Just a few days ago I had this team's performance as dreadful and it was and today I would rate wonderful and it is. The Maryland peformance was arguably the worst game all around from coaches and players in the Pike era. The Ohio State game is arguably the best win...actually I think it is even though SHU was ranked one spot higher. It is certainly the most important win. The timing of this win after a horrid month of basketball and the way victory was acheived is ENORMOUS. I have been saying the last several weeks in my posts that the coaching staff was having trouble with getting the right lineup and trying to adjust to the lack of production from certain players. Where was the season going to head after a month of bad basketball? Would this team be able to shake off Maryland and be resilient? Would they even have enough talent to even win a game like this? I think they were facing a crossroads of sorts and damn did they calm alot of fears tonight and reinvigorate the hope in this program. Tonight we needed this.

RISKING FAILURE TO REAP REWARD, OFF GO THE DIAPERS

Taken from C Vivian Stringer talking to her team after knocking off #1 Notre Dame in the "This is a Game Ladies" doc. Pike and staff finally made their move. Harper put into the lineup along with Mathis for his 2nd straight start. Kiss out of the starting lineup. The shakeup had to happen. Coaches generally like to play it safe. The coaching staff this year played it safe for much of this season deferring to the players expected to be third and fourth options and thus bringing along the talented freshmen slowly. Tonight Pike took the bold move and let the chips fall where they may......and when Eugene went down these freshmen would be counted on even more. They were not just complimentary players to Eugene and Geo anymore, Montez and Ron and Shaq Carter became key cogs in the offense and had the green light to do what they needed to. During that second half blitz where RU went from 40-38 down to 55-45 up, it was the freshmen and Carter who did it all....BABIES PLAYING IN DIAPERS DOMINATING THE #16 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY outscoring them 17-5. Kudos to Pikiell for having the faith in them to call on them and kudos to these players for taking that call and answering it. And Montez well he answered it.

RU looked dead in the water on offense being outscored 16-3 and found themselves trailing 61-58...and then what happened. Montez with such confidence on back to back possession just drove into the paint for the two hugest buckets on his and quite possibly this program under Pikiell. He is just a baby, a freshmen, he was never in this position in big time college ball before. The baby shed his diapers and grew up into a man tonight. Montez the man....7-11 shooting, 4 boards, only one turnover and some really good defense. Montez answered the call and then some. I am not putting any expectations on him going forward but these are the kind of breakout performances that should quadruple his confidence level going forward and make other teams respect his ability.

Ron Harper Jr....shooting line not pretty at 3-13/2-7 from 3, but 4-5 ft and 0 turnovers key for 12 points. He kept plugging away. Harper counted upon for way more minutes and production with Kiss not playing. Harper answered his call as well with 29 minutes. You can see the talent there, one of these nights Harper is going to have a Mathis type game. Shaq Carter...whoa....31 freaking minutes...are you kidding me. With Eugene out, it was the other Shaq who picked up the slack in a big way. Carter played some great D and super stat line of 11 pts, 7 boards and 5-6 at the FT line...Cannot say enough about his perseverance and his hard work to seemingly get of a doghouse early in the season where he didnt even play more than a minute to become a key cog logging 31 minutes. Kudos to him and the coaching staff for pushing the right buttons and trusting him to perform.

Mc Connell, Doorson, Thiam , Johnson all contributed even if the stats lines do not say it. Providing minutes and doing their roles, while playing tough defense and not hurting the team. Doorson had a few sweet blocks. This was truly a team win...wait I missing one guy well a few.

Eugene...havent heard any reports of his injury so cannot comment on that. Although he had only taken one shot in the 7 minutes he played.

Kiss total DNP, again have not heard any reports as if this writing as to why

oh and lets not forget....Geo Baker. Baker was much maligned after the last game and yes his play has taken a turn for the worst the last 4 or 5. This kid is a baller, just going through a tough stretch and as I said, he is just a sophomore, I think fans expect him to be Corey Sanders at his best every night. Tonight Baker just went in and shut up all his critics. He literally willed the team to that big 11 point lead in the first half with 13 points and while in the 2nd half, Geo seemed to be keyed on and only took 3 shots before his game icing shot with the shot clock running down. Geo with the ball at the end of the game, being confident and risking failure to reap reward, his patent step back shot we fell in love with vs Purude. Geo was money. RU was up 64-61 and only needed to stave off the 3 point shot to hold sway. Not at all worried about this kid going forward...and the better the freshmen play, the more you will see Geo continue to make big time plays.

You have to make plays to win. This team made plays. Usually its the other team making the plays. Ohio State is a very very good team. They move the ball well, they can kill you from 3 and they play tough defense. Rutgers beat a very good team tonight and it wasnt because OSU played bad. It was because RU made the plays to win. It helps when you make baskets. A shoutout to the defensive performance of RU tonight..best of the season and maybe one of the best Ive seen from Pike...that zone d worked tonight but this team worked hard for its stops especially in the first half where the tone was set.

Who would have thought that RU would survive two seperate 7 minute droughts without a fg...one after being up 30-19 that lasted about 7 minutes spanning two halves where they were outscored 13-1 and then late in the game where that 55-45 was erased on a 16-3 OSU run. RU fans had seen this movie before...that a team without one of their key cogs in Eugene, composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores would find a way to keep fighting and close this one out is so remarkable. RU deserved this one. They looked like the better team. This wasnt some fluke win at the end. While OSU is still more talented and probably IS the better team over the course of a season, tonight that didnt matter.

FILLING UP THE LOVE TANK FOR THE FANS

I was frustrated by the last month. I think many on the board were as well. It was just a lot of bad basketball and while I thought individually some players were showing improvement it was as if the team was not improving. Some of us had increasing negativity creeping in despite the fact that everyone supports Pikiell. Its understandable if you have been a Rutgers fan for the last 3 decades you need to get some love every now and them. This win over the the #16 ranked team in the nation is going to go along way to keeping that love tank filled for the rest of the year. We desperately needed this. We needed the reminder that is a process and an up and down rollcoaster but we were thirsty for this win. RAC did a great job tonight especially late and it was so great to see the students storm the court for this teams effort. Yes we need more student support and we need more support in general at the RAC as attendance of 5379 isnt all that great for a program the stature of OSU. It seems as if when the fans have shown this year, the team hasnt been able to pull the win. Tonight that small faithful group got rewarded.

Where do we go from here....well that is for other threads. Easy on the expectations for this team especially with Eugene injury but tonight shows we can win against anyone at the RAC (maybe not Michigan) and the dire predictions of 2 league wins may be premature.

Good post Bac and agree on all points. There were some great moments when, as you said, we made plays and you named a few good ones. For me the play that sticks in my head, and was indicative of the energy the young guys bring, was when Harper brought the ball up on a runout and found Mathis for an alley-oop slam. Doesn’t get much better than that. Lots to look forward to this year and beyond...

Good writeup as usual, bac.

When was the last time RU closed out a game on a 6-0 run to come from behind and win, let alone against a top 20 team?

Man did this team, and this fanbase, need this.

thanks...like never...haha...I think we closed out against Miami on the road....and last year vs Indiana at MSG but not since SHU last year...and remember we are like an entirely different team from last year

@bac2therac great analysis as usual.

One thing that you said that really can’t be understated is we won because we we’re the better team last night. Not because OSU had a bad night or we got breaks. We went toe to toe and made more plays to win.

This was a great win because it was a grind out game where Rutgers withstood Ohio State offensive spurts .The game was won with clutch shots at critical times including foul shots. The defense held Ohio State to 61 points which included using zone defense to neutralize their inside scoring and offensive rebounding.

Rutgers dominated for at least 30 minutes of the game as different players contributed points. At the same time Rutgers must have missed at least 7 dunks/layups that would have widened the point spread and not resulted in the game going down to the last Ohio State shot to tie the game.Even though the crowd was only around 5400,.the fans certainly impacted the game by boisterous cheering/booing which gave the team the extra boost of energy to withstand pressure and make enough good plays to upset the 16th ranked team.

I hate to bring this up considering the reason eugene didnt play was due to injury. So first and foremost, prayers and hope hes okay.

But the offense just had a lot more flow tonight, alot more ball movement, and the ball rarely got “stuck”. If shaq C, shaq D, of myles caught it in the post they either kicked it or went right to work when they were DEEP in the post, not from the wing like eugene. Shaq C earned the right tonight to play major minutes the rest of the way. That kid is just a work horse who can reallllly finish well around the rim, hes so damn smooth down low. Hes also a pretty good rebounder, foul shooter, pick setter, etc. id argue shaq C is our best big man imo.

We lost three major parts from last year.’s team and before last night that had really been showing. Last night we got nothing from key returnees, Issa and Gene, and tok down OSU. After our last month of ball, who knows how much to make of one game.

Still, time to enjoy our view guys, all of whom have upside (some a lot of upside). Not sure who’s surprised others the most, compared to very early season impressions, but for me it’s Shaq C who looked like (in absence) he might be little more than a mop up guy, and even more so Caleb who has quickly grown from deer in the headlights to a confident key contributor.

Lots of great things came from last night that BAC & crew have already pointed out, but one additional thing I would like to mention was the style of offense.

The team did not just settle for a late in the shot clock jumper, but rather took to heart the notion of driving. It led to 20FT attempts in which we knocked down 75% (kudos on that aspect as we all know the woes of FT shooting in recent seasons). Guys seem more confident at the line the last few games which will help. Yes not all the drives were falling, but we need to stay aggressive. Additionally for the most part the pace of the offense was not out of control, they looked to push when the situation dictated itself (off long rebounds, loose balls, etc.) & it paid off with transition points. That cannot be understated as we know we will struggle to shoot so getting those fast break points or foul shots off it will be key.

Okay maybe a 2nd thing, loved the zone defense & the mixing between that & man to man. It was perfect to neutralize as best as possible Wessin in the paint & did not force Doorson & Johnson to bang with him each trip down, especially after EO got hurt. Comfort in the zone will help this team as I thought it was pretty effective overall.

Great win last night for the kids, the programs & the loyal fans who continue to turn out! We all can soak this one in for the next day or so before its on to Minny.

Let me also say this, the younger guy and his dad who sat near me in 113 row B. You guys are legends. They walked over to me and told me stop calling ohio state coach chris holtmann “coach” and start calling him “chrissy” and also educated me on his wifes name. I never used his wifes name because even i have boundarys but you guys are legends haha

His game really reminds me of one game f those NBA dirty work PFs from two generations ago, not overly “anything,” tough, good instincts, nice around glass.

I absolutely love the zone aspect of our D, but think we’ve got a lot more work to do to get our rotations and responsibilities down. Thought while in it we were very vulnerable to swing and cross court passes as well as flooded zones.

Going to tack my thoughts on here.......

This was NOT a fool's gold win. We didn't shoot lights out and/or our opponent wasn't ice cold. We have had fool's gold performances in the past where we look better than we are because we knock down more shots than normal.

Some math and thoughts.....
1. 62 possessions in the game so both teams were right on the dot with the 64-61 final.
2. Scoring very balanced 4 in double digits (remember we only score 64)
3. Bigs 73 minutes (eo,sd,sc,mj) 19 points 6-12 FG 7-10 FT
4. Kaleb Wesson had 8 fouls, but was able to finish the game
5. If Issa and Kiss aren't going to be relevant offensively (not my base case thinking) we need to keep MORE of an eye on FT% and turnovers. If we lose the variability of 3 point shooting knocking down 3s and taking care of the basketball is at even more of a premium.
6. Last night shows how important shot blocking is. Take nothing away from Mathis, but his 2 baskets probably both don't go in if OSU has a shot blocker. We have 5s that are shot blockers. When Shaq D does nothing on the offensive end (and not making left handed sky hooks) don't forget his importance as a shot blocker
7. The low post is a great place to have the basketball. We converted from the low post and at times passed out of it and got open looks that........WE MISSED. If there are 65 possessions in a given game we need to strive for at least 30 low post entries
8. Certain guys (Harper and Mathis) got the memo to push tempo.
9. I thought Luther Muhammed was the best player on the court and a guy I'd love to have. He locked down Geo Baker, he knocked down some shots, and he looks like a good teammate. I liked when the quiet Wesson passed to no one in a big spot and Muhammed and others laughed it off and made him feel better. That stuff goes a long way.
10. Change to zone after the timeout with about 2 minutes to go was a gamesaver. They went possession after possession to K wesson and that was the only way to shut it down.
11. Good move Pike taking Shaq D out going with Issa knowing we were playing man with 10 seconds left and OSU needing a 3.
12. Pike got calls by being on refs non stop all game and ditching Mr. Nice guy (which i respect). I think this and sitting Kiss sent a message to the team that this game was urgent.
13. Montez Mathis...enough said

FORGOT ONE
14. Guards have to help out rebounding, especially when we play zone. Too many times last night we had Doorson boxed Wesson out and no one else went in and grabbed the rebound. Mathis possibly biggest play of the game was the defensive rebound we ended up getting late were he tipped it to another player

Good summary BAC . The team , the coach, the freshman and first year players and this small diehard fan base desperately needed this effort and this win over a ranked opponent. We stay above 0-4 Penn State and Illinois and 8-6 , 1-3, seems so much better than 7-7, 0-4.

Going back to my post after the disappointing Maryland game, I thought Pike was struggling with trying to figure out his lineup and the 15-25 points he was expecting from Issa and Kiss had disappeared along with Geo’s 13-16 points after his early sophomore slump. I thought the offense had to play inside /out and Carter and Doorson and Johnson, besides Eugene had to get touches and look to score. If doubled , then the kick out for three or the hockey assist would give our guys better shots and hopefully knock them down. I also thought Geo and Eugene were doing too much and the freshman and the big guys had to score more. Caleb has to play more at the point and Geo had to be rested more. Eugene’s injury is a dame shame as he is one tough courageous kid, but it almost forced Coach to play Carter a lot and make him the focal point of our inside game to where he was drawing double teams. He is clearly our best low post scorer but both Doorson and Johnson should be given the ball as well.

I also thought his rotation had to be tightened and he benched Kiss and limited Issa’s Minutes off the bench. Montez and Harper given the starts and now we watch them grow. Montez has incredibly gotten better every game and I love his aggressiveness taking it from rebound to the hole. 2 huge shots late as well as the will to take those shots. We have not had a freshman willing to take the key shots down the stretch in a long time. The kid’s talent and athleticism are in full display as he will continue to get better.

Harper got in a rhythm a bit and I also love his getting a rebound and / or a steal and pushing it upcourt, whether it was the alley -oop to Montez or the and one Drive. Even his missed threes looked good like they were going in. Once his body and conditioning round into shape , he will be an absolute stud. I also thought Coach has to push the pace and let them run in transition. Last night, it was clear that we must have runouts whenever possible.

Caleb should be playing more and Pike once Eugene went down , relied heavily on Geo but it was obvious in the second half that Geo needed more rest. Kudos to Geo for hitting that big shot with 10 seconds to increase the lead to three but with more rest , playing more 2 guard than point, he will be even more efffective. Geo abused Jackson in the first half and got whatever shot he wanted and they were going down, but once Mohammed was switched to him, he really had to overwork and needed more rest. Caleb is capable of running the team with Mathis and Harper also handling the Rock upcourt and Coach has to trust his freshman.

I mentioned the other day , I thought our freshman and Shaq Carter were really good Big 10 first year players . I meant it. Other than Maryland or Indiana’s freshman , our guys are right there. Greene I guess was questioning that thought. Hopefully Greene and the rest of this diehard fan base appreciates this freshman class and hopefully Coach gets that wing scorer, shooter, or 4 man like the Massoud kid and then next year’s crew will build on what these freshman are starting. The Big 10 is a war every night. Along with the ACC and the SEC , these are the best three , deepest conferences and you must bring your full effort every night. Glad we brought it last night and hopefully gives us momentum going to Minnesota and Purdue .

It's been mentioned a couple of times in this thread, but I thought Pike's decision to go much more heavily with a 2-3 zone was key. We hadn't really used it much all year, and he pulled it out of his pocket against a team that struggled against Cuse's zone earlier this year.

With all of our tape in man, I really don't think OSU's coaching staff spent much game prep time on zone busting, and it showed. Kudos for clearly working on the concept during our extended practice periods the last month - it definitely paid off in a big game. This also gives other teams more to consider when prepping for us, and extra tools in the kit to throw out with more confidence to vary the looks we give other teams.

Kudos to the staff for making it work tonight, and I'd expect to see more of it going forward with our length (and I'd expect to the Buckeyes to see a lot more of it, too, until they can show they can beat it).

Huge win. HUGE. A big bump that the program needed to qwell the fears those like myself who was skeptical from early on and many others who were starting to lean that way.

Where will Ohio St be at the end of the year? I’m not so sure. But it will only be remembered as ranked win at home by causal fans and recruits. The more we win big games at home the better we will be for it.

Shout out to Pike for his willingness to make changes. Signs of a good coach. Makes to much sense for us not to switch to zone from time to time. An important DNP.

And hey, shout out to the kids for making some shots and knocking down the freebies!

The OSU coach basically admitted as much in his press conference. If you haven't watched it go back and watch it, it's only about 2.5 mins. He basically says he was surprised by how much zone RU threw at them and his team wasn't prepared for it. That comes down to coaching and is a great job by Pike.

I do think RU lucked out a little bit, I don't think OSU shot as well as they usually do, which is a credit to the RU defense, but also a little bit of luck which was much needed and welcomed. It was a great game to watch and I'm totally pumped with the win!

One other thing that Pike said in his press conference midway through - "I'm still learning my team..." which I think explains a lot about the inconsistency and some of the rotations he's been working with so far this year. Clearly Pike is still trying to fit a bunch of new pieces together to get the best out of the group.

I am sorry, but if your game plan is to pound the ball inside to your stud 6'10'' immovable object how can you not think you will see a switch to zone for at least some possessions.

Nice post. It appeared you were losing faith in these guys the past few weeks. Glad to see you realized that sentiment was premature.

It was nice to see the Lax team there supporting them
It’s one thing I’ve noticed, especially since Pat came aboard. The athletic programs are more closely united. It’s a little more challenging for RU because our facilities are so spread out, but they make it happen through various events and gatherings.

I am sure a number of guys on the lax team played hoops. There are a lot of conceptual similarities between the two sports.

It's a fair point. You also have to consider that OSU game prepped for a certain look from RU which would rely heavily on Eugene and they also prepared for Kiss. With both two not playing all credit goes to RU players for stepping up as OSU coaches and staff couldn't adjust to what RU was doing.

When you're not a good 3 point shooting team, you have to get the ball in the paint and push the ball when given opportunities. These two things happened last night. Carter did great work down low and Mathis & Harper really surprised by increasing the tempo. Even the announcers were caught offguard by this.

Seriously, who among us didn't say, here we go again, when OSU went on their late 16-3 run to go up 61-58.
At least on this night, not the case. Mathis would not let us lose.

Would love to have seen that play. It defines B1G time BB..

I absolutely love the zone aspect of our D, but think we’ve got a lot more work to do to get our rotations and responsibilities down. Thought while in it we were very vulnerable to swing and cross court passes as well as flooded zones.

Agreed by no means is it to the level of our man to man D that is our primary defense formation but to see them execute it effectively for the most part was a big part of the win. Forced OSU into some deeper late 3s in the shot clock. This is beneficial with teams who have a low post threat like OSU does. I think we might see more of it against Minnesota given they are to date shooting the 3 as well as we do. Staying on your feet & not falling for the shot fake was good on our part. Have to rebound out of it when we do to avoid 2nd chance points.

No. If that is Phase 1 Phase 2 needs slight upgrades to all of them. Mathis could be the exception. Phase 3 is where you start landing the Top 100 guys that right now we are getting friendly interests.

We have recruited better... and now we need to recruit *even better*. As FIG said, this is the first phase... once we get these guys into upperclassmen roles, the wave behind them has to be still better and push them for time.

Nobody mentioning the real key to the game, 15 of 20 from the line! Harper actually had a poor shooting game but his free throw shooting was quite good.

Yup... 12 points on 13 shots isn't as bad as the FG% makes his day look.

Kudos to the staff for making it work tonight, and I'd expect to see more of it going forward with our length (and I'd expect to the Buckeyes to see a lot more of it, too, until they can show they can beat it).

this is a game where coaching and game prep mattered and Pike outcoached Holliman. Now that the cat is out of bag we will see how Minnesota and Purdue approach their gameprep for RU

I thought both the decision to play zone and to push tempo had to do in part with OSU looking like a slower team than some we have played this year.

The 1st 2 games of 90 and 95 points are what I call "fools gold".....Everybody scoring, hitting 3's, getting alley oops in transition etc....

The next 12 games are what I consider a big enough sample of what RU is trending towards.

We ask for more scoring or PPG and the goal is to get this group above 70PPG. Overall, if we include the 1st 2 games, RU is around 68 PPG on the season if I include the 1st 2 games.

RU only had 53 shot attempts and had 64 points. There were games like SHU where I think we had 85+ shot attempts and landed with only 66 points.

In the last 12 games (From St. John's forward, we are at 64PPG. but if I remove Miami and Boston University at 54 and 57 points from the 12 game stretch, we are at 66PPG.

I know it seems like splitting hairs, but it's very difficult to be at 70 to 72PPG, which is where most games in the B1G are going to require you to score most nights. Maybe make a couple of those missed dunks or knock down another 3 somewhere.

But there are reasons why I am very confident that next year will offer more competition for playing time and ultimately make the roster more efficient on offense to get that extra 5 to 6PPG against B1G competition.

We survived this game without Eugene and with 18 minutes with Thiam playing OK defense. If you are substituting those 18 minutes next year with Jacob Young or Paul Mulcahy, I'm very certain we will get offensive production out of those minutes. More assists, rebounds and points. This isn't to say Thiam's presence in the zone defense concept isn't important, it certainly was....and it's difficult to shoot over anyone with long arms at 6'9 to 6'10.

But if you add another option on the floor for those 18 to 20 minutes with a solid offensive threat that isn't going to hurt you defensively, RU immediately should go from 64 to 66PPG, to 70-71PPG next year OR, it happens Saturday if Issa or Kiss can get untracked..... I can see how big of an impact McConnell has when he's in the game, he's a threat to score, pass and can generate his own shot. Having two more threats next year off the dribble and spacing, is going to change how we look again next year.

So for the next few games or rest of season, the next step with Eugene likely out for I would guess a minimum of a couple of weeks (in a best case scenario), is how to spread those shot attempts out like last night, get Carter fouled 3 to 4 times a game and to allow him to stop opposing runs.....sometimes it's very difficult to have opponents get on 8-0 or 10-0 runs, if you feed to low block or make an effort to allow Carter to maneuver. ....let him get the FT attempts, make 1 or 2 and we avoid those extended droughts.

And Greene, many folks have watched Muhammad and he's a plus, PLUS defender and talented player. But in the context of how dominant or potentially dominant Jallow could be inside, those looks were WIDE open, with excellent ball-movement and spacing by Ohio State....many players should've knocked down those shots, and without Carter and Doorson leaning on Jallow, he could have had 25 to 27 or more.

If you take our offense from last night, 64 points on 62 possessions, and make them a constant and compare them to last year's defensive performances...

Minnesota 89 Rutgers 83 6-2 0-1
Rutgers 67 Michigan State 62 7-2 1-1
Purdue 82 Rutgers 75 11-5 1-2
Rutgers 63 Wisconsin 60 12-5 2-2
Rutgers 78 Michigan State 76 13-5 3-2 (there is a big time buzz in the program now)
Ohio State 68 Rutgers 63 13-6 3-3
Rutgers 70 Iowa 64 14-6 4-3
Rutgers 65 Michigan 62 15-6 5-3 (I am making NCAA plans)

Our offensive output has actually been somewhat consistent so far in B1G games:
1.05 PPP
1.02 PPP
0.88 PPP
1.03 PPP

Obviously it's a four-game sample but that Maryland game sticks out.

The defense has been quite poor however, about 0.04 points per possession worse than last season:
1.22 PPP
1.10
1.07
0.98

Of course we've played three of the top six offenses and four of the top 7 defenses and it's really the MSU gashing that skews the numbers.

If we finish around 0.98 points per possession offensively and 1.08 points per possession allowed defensively, that should be enough to keep us out of the basement.
