People need to stop getting fooled by video. No ones even close to defending him…Cliff could hit shots like that too. Mitchell Robinson on the Knicks puts up videos like this every summer and never ever takes 3s in games (or any jumpers).
Yeah, I would not take much from that video. Looks like the defense as in slow motion. Good to see him move well though. Thanks for posting @Rokodesh

Gotta love the gym shorts! Bold, unapologetic statement of style and personality.

If Ware is considered a PF because of size, then his depth chart placement still begins AFTER: Grant, Buchanan, Nwuli and Dortch (some of whom will also see time at WF - RU seems likely to see the 4 and 3 slots as somewhat interchangeable - as well as at times the 3 and 2 slots - with Zrno and Badalau in the mix at 3 and 2). His only minutes as a freshman seem likely available as the 3rd center.

His AAU and high school footage reminded me ... just a little ... of Woolfolk. Not awful, but of only spot value as a freshman, and too small to play many minutes at center.

I think Grant is going to be at the 3 a lot. I think his legs turned on him late, as it did for all the frosh, but he can really shoot.

Just a light run with no defense, but you can see size, strength, athleticism, timing, fluidity. His outside shot shows decent form for a big.

Not a game situation (much less a B1G-level game), but still a lot to like in the video, for what it is.
Thank you BillyC80. Just about everyone who has been on this board for more than a few months knows not to be fooled by these videos.

Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by I what I saw in this one. The kid seems to have potential.

The body is B1G ready from a strength standpoint and he has some shooting touch....the stats from the FT llne last year, were not good, but I'm certain with more work, it can be improved upon.

Worse case, against another teams backups, Ware should be available to play and score. If the staff tried to redshirt Dortch last year, it is possible a redshirt is possible, but my guess is he plays a role this year off the bench. No idea how he will perform against the roster in practices until he gets here in a couple of weeks.

Looks a little more smooth in his game than I remember, but still don't expect too much out of him year one.

Grant is never playing the 3 at RU or anywhere else. Buchanan and Nwuli will have the bulk of the minutes there or a guard if they go to a three guard lineup.

Can he box out, rebound, play some passable defense, put a miss shot back in the hole, as a freshman if he can do the above he can get on the floor for a few minutes most nights.

Buchanan is an inside scorer and has 30 pounds on Grant. Both are 23% 3pt shooters - but after 3 seasons of college ball, not sure why you’d think Buchanan will be much better than that at RU. Curious to see how the euros fit into the mix.

Mitchell Robinson can't hit FTS from 15 feet, much less 3s from 22

This. He can’t handle the ball at all. He’s not a wing.

Neither could Caleb. Buchanan handles the ball better than Grant and is a better defender. It’s for these reasons that Buchanan could possibly slide to the 3.

We don’t even know that Grant is a better 3 point shooter than Buchanan by the way. Your just hoping he is. Grant was 23% overall from 3. It’s a small sample but I’m not sure what makes you assume his numbers will improve to better than 33% but Buchanan can’t be 33% next year. Regardless - even if Grant is slightly better from 3 that doesn’t make him a better choice to play the wing. Forwards can take some 3s too.

I think 3 seasons of 23% for Buchanan makes me think improvement there is unlikely - while 23% for Grant last year makes me think he can go up a bit.

Wouldn’t be the first or last time I’ve been wrong (or right). Just an opinion in the boring part of the year.

Then explain why he shot 32.3% last year in his second season? 🤣

I'll wait on the line while you clean up the mess on aisle seven. 🧹

He shot 32.3% as a frosh. 17.5% as a sophomore (recovering from injury half the season). I have no idea whether or not he’ll be better than 23%, but I also don’t look at his stats vs Grant’s stats and think there’s clearly more hope for Grant as a shooter. 2 years of volatile data for Buchanan. One year of poor shooting for Grant. I’m not sure what makes the latter more hopeful.

Good catch, I misread how they listed the years. His post is extremely disingenuous and it's no wonder he gets pummeled on these boards regularly.

The vast majority of the basketball people responding to highlights know what they are looking for. You are looking at his body and fitness, you are looking at how he moves around the court, you are looking at lateral movement/quickness, you are looking at the form on his shot. You are looking at a bunch a things to get an idea of what type of player he can be and develop into.

Can we take the temperature down? It’s May and you guys are name calling over potential shooting ability of Grant and Buchanan on a thread about Ware

Not name calling. I offered a totally speculative opinion (that could be wrong or right), 5 months before games are played, largely informed by reading scouting reports of Buchanan, body size and build, and watching Grant shoot when it doesn’t matter. I’ve never tried to give the impression that I’m a basketball genius.

Look - the other poster is right. This thread is meant to be about Ware. I can’t resist commenting though about your taking “shooting when it doesn’t matter” as a metric to rely on for even guesswork. What does that even mean? Right now there is no available data suggesting Dylan Grant is a good shooter. He shot 57% from the FT line without a defender on him. Would be awesome if he works on his game and his shooting improves but there is no data to point to suggesting it will. It’s just about hoping he gets better.

Not sure where my expectations are for next year. We really saw Ogbole make a return post. That's when I knew to set the expectation lower. Ware looks okay. He may need that three point shot as he does not seem to be a really fast athlete. I understand he is a PF/Center.

It's the annual off-season reading the tea leaves argument about whether or not reading the tea leaves is a valid thing to do.
