This is very fair. However arguments can be made and I don’t see a solution.

imagine having a child who went to school to play a sport and then have it cut because the cost of being competitive in football was too much and the athletic department had to be trimmed.

No, I’m actually very educated on the amateur sports landscape. I learned about the AAU circuit and the college basketball experience from a family member and their friends, some of whom are still in the industry. I also learned about the futbol academy system in Europe from another family member. Even if they don’t make the senior team, they’re still make a wage while in the system. I expect the G League to grow into that very soon. Not just that one team, but a farm system. The NCAA’s refusal to budge on this issue will be their downfall. But go ahead and believe that a scholarship to School X is enough while the NCAA loses more and more players to the G League in the coming years.

Actually, if you gave him a cut on each Rutgers Jersey/poster sold which included his likeness, Rutgers pocket would be hurt by the exact amount of that cut. Same for the NCAA.
Again, let him sell his likeness as Geo Baker basketball player and leave out the "Rutgers". My theory is there won't be much value there at all. Proof of this will be on how much profit he will make off his likeness after the season is over.

At the end of the day, the many of things we love won't exist in 10 years. In terms of college sports, it's much more likely that NCAA athletics completely collapse than the system gets fixed. And if it does collapse, it ain't coming back. You'll just have club sports with stars going from HS right to the pros. Non-revenue sports will transition to club sports.

I just hope golf and skiing avoid the mob, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm sure by 2030 both will be considered to be vehicles of systemic inequality and those who partake in either will be worthy of the glue factory.

I have no issue with athletes being able to earn endorsements or earning money to host a camp in their own time. There is no way to cut them into the revenue pool without becoming a huge mess.
If they could create some type of fund to give the players 10, even 25k upon graduation equally, I'd have no problem with that.

The issue I have is with the timing two days before the biggest game of their lives. They want to talk about it before the season, ok, during the season where we don't play all week, ok, but right now? All I'm saying is this team better not come out flat shooting 9% from 3 and not hustling. You want to be paid, then perform like it.

Problem is, why would "a few bucks" solve all this. Even if they make 10k a year, the NCAA league is worth billions of dollars.

My company was worth over $35 billion. I got paid a fair wage, worked my *** off, and had the right to leave for greener pastures anytime. I made them millions each year.
Their individual comp is WAY more as a % to their individual value added then mine ever was.

The music example is the exact example I've used for years how there is an unfair double standard for athletes compared to other college students. I'm not even talking about payment for players, but it's a huge double standard that a music major can go stand on the street corner in NYC and accept money (or sell a CD like Geo says) but an athlete can be given the game ball for scoring 4 touchdowns in a game but then commits a violation if they try selling that football afterwards.

Unfortunately I do not think it is that simple. Baker is looked up too by the younger guys. As is Harper. I am sure they are feeding this to the younger guys all season.

I have not read every post in this thread so I apologize if this has been said before. I have always believed that college athletes should not be compensated. I thought this mainly because the blue bloods and the SEC would exploit it . But Geo has opened my eyes to this. For those of you saying you are getting x,y,and z you are missing the big picture that Geo is stating.

If you are on an academic scholarship at RU Honors College and getting a free ride you do not have as many restrictions as an athlete. If you are a music major you can make money by playing music at night. If you want to get paid to tutor to make some extra money there in no penalty. My Son was on Scholarship at SOE and also got paid by the Office of instructional and research technology on the side. But the athletes have a list a mile long what they can and cannot do. Add on top of this the money the NCAA is making off of them.

IMO we need to take a deeper look into what he is saying. It does make some sense.

Whether you agree or disagree with him (and I have mixed feelings about it, to be honest), a couple points:

(1) If we lose on Friday (or ever, honestly) certain people on this board are going to try to blame the fact that Geo was on Twitter, FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE GAME, instead of staring at the wall and meditating about Clemson or whatever you guys expect the players to be doing instead.

This will be completely stupid. If he starts tweeting this stuff at halftime or 10 minutes before the game then we can revisit this.

The NCAA is saying he cant get paid based on his affiliation with the basketball team. If geo wants to start a company go for it. Why does everybody think other people read every single comment of theirs? Of course they’re not just in their rooms all the time, they still practice. But the day they went to the racetrack was Monday, the last day until strict bubble rules were put in place by the NCAA. Now that all teams are in Indianapolis, nobody’s aloud off of their hotel floor unless it’s for practice/game and the NCAA is making them wear these:

You have to understand why these restrictions were put into place originally. It was to reduce the chances that amateur sports would be corrupted. Many more fanatic fans would agree to buy a $500 autographed jersey to help their school attract a top recruit than would agree to outright contribute to bribing that player to come to the school. A slippery slope for sure.

I've become more disgusted with the NCAA as time goes on. There were clear violations at schools like LSU (coach on tape) and Kansas where it was clear they were cheating and paying top recruits. Duke does shady stuff that results in players/families receiving comp. How is that allowed to go on? If you are not going to enforce these rules, why not just allow top recruits to be bought and throw out all the rules to prevent it? Let the chips fall as they may. Then Geo and others could do whatever they wanted.

The booster now can hire the recruit's mom to a $1mm/yr job or hire the recruit themselves to a $1mm/yr "internship" and it's "technically legal" in the same way.

There isn’t really any parody in recruiting now; so I don’t see how this would make the situation worse. In fact, it may give other places a chance to compete without having to build crazy complexes like Clemson’s.

And really those issues shouldn’t stand in the way of finding a way to give players a share of the revenue they generate. Two separate things. There is doing what’s right / them (separately) figuring out how to adapt the sports to the consequences.
