I think he should buy SH season tickets to sit right behind Fred Hill all season....the guy who helped screw him.
Until Pikiell, Gary Waters was the best coach we have had in 30-odd years. Too many casual fans posted garbage on the old RU board attacking him because he mentioned God now and then, was not young and hip, and didn't immediately start recruiting 5-stars. They were convinced Freddie Hill Jr would, and a panicked Bob Mulcahy made one of the singularly nasty moves, putting FHJ in as Assistant HC in charge of reporting any stuff he deemed a failure on Waters' part to Mulcahy. Then Mulcahy was panicked into a singularly stupid firing of Waters after three NIT trips in 5 seasons. Between he and Julie, we have suffered through some baaaad AD's.
Good luck to Gary in retirement. He must have watched RU's trainwreck in hoops with bemusement. He didn't revel in it, because that is not who he is. A class person who was poorly treated by my school.

I always thought Waters was a good man, an average coach, and a bad recruiter. Not counting Pikeill, who looks good right now, I don't think we've had a good coach since Tom Young...lots of "averages" and three of the worst...Jordan, Hill, Littlepage.
I give credit to Littlepage in that he found his niche as an AD.I always thought Waters was a good man, an average coach, and a bad recruiter. ---I know three Nit bids in five years wasn't what we were looking for. But he did a helluva lot better than the three clowns that succeeded him!

Just because he was better then Hill, Rice and Jordan doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision to replace him. He did not deserve to get replaced in the manner it was handled though.
I always wondered if RU MBB would have become a good program, if Waters wasn't pushed out and Hill stayed as an assistant. It was 1000% the right decision. We were not going to take the next step without better recruiting. Ideally Hill would stay as a lead assistant. That fell apart quick, they gambled, and they lost. So be it. But being so close to the hump, we needed something extra to get to the NCAAs. It was the right move.
and "what the heck" does one have to do with the other? What the heck are you talking about? Waters willingly hired hill to his staff . Find me a news report stating otherwise.
