When we're getting our *** kicked late in the game on Fridat because our QB can't do anything, it will be no comfort to me to think "Well, we lost to Iowa and our chance at winning 11 games this year but at least POB will still be here in 4 more years. I wonder if he'll be our starter then, or even here? But at least we have that option"!!
What in the world does it mean to craft a winning game plan for someone? There are 11guys on offense who all have a job to do. It is like all of a sudden you change what everyone knows and does. If they don't win it will be because of execution but people prefer to blame the plan like anyone can run it as long as it is "good."

If POB is our best QB then you play him because he gives you the best chance to win. Not every right decision ends up working out, doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision at the time.
I don't really have a strong opinion about O'Brien. I just would love to see Darlington get a shot based on the tiny bit we saw in the spring game, and his former status as a highly sought after QB recruit.
I agree 100%, but if he's our best QB and gives us our best chance......how in the hell do you leave him on the bench and try to convince your fans that you're playing to win the game?

I coached several years of baseball, made a lot of moves that were right at the time, pitching changes, walking a kid on purpose, moving some kids around trying different things out, etc, etc. They didn't all work out, but I was always playing to win the game. I expect the same from my football coach of my favorite team.
Nobody has answered this yet, and I've asked many times. If it's safe for Darlington to play, then why hasn't he taken a single real snap of football, ever, for us? If Riley throws Darlington out there and he gets his eggs scrambled, you guys going to just be OK with that? I won't be, I'll be pissed.
If POB was my kid and they pulled his redshirt the last game, he'd be playing somewhere else next year. Even if we somehow make the B1G championship game there is no chance of advancing to the playoffs, so what do we gain -- and that's assuming he's a better option than Darlington?

There's where everyone is missing the boat.. It isn't a single game, it's the entire season. Beat Iowa and we're 10-2 and every single poster here would consider that a great season. If we get our asses kicked by Iowa and Riley leaves our best chance to win on the bench, then I consider it a very different season and think Riley didn't do everything he could to win the game.
It's been rumored that his arm strength isn't up to the coaches' standards for this offense, that's all I've ever heard. But if he's such a risk for a life altering injury, why would he be on the team at all? He surely gets hit plenty of times at practice, and they were fine with him running in a 2 point conversion. I don't think the concussion risks are as crazy as people think. He's been fully medically cleared by doctors for a LONG time.
Tell me about his playing experience for us this year, I honestly don't know what it is.
Darlington will play before POB. The folks that think otherwise have their objections noted.
So you think they have had him running fake extra points and holding for kicks if he can't take contact? I'm not sure it was a great idea for him to continue playing at all after high school but he, his family and the doctors obviously thought it was ok. I suspect you are trying to stir up a fight when the fan base including here on this board have so little to argue about. Try harder.
I've always said if POB is OK with it, then do it. Part of that disclaimer is that his folks would be Ok with it. Obviously he's going to talk to his folks. I cannot imagine a kid playing bigtime college football at the quarterback position doesn't want a shot to play the hero, and if TA is out for the year, double bonus for his leg up on being the starter next year if he has a good showing and all the practice he'll get with the #1's for bowl prep.
More (false) assumptions - he has been working in the scheme all fall. Which is a false assumption. he's been playing scout team, running plays off of a play card. He hasn't been working Langs's scheme, so he basically would pull his redshirt and start playing in a scheme he hasn't been in since fall camp. Stupid. He wouldn't even know where to go with the ball.

Which means that in the context of a season, winning 9 instead of 10, is not that big a difference according to the fan base. And who knows, ZD running zone read and some play action, might be enough for the W, even if its not likely.

You would be wrong, and do you REALLY think I don't know that I have absolutely no power what-so-ever over this situation? I don't engage I pissing matches, want proof? Say something really inflammatory towards me, I don't care what it is, and watch me ignore you. Completely.
This is true, but the opposite is true as well. Rocky performance leading to a loss plus the loss of a RS, with Tommy playing the bowl game. Pretty big stakes for a kid who hasn't played a single snap in the college game.
And has noted above, it is likely that POB is likely our best option to win. The question is, by how much? Given an appropriate game plan for ZD plus a salty performance by our D, we may have an even odds chance to win with Darlington. Iowa is pretty beat up themselves.
Again, if we play the best available QB for a given game, as guys come off the injury roster, POB probably wouldn't be #1 for the bowl.
If you want to make "special consideration" for POB because of the "future" for the bowl practice reps in that situation, then we can't take that out of discussion about his decision now. Either we play the best available, other considerations be damned, or we look at those other considerations all the time.
If Tommy were done for the year I would agree you play POB because with a broken arm you probably won't see Fyfe Friday or in the bowl game, so if POB is much better than Darlington, get him out there for two games and get him ready for the bowl.

All of my opinions on this POB situation originates from the standpoint TA is done for the year. If TA can play the bowl game, different story. However, I'm still asking POB, I just won't put the full court press on him, but I'm asking. Plus, how do we even know if POB and or Riley will even be here in 3 years? Johnny Stanton and a host of other QB's we've had ring any bells with anyone?
If they play Fyfe with a cast I'm switching from Bud Light to Jack Daniels for a day.
Yah the frosting on a nice year comment summarizes it nicely. Given our injury situation and inexperience with POB, its entirely possible that we could play any combination of the three QB's and still come out with 2 L's.
The "happy ending" isn't the only possible outcome because you pull a shirt, for possibly only one game. We might feel bad about being 10-3 with POB playing one game. We'd feel a ton worse at 9-4 and having burned a shirt.
Darlington has the Ganz swagger, I'd love to see him play. I would think he's safe to play or he wouldn't have ran a 2 point conversion against oregon.
So you want folks to coach like they are being fired and/or transferring? Sounds like a recipe for rash decisions.
ORRRR, it was a risk versus reward for being a great teammate and Riley throwing him a bone because of his situation....IDK the answer, but if that one play is pretty much the extent of his playing career here, then color me skeptical it's safe for him to play QB against Iowa for a whole game.
He's not exclusively worked scout team all fall, it's been a mix.
He scored for the Huskers this year and got tackled going into the endzone (on a play that wasn't called by Read)! I would say he takes several real snaps every game. If they were ok putting him out there for special teams, then they should be ok with him being mixed in at QB against the Hawkeyes.
