GA coach Taylor to A&M

Good question.
Reportedly Taylor is getting a big pay raise.
Not going to be easy at A&M, following a legend, etc. In terms of time, Chelsea has been an assistant long enough that she would be good to move along to a different situation. (Georgia may be looking elsewhere and will cut ties with anybody left over?)
Lots of coaching movement this year - retirements, firings, transfers.
Shauna Green (from Dayton) to Illinois, announced a couple days ago, will be interesting to see. amongst other changes.

The transfer portal for student athletes supposedly has many entries already, too.

Go RU!

Oh, I missed the Green to Illini move. Good pickup.

"Well, Joni's new contract extension one year ago included a $100,000 raise to $850,000. That's pretty good for someone who's never advanced to the Sweet 16. If A&M is paying her more than $1 million, they are foolish."

Wowww!!! Surprising!

I agree with the thought of top pay for Joni at this stage would be premature. She has done extremely well with UGA but was not able to get them back to the level of the Andy Landers days, which is what they probably expected.

She recruited well at UGA and now will have to go head to head with V. Schafer at Texas and also Baylor for Texas area recruits. I'm sure she'll still recruit the areas that she has always recruited, but I'm curious to see how it turns out at A&M.

I missed that Shauna Green to Illinois story also.

Also curious to see who get the spot at Florida St.

While terms have not yet been announced, Texas A&M is expected to increase Taylor’s compensation considerably. Taylor was just extended six years by UGA last year. Her new contract increased her salary $100,000 to $850,000 a year but increased incrementally to $925,000 in the final year, not including numerous performance bonuses. There have been recent boosts in pay across women’s basketball. South Carolina’s Dawn Staley recently received $2.9 million per season in a seven-year contract extension. According to a report by USA Today, at least 11 women’s basketball coaches have salaries over $1 million."

Chelsea Newton interview. Constant comments about Rutgers, and CVS. Good listen. Enjoy.

Thanks for posting this. It was nice to finally hear Chelsea speak after all this time watching her as a player and assistant coach. I think she will do well as a head coach. To be painfully honest.....I think she fits better in a program in the South. FSU would be a perfect fit for her if she was not taking over at UGA or following Joni to Texas.

Not sure. Mike Carey retired, Cynthia Cooper-Dyke retired, Charlie Turner Thorne, Nancy Fahey - a big year for retirement for sure.

Yes on the million dollar coaches. Adia got her million contract last off season; I think the only other one in the PAC is Tara, who makes a good deal more than that.

Wow..its likely a horrible move for Shauna and completely underscores the ineptitude right now with the women's hoop program. We easily could have had her

Illinois sports programs seems like a tough nut for coaches to crack, with the exception of mens basketball. Football and WBB has struggled to get traction for as long as I can remember. Grentz is the last to have "some" success for the women. It will be interesting to see if Green can get good players to choose the Illini.

Another name that is going to draw attention from larger schools is the Univ. of Texas-Arlington coach, Shereka Wright. A former WNBA player who played college ball at Purdue during some of their best days following Carolyn Peck's championship season.

Her team has done very well in her first two seasons coaching there.

UGA goes with the coach from Univ Central Florida, Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

Got our answer regarding Chelsea taking over that spot.

Wonder if Chelsea will be looking for another program and if a lower level HC position is in the cards .

If we are not able to go in a new direction at HC for the duration of CVS' contract, I think the following would be a worthwhile consideration:

It would be nice if Chelsea could come back to RU as interim coach replacing Tim on the staff. Let her get an audition over the rest of CVS' remaining time. Of course, CVS has to be on board with it and agree to go to that admin. role.

Chelsea wouldn't be coming into a total rebuild so it would be reasonable to expect that she put us solidly back in the Top 20, or maybe even Top 15, over the next few seasons. By the time CVS' contract is up, she should have top-level recruits here with more commiting and on the way. We should look like a potential Top 10 team.
If the expectations aren't met, we move on from the whole CVS crew, including Chelsea.

Of course, this idea becomes more attractive to Chelsea if she was to find it difficult to get a HC opportunity elsewhere that is to her liking. If HC is her desire, I would think that she is ready to get it going NOW! ...not later.

I doubt any current Assistant at another program , even with RU ties, or one looking for a job would take an interim role at a Program that doesn't know what direction it will take like RU's currently has.
Being interim hurts recruiting and a bad season as the interim RU WBB HC would destroy job prospects elsewhere and have the RU fan-base against permanent status if it became available.

Chelsea, to me, has more to lose than win if she came in as an interim HC.
Winning at a program that's not sure who the coach will be in 2 years will be hard to do and recruiting talent for the program woould be hard if they thought the coach was temporary would be replaced after the season is over .

Totally agree with your points that it is not in Chelsea's best interest. I was thinking along the lines of her being an assistant for so many years, at this point wanting to get her shot at HC. I also said "if" she is having problems getting serious consideration for a top spot, this idea may be tempting. If CVS agrees to go upstairs then it doesn't even have to be under an interim tag, right? And I thought CVS had 3 more years remaining. Three years is enough time to solidify recruiting. If you show well in the first year, recruits would feel comfortable coming. And she has plenty to work with already committed for the next few years.

It would definitely be Chelsea betting on herself. She would get the benefit of having CVS close, as a resource to consult with when necessary. Provided she doesn't bomb like Tim, ...if it didn't work out, she'd be right back where she is currently, .... a candidate for asst coach somewhere.

I'd rather see that than go through another year of Tim at the helm.

first of all , in the terms of Stringers LOA is (I believe) is a clause she doesn't have any involvement with the program while she's on it.
So advice should be ruled out along with any type of interaction with players and or coaches.

Also , I feel, if she can't come back for the 2022-23 season because of health reasons , Hobbs should tell Vivian to retire and move into an administrative position.
If that's not to Stringer's liking, Hobbs needs to bite the bullet and terminate her contract , even if have to pay it off in full.
The future of the program should come before loyalty to CVS and if C.Vivian Stringer can't do the job because of health concerns and won't give up the ghost, Hobbs must do what's best for RU WBB not CVS.

One year LOA understandable, 2nd year LOA should not be acceptable.

Right. That's why I said , if she agrees to go into the admn role, Chelsea doesn't have to be brought on under an interim tag. She could be given the HC position under a 3 year contract?? I don't know what the usual contract length is for new coaches and if 3 would be unusual.

Tell me what makes it a total rebuild.
The style of play here is no longer relevant. It’s dated and unappealing to young women.

We lost an entire year of evaluation and recruiting. We don’t know who may stay or go.

We have no recruiting base in the tri-state or anywhere for that matter. Please stop recruiting Alabama

We have zero ties to the high school coaching community in NJ.

Our fan base and future fan base has been eradicated. No one meaningful but us diehards care anymore.

This is a rebuild.

I can't say you're wrong in saying the style of play needs to be upgraded.
As for who may stay and who may go being an unknown factor.
Most programs have the same problem in my opinion, but with RU's coaching confusion, agree with it being a bigger problem then most programs.

Recruiting and tie ins I can't disagree and you aren't the only one I seen posting that.
I don't know so I'll take you at your word on the matter.

Losing fanbase probably is right because the old diehards are giving up and new fans harder to attract because the program lacks excitement for the casual fan to care about it.

But I don't think it's a total rebuild unless you're talking about restoring trust and getting new leadership.
Again thanks for giving your opinion, it was a good one as far as I'm concerned

Didn't know that is what constitutes a rebuild. If those things you laid out mean rebuild status, then we were in rebuild mode with last years' team with Diamond, Arella, TMack, Zippy, and all?? And the season before that?? and so on?

You're talking about rebuild in the context of what the next coach will inherit. Right?

The next coach walks into a practice/training facility that many think is the best in the country.

You have roster of 10 players (including the 2 McDonald AA candidates and 4 highly-recruited top 100 players, a JUCO player of the year, and former conf. player of the year in Lasha P).

The next coach has no barriers to recruiting this area. If they have the touch with recruiting, the talent is here.

A new coach will have their own coaching style. CVS' stlye(whether you like or don't like) has nothing to do with the next coach.

We have no way of knowing who has or hasn't evaluated who.

And whatever you feel a new coach would lose in recruiting, they can more conveniently make up with for with the portal.

What ya'll are saying, the way I read it, is that we need a whole new direction with the program (leadership and style wise). We all are in agreement when it comes to that.

When talking rebuild, ....What I'm saying is.....The cupboard is not bare. If you think it is, then we will just have to respectfully disagree.

Also.....The fact that we have five open spots on the roster is likely seen a plus for an incoming coach. It allows them to bring any players that want to follow them (whether it be HS recruits who may have reopened their recruiting after all the coaching changes or portal transfers).

Regarding comments about recruiting base, the answer is we don't know. We have a couple really well thought of recruits coming in, and have had some notable recruits, so . . .

I don't know who is doing what. In the day, Jolette led recruiting, then it was Carlene, I never really followed who was doing it after that. But for sure, Vivian was a deal-sealer, not a lead scout.

I will add that I'm not sure about it here in Arizona either, I actually think to some degree - at least more than usual - it is our head coach, Adia Barnes. But typically, it isn't.

Yes, this program has been on a downward trend for years. A bunch of fluff filled seasons with padded record won’t change reality. This program hasn’t been a threat to win a regular season crown. Hasn’t been close to a conf. tourney crown. Hasn’t sniffed a sweet 16 even with the recent talent. There is much more to this than swapping coaches.

Some of the problems we’re seeing now have been growing exponentially the last few season. Specifically, ties to the community, the fan base, local recruiting and relationships with HS coaches. These are absolutely massive problems that everyone person on here should be concerned about. Funny u skipped over all but recruiting. Not many people have good things to say about this program. That all needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. = rebuild

The portal is a two way street. It’s not some benefit a new coach will have. Every program is in the same boat. As for the players, it’s easy come easy go.

Yes, obviously a new coach will have their own coaching style. Some holdovers will buy in. Some won’t. Some will leave. = rebuild

Yes, the area has talent. CVS also allegedly has the touch… why do we not secure much local talent? Just because they have a “touch” doesn’t equal success. Goes back to local relationships and trust. We have minimal. = rebuild.

I recognize the talent on the team and the potential of incoming players. But I’m also not going to count on any of them staying the longer this goes on. The coaching was terrible this season in her absence. If ur on this team what are you actually banking on or optimistic about ?

I’ll agree on the APC. Beautiful facility. Should benefit any new coach.

However, I look at our other sports programs and see the changes Hobbs has made abs the coaches he’s hired. All have revamped their programs and suffered through years of growing pains only to be relevant on the national scene now and highly successful within our conf. I expect the same to be done here.
