycling standards. Armstrong doped as much or more than most of them. Read or listen to the audio book by Tyler Hamilton (the Secret Race). His book graphically describes the doping that Armstrong and US Postal practiced. Hamilton is bluntly forth coming regarding his involvement. The sad part is how Armstrong behaved off the bike regarding the destruction of others.

it has an ugly stigma.

pro cycling is considerably cleaner --the creation of the biological passport has really been instrumental. epo can be detected easier now and the age of red blood cells are able to be determined as well. there is still some amount of doping going on at the pro and even the amateur level of cycling--but nothing like it was in Armstrongs era
