So much angst tonight in the game thread and it changed in the blink of an eye. A closing 17-4 run over the final 6 minutes where RU held Cuse without a fg while turning up the defense and making Cuse pay in transition is something that will be celebrated. What RU did tonight in this win, in the way they did it was the epitome of succeeding in their gut check moment. RU had dominated the first half but only had a 4 point lead. Still as they meandered in the 2nd half, they still were able to keep a 4-6 point cushion on Cuse until it looked like this team was ready to pack it in for the night. Down 65-62 and absolutely showing little resolve to play defense, Pikiell seemingly at a lost with some odd lineups all of a sudden we saw this team sparked by Jacob Young all come together.

Young on defense and then in transition was poisonous to Syracuse's chances late. His speed in bringing the ball up kept Cuse out of their defense and allowed RU to spread the ball around. Make no mistake about it everyone contributed in those final minutes...the core of the team..Myles, Mathis and Harper all were fire late on the offensive end. Some beautiful passing and awareness. They finished. They hit foul shots. They defended. They rebounded. They won. More important. This was Rutgers basketball as Pike had envisioned. RU saved the best for last and proved they were men of mettle. RU could have lost this game and with it the cries of overrated and not ready for primetime would certainly be shouted. But they did not win, in a game where everything looked south and without their star and leader. This bunch realized what they needed to do. Its frustrating for us as fans to watch what we saw at times earlier in the 2nd half because we know when this team can get down to business, its quite a thing of beauty to watch. If RU can just bottle these last 6 minutes. Watch this film. Watch how to show them what a success story they are. Its a game like this that makes me a pollyanna. I needed to see the resolve. I like the pluck of this team. Winning an important game with Geo. That means something.

Individually, we are seeing the blossoming of a real star here in Ron Harper Jr. We saw some big games from Ron last year but now its almost expected and he is putting up just sweet numbers....9-13 tonight, 5-8 from 3, 7 boards, 26 points...all Big 10 type numbers. Mathis 19 points, 7 boards, what I like this year is that the thing that has limited his game in the past was cutting back on those unforced errors, I feel like this year, those errors are becoming less and less. I always say when Mathis lets the game come to him he is at his best. JY 18 points and a phenomenal 10 assists. A slow start, yes 5 turnovers but ultimately got better as the game persisted. A total game changer on both ends tonight. Myles...I am hard on Myles because at times I feel he makes a lot of frustration fouls or missed bunnies. I know he can do better. He came to alive later in the game. I think he hit 5 of his last 6 shots including a free throw to finish with 11 and 12 boards . Myles needs to be that extra leader out there. Good to see him bounce back as the game wore on. I thought Cliff was solid...6 minutes, 2 blocks. Its really all we can ask from right now. Now problem with what Ive seen. Paul looked good early but then went south and 4 turnovers, I would have liked to see a better game from him tonight and better decision making with the ball. Palmquist couldnt hit the broad side of the barn but at least made a couple of defensive plays. Mag looked lost and Reiber not ready to be on the court.

Rollercoaster of emotions in the game thread of course. We come in with expectations this year. Our fans do not have to apologize for demanding wins. RU should have beaten Syracuse tonight. RU is better and Cuse is not there yet. Cuse I felt was a little looser in this game than RU and RU seemed to forget that games are not handed to you. You have to make plays to win them. Use the guys that got you there...Ron, Myles, Tez, JY. I think Pike may have learned some stuff tonight, lineup was a bit scary at times. He is in a tough spot with the depth issues but Im always in a believer of you win with your best lineups especially if you are struggling.

Obviously all of this came with our best players in. Unfortunately we are in a spot where there is a big drop off after our top 5 and Cliff....in fact is enormous. Getting Geo back healthy and in the lineup will hide alot of the bench issues. Gives us 7 solid in the rotation and guys like Mag and Palmquist can do spot time in roles they can handle. Right now they were asked to play bigger roles tonight and they floundered and the rest of the team just went of sync. The margin of error for this Rutgers team isnt great past the top 7 but we saw tonight that yes they can gut through. We really are missing Caleb this year. Hopefully Mag can give us a little more but tonight was tough for him. Depth will dog this team all year, not sure how we got in this spot but recruiting was a little thin for this year IMO since most schools do bring in some guys who offensively are ready to contribute right away. Cliff is pretty solid for just getting his feet wet but offensively isnt an option. Somewhere we need a guy to play that role to come in for 8-10 minutes a game and contribute 5-6 points.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that Geo is back for Maryland. This team has the potential for some special moments on the banks and tonight was a crucial and necessary kind of test that RU passed. I like this team's pluck.

I don’t know if Geo is back for Maryland or if so it ll be for a few minutes. I saw video of him shooting and he does not seem to be mobile as of yet though his shot looked good.
I’m concerned about our depth as we need more from the freshmen and it’s rough for them to get better when every game from here on on will be a dogfight.

I think there will be games where Pike might have to do a circus act with the lineup but tonight was a good juggle in the end

Great recap again Bac. "Justin" Young was really the key. Just busting your chops. Another solid review of the game.

Best of Luck,

I don't see depth as a major concern once Geo is back. He eats up a lot more minutes and reduces the minutes/role of Mag/Palm while still leaving room for them to get some minutes. Reiber with brief appearances if needed as the 3rd big.

The majority of minutes and offense should be running through Young Geo Harper Mathis Myles. Minor minutes for freshman in supporting roles for Mag and Palmquist is healthy for the program.

Its unfortunate the freshman didn't get scrimmages and more OOC games to further their development prior to B1G play

Good win. I am concerned though that 65-62 deficits with less than 6:00 to go in B1G games aren’t overcome, especially without the RAC on our side. If we play sloppy, don’t shoot well, don’t defend, the majority of our B1G opponents won’t be as forgiving as Cuse was.

We need something out of palmquist. He has been on campus since last spring and is already like 21 I think. Just need a couple 3s and a solid 8 minutes or so.

So evident that losing CM hurt most as he is another ball handler - and when Pike subbed in the frosh that gap was clear.

Given how well the offense ran through JY - will be curious how/if the starting 5 will change.

Agree . But a a win is a win . This was a game that didn’t need to be pretty . Just needed to find a way to get the win . Mission accomplished

We need something out of palmquist. He has been on campus since last spring and is already like 21 I think. Just need a couple 3s and a solid 8 minutes or so.

I harken back to Harper’s freshman year when he shot just 3 for 24 from three point range in the first part of the schedule, and then the light went on in early January and he started hitting them at a 36-38% clip.

It’s a confidence thing with Oskar. Once he hits a few, I think (hope) the success will feed on itself and he can become more consistent.

Was worried when we went down 3 with minutes to play. Thought we lost this due to the non RAC crowd. But as we saw last year this team came back and fought hard for the win. I give them more credit this game.

As suspected we were the better team. Didn't play great on offense, but that zone gives people fits.

RHJ has really raised his game this year.

Yes we miss Akwasi a lot. But I'm glad BAC mentioned Caleb because we do miss his presence on the court.. He'd make key rebounds , often hit a timely three and played tough defense in addition to handling the ball. This was a weird game because Rutgers thoroughly dominated Syracuse in the first half but only led by four. In the first half Rutgers defense was excellent , they rebounded but ( with exception of Harper) couldn't hit anything beyond layups. If Rutgers could shoot they would have led by 20 points at the half. And for about 14 minutes in the second half Rutgers looked lost on defense and their offense was out of sorts and disjointed. I have to give Boeheim credit--his adjustments in the second half befuddled Rutgers as they packed the box on defense and looked smooth on offense. It's obviously good they beat Syracuse but make no mistake --this was not an impressive Syracuse team. Rutgers cannot afford second halves like last night when the Big Ten season starts. The league is just too good......

No one mentioned we saw Cliff and Myles playing together for a stretch
True, and Pike played Cliff, Mag, and Oscar together for a stretch as well. Coach was trying different combinations. Playing Dean at the 5 might have been done in case Cliff and Myles together works out, but one of them gets in foul trouble. Dean, on offense at the 5, can pull the opposing center out of the middle, which Duke can't do. Just another option that Coach was trying out. Defensively, Myles and Cliff together can cause problems for other teams. Need all options in the B10.

Putting Reiber in the game at that spot instead of Duke tells me we don't have a 3rd string center.

I wonder if watching what happened might make Pike consider extending Cliff to 3 fouls in the 1st half. If push comes to shove and they both foul out Ron harper is your center in crunch time.

Should have been up at least 8 at the half. I knew Cuse was going to make that last shot.

I was surprised it wasn't Duke over Reiber for that last minute of the first half. Reiber looked lost last night but looked much more like he belonged on the floor in the first three games. He'll improve.

I thought Mag moved well on defense in the first half but he made a couple of bad passes on O for easy turnovers. Long term, no concern on my part but he's not likely to help much on O in the next few weeks.

Oscar... I think it is a confidence thing. Small sample size, but when you miss your first coupe of shots and you get limited minutes, I can imagine he tightened up and that makes it harder to just play. I hope he comes around and expect he will have at least two games where he hits some 3s for us and makes a difference.

Myles is doing a much better job of avoiding silly fouls. I did not like the reach-in foul he committed on the perimeter but other than that, he played great D. If he finished better near the rim in the first half (and he was not the only one who struggled in that area), we could've romped.

Key point of the game: we are up 10 with 1:30 in the first half when Myles is called for his second foul and goes to the bench. Then we let SU score six straight to cut the margin to four at the break. If Myles does not get that foul and stays in the game, I bet we are up 10+ at the break.

I like that we were tested and had to respond to get the win. Mental toughness was HUGE down the stretch.

On to Maryland!

Syracuse, because of their zone, is also such a unique team to play when you're not used to seeing them. When you can overcome being put in the odd positions they put you in and show mettle I count it as a win. For those who follow the women's team, it's like when they would play Villanova back in the Big East days--a game you just have to gut your way through.
