Until Pikiell, Gary Waters was the best coach we have had in 30-odd years. Too many casual fans posted garbage on the old RU board attacking him because he mentioned God now and then, was not young and hip, and didn't immediately start recruiting 5-stars. They were convinced Freddie Hill Jr would, and a panicked Bob Mulcahy made one of the singularly nasty moves, putting FHJ in as Assistant HC in charge of reporting any stuff he deemed a failure on Waters' part to Mulcahy. Then Mulcahy was panicked into a singularly stupid firing of Waters after three NIT trips in 5 seasons. Between he and Julie, we have suffered through some baaaad AD's.
Good luck to Gary in retirement. He must have watched RU's trainwreck in hoops with bemusement. He didn't revel in it, because that is not who he is. A class person who was poorly treated by my school.

It didn't help that his record was 79-75 overall but 28-52 in the BE. RU was looking (in the wrong places) for more than the NIT every other year.

He was a good coach, not sure if RU was the right spot for him, he recruiting had its ups, and downs. Class act, wish him all the happiness in retirement

I think he should buy SH season tickets to sit right behind Fred Hill all season....the guy who helped screw him.

What the heck are you talking about? Waters willingly hired hill to his staff . Find me a news report stating otherwise.

Waters was a good man . A good college basketball coach. He was not a good big east basketball coach . He flat out refused to win conference road games , even when a win in 2004 may have made the tournament. That was the Ricky shields box out game at Virginia tech. The record shows that he was a bad big east coach.
I wish him the best in retirement. He was better than rice and hill, who he put on staff. Bannon had more success than him since Bannon got on the NCAA bubble on selection Sunday .

I always thought Waters was a good man, an average coach, and a bad recruiter. Not counting Pikeill, who looks good right now, I don't think we've had a good coach since Tom Young...lots of "averages" and three of the worst...Jordan, Hill, Littlepage.

Agree with this . But you have to give Wenzel credit for what he accomplished early in his tenure. If Craig carter doesn't have that moment in Atlanta who knows what would have happened.

I give credit to Littlepage in that he found his niche as an AD.

I know three Nit bids in five years wasn't what we were looking for. But he did a helluva lot better than the three clowns that succeeded him!
---
this was a time when the NIT would take a RU or a SHU with a .500 record....the old administration of the NIT wanted a local team to make it to the garden for the quarterfinals, if possible, going as far as having us play a few patsies at home, hoping we would win and get there

.... when we played Michigan there was close to a full house....todays NIT could be two western teams, and the crowds disappointing, but I guess that is what they want.

anyway, I would not be too impressed with the making the NIT stat

I was a RU fan at the time of Waters also, and I believe he never would have gotten us over the hump, or, into the top half of the big east...He just could not bring in enough talent, more specifically, northeastern talent....Douby being the exception....

we could not win road games in the big east.... the firing came at the right time, but the replacement was terrible.

look at our big east record, not the bloated final win totals.... the one year we had 20 wins included 3 at home NIT wins against weaker..... in reality we won 16 games

I just appreciate Coach Waters as a truly gifted coach and person. Always a positive attitude plus he always visited our football tailgates and was always a cool guy. Didn't drink though...

He was OK. horrible recruiter. I'd vote Wenzel over him as far as best coach in last 30 years.

Just because he was better then Hill, Rice and Jordan doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision to replace him. He did not deserve to get replaced in the manner it was handled though.

Very good man, great defensive/rebounding coach, average offensive coach, below average recruiter. Like Pikiell, gets a lot out of average talent. A LOT of credit goes out to guys like Coach D, Mance, and Carr.

It was 1000% the right decision. We were not going to take the next step without better recruiting. Ideally Hill would stay as a lead assistant. That fell apart quick, they gambled, and they lost. So be it. But being so close to the hump, we needed something extra to get to the NCAAs. It was the right move.

I always wondered if RU MBB would have become a good program, if Waters wasn't pushed out and Hill stayed as an assistant.
I thought Gary was a good coach, but a poor recruiter and Hill's recruiting might have got the players Gary could use to make RU a constant dance team.
On the recruiting front, Waters couldn't bring in the type of players that would be a winning program. But if he had them, I think he could have made RU a constant Tourney team.

Congrats to Coach Waters. He was an excellent in game coach, but recruiting was his one negative. "Watersgate" didn't help. I loved rooting for him though and he represented our university well.

When I was a freshman Coleman and shields were bombing threes and the RAC was rocking under Waters. It's gone downHILL since.

Although I will say I saw Rutgers blow about a 20 point lead against Syracuse bc they couldn't break a full court press and almost had a stroke under Waters as well
