Maybe he could play a few minutes each half just to see if he can become a spot-up shooter on the wing, and we play zone defense while he's in.

But I do see the merit in just letting him rest another week before Maryland.

Re-Injury is always the greatest concern to trainers and doctors, not rustiness.
Let him be rusty for the first B1G game, not re-injured.
I’ve forgotten how we played against Hofstra...lol
Jacob and Paul can run the show!
Look. we move to #21 without breaking a sweat

We have a week until BIG play starts, no need to rush him back for this game. Not to mention after our Monday game against Maryland we dont play for virtually another week (Sunday) against Illinois. The last thing you want to do is rush an ankle injury. This is unlike last year where the thumb affected some shooting but he could still play defense and didnt have to worry about his legs but could still give valuable minutes. I'd rather he get another two weeks of healing and some practice in and be back close to if not 100% for the Illinois game.

Am I reading too much in to this......

Caleb has no timetable of returning. That is different in my eyes that Caleb is out for the year. Or not mentioning a player that isn’t playing in an injured report.
If this season truly does not count against eligibility for anyone, I don't see why Caleb should not try to rehab and play later this season if he is fully recovered. That would be a huge boost down the stretch.

Caleb is redshirting so you’re not going to see him this year. I’m not quite sure why Jon included that in the tweet to be honest.

I’m selfish so I want to beat Cuse AND the Twerps but have Geo rest in time for the Illini...is that asking too much? Lol...

If he truly wants to skip a year playing to get healthy, then fine. But if he’s totally healthy, then it doesn’t make sense for him not to play later in the year UNLESS he thinks he might want to play 3 more years of college b-ball (and be in college for a total of 6 years), which if he officially redshirts this year, the free year of eligibility should allow him to do.

This is pretty simple. If he can run and jump without pain, you play him. If he can't, you sit him.

I would air on the side of caution though. Don't seem necessary to rush him back for an OOC game.

He’s taking a medical redshirt and will have two years of eligibility left starting in 2021-22.
Maybe he is. But there have been hints that he may play later this year. Hes already played 2 years so the most eligibility he can have left whether he plays or doesn't is 2 years.

No downside to playing later this year if healthy. Can't lose a season either way.

If he hasn’t practiced, I doubt if he would bring all that much to this game. There is no point in risking it. He should sit tonight.

Im worried about no Geo in games like this. We don't have the same depth as last yr. I guess we'll see tho

While I would love to have Geo play, if there is any game against a top opponent where we don’t need depth as much, it’s this game. Our team has enough healthy players, we are well rested AND our O is playing against a zone.

I'd agree there is less energy needed offensively against a zone. It also probably reduces the number of possessions too. However I'd think the majority of energy one uses in a basketball game is on the defensive end.

With our depth not as depthy right now the lack of Geo could mean 5 minutes added on to 4 guys that optimally we dont want to see.

At the end of the day we have 21 games that matter. 1 is important, but 5 or 6 is way more important.
