Also not entirely sure why McGee would jump ship at Louisville in the middle of spring ball unless Lovie is ready to throw a LOT of money at him.
IMO, the commitment to Lovie must have included the resources to succeed.
Also possible the two know each other and want the chance to work together.
Lovie has $4,000,000 to use to fill his staff. That is the third most in the league behind Michigan and Ohio State.
Not sure McGee will leave Louisville. He is making $850,000 and is assistant head coach. He turned down a move to Oklahoma last year. Lovie will likely offer him $1,000,000+, though.
Mike Sherman and Jeff Telford are other names being thrown out there.
Maybe Illinois could use some of those millions to pay off the law suits filed against them.

Not really meaning to open up old wounds, but is McGee > McCall? I recall some frustrations with McGee because he tended to be one-dimensional when he was our OC. I haven't really paid close attention to his offenses since he left NU but I would assume he has improved a lot.
Come on Combes, I would think that you have more class then that. Wheeler died from a disease that he had for a long while. Down in Champaign both your football program and women's basketball all under investigation for sexual harassment and abuse, kind of a totally different set of circumstances. You have been hiding for well over a year now because of the Illinois dysfunctional athletic programs and now make a re-appearance to post this crap. Get lost.
He wasn't when he was at NU, but he's been around the block some since. One thing's for damn sure. Louisville's O was FAR MORE effective than ours last years. So, I don't think it's a stretch to make the argument.
Exactly. This guy disappears when Illinois has a ton of problems for a year and then at just the slightest glimmer of hope he's back at full force. I know some posters on here have liked the information he posted in the past but I have always seen him as a troll who is passive aggressive and always finds a way to undervalue everything NU and overvalue everything UofI.
In fairness to McGee, he was just named OC right after Walker's passing, and he certainly wasn't getting any offensive mentoring from Fitz in 2006. Since then, he did time as a head coach and has been coaching under Bobby Petrino, so his moral compass may not be stronger, but his offensive instincts are almost certainly sharper.
I am pretty sure Wheeler's remains are buried in a cemetery in California. God rest his soul.

Seriously, I think Willy is confusing the racial harassment accusations, (which an investigation found no significant evidence for beyond the plaintiffs complaints) with sexual harassment.

Todd Grantham is a pretty damn good coach, but hard to take too many guys over Hank right now.
Illinois the only program with an African American head coach and both coordinators. It will be interesting to see if recruiting picks up - not just because the staff is African American, but they are reputable, quality coaches too. Great hire by Illinois IMO
I have been following both boards of NU and Illinois since the Lovie announcement with many questioning his recruiting success. The current ratio of black head coaches is 9.3% . Meanwhile, the number of African-American players in FBS is at its highest point in at least a quarter-century, 53 percent. (The United States' African-American population is approximately 13 percent.) Let that soak in for a while.
We have two black Head Coaches in Sumlin and Strong leading the largest state institutions down here in Texas. They may not get every recruit that’s targeted but I can assure you that the parents of the black recruits of interest are definitely taking their calls. At the end of the day, coaches have to win to keep their jobs but I would not underestimate the optics of this move and the impact on the African American community.

Yep. I agree 100%! All you can do is ask for the opportunity and when you get it, you better deliver. If not, the next opportunity may never come again.
This is kind of a stupid...I don't think Combes is not admitting Illinois has been a cesspool of bad behavior this past couple of years. They fired the coach, the AD and it is well documented they treated athletes in multiple sports with disregard. Racial and sexual charges aside, they have been a mess.
They did not clean house because NU fans have been unduly picking on them, they finally stopped closing their eyes and started to clean house. Good for them. The real question is will the new administration take a different tack, stay away from some of the talented but questionable kids, and try and rebuild in a way that makes Illinois proud. Time will tell...
