Why not? It makes absolute perfect sense.
Because damn near every pitcher on our team is likely at least competitive with Southern's, and our hitters are much better. Because you don't want to waste a potential pitching gem vs a scrub team you should beat if our 2nd-stringers were starting.

It's not the end of the world because I feel great about winning the regional anyway. But I think we should take better advantage vs an opponent so clearly over-matched.

I'd start Smith and be ready to pull him quickly if he struggles early. You could still bring Ginn in if that happened. But if Smith cruises, you have an MLB high-draft pick arm still in your quiver.

It’s Plumlee or Ginn, IMO. Hope the freshman can get us some quality innings.

Either way, lets rough up their starter. I don’t want this to be a 5-3 type game.

Well, in their last outing, Smith against LSU was actually much more effective than Ginn against LSU.

it’s the right decision. You’d rather have a senior pitching Sunday to win the regional than JT at this point. JT is more talented obviously but if you’ve watched us play the last month it’s clear he’s lost some juice. Plus it gives JT 8 days of rest which is what he needs at this point in the season

I dont mind it. Ginn didn't look great after the 2nd inning last outing. He has had a couple of other "freshmen moments". Let him warm up to the regionals on a weaker team, maybe build some confidence and momentum going into the Supers.

It isn't what I would do, but I am not a professional coach, so what I would do doesn't mean squat

Smith pitched better against LSU lefty heavy line up than Ginn did. Use Ginn Friday, win (bonus: good performance helps get him over LSU). Use Small Saturday (prob Miami), win. Use Plum, Smith Sunday (prob Miami), win.

Interesting. I’d prefer Plumlee, but I’m ok with this. Most important is to save Small for a winners bracket game.

Winning game 1 in a regional is extremely important. I don't mind overcompensating here, particularly because we have a third very competent starter.

JT has not been the same the last month. Right now we have one ace and his name is Ethan Small. With Ginn, Plumlee or Smith you really don't know exactly what you are going to get from start to start.

Think I'd rather have that senior pitching a possible Monday elimination game, assuming we win the first two, then lose the 3rd. Not that I'm expecting to lose the 3rd.

Negative - If anyone other than JT starts Friday, Lemonis has the option of pulling the pitcher early if we get a big lead and saving him to pitch again if necessary on Monday. I cannot imagine a scenario where they would bring back JT on Monday regardless of the pitch count on Friday.

Positive - JT has been a little shaky his last few outings. A dominant performance even against a sub-par opponent might be just the remedy for his psyche.

I can't get into Lemonis head but for me its not about being concerned with losing to Southern. We should, nay we better be able to win that game with any of our weekend starters and prolly a few mid week starters. It is more about getting a freshman's feet back under him after clearly getting shaken up a bit last week in his last outing. Southern is the best opponent we have available to get that done right now.

LSU threw 4 of their better pitchers (Marceaux, Beck, Hilliard, & Petterson ) at home against Southern and lost 7-2. In 5 attempts we haven't beat LSU by 5 runs or held them to only 2 runs. I think we beat Southern but they will show up to play ball.

The main reason to start Ginn is you absolutely do not want Ginn starting against Miami. Ginn has shown he struggled against lefty heavy line-ups, it’s why LSU shells him. Miami is a lefty heavy line-up, Plumlee is the better matchup with Miami.

This is exactly it. I trust Plumlee over Ginn against Miami.

If he can go 7 or 8 innings that would be huge. Save the pen for later in the weekend.

Ginn hasn't gone 7 innings in over 2 months when we played Auburn. Yes, that would be great if he could give us 7 and the W. That would set up the whole regional.

He needs to either go 3 and be ready for Monday if we need him or get to 7. 5 innings + 2 or 3 relievers would not be ideal. Hopefully he can get some quick innings against SWAC teams.

Keep in mind...if we're assuming a Saturday winner's bracket matchup with Miami, assuming we win, and that Miami comes back through the loser's bracket...we'll face them again on Sunday, and if they win Sunday, again on Monday in what would be a loser goes home game. So, we'd use Small on Saturday vs Miami. Then on Sunday you are looking at potentially 2 more vs Miami, if they manage to beat our #3 on Sunday. Who do we pitch Sunday...Plumlee? If we pitch Plumlee Sunday and he loses, who's next in the high-pressure elimination game on Monday?

Yes, I know that would have Miami hurting with their arms.
