Was setting up to kill us yesterday as we hovered around 50% throughout . . . except we hit em in the last 3 minutes when it really mattered. Great sign of a team that could smell the win and executed when it counted. Serious improvement vs previous years and will matter enormously as we go . . .

We made 6(8?) in a row at one point, but still we're missing a bunch late. From our good FT shooters too, Paul and Cam, not sure if Caleb missed one late.

But we were given a ton of oppurtunities, and if I remember right, never came up completely empty, always making at least one.

So I don't think yesterday was the greatest example of our improvement yoy, but yes it is a serious improvement, and for the season overall is a strength.

There were a lot of great moments in the game. Caleb making Izzo look ridiculous putting him at the line on purpose in a 2 posession game at the 1:47 mark is an underrated one.

Granted - Caleb had missed a few in the game earlier but when it flashed on the screen that he’s a 79% FT shooter and then he calmly drained 2 to go up 8. That was great. What a bad decision there by Izzo. It was like he was treating Caleb like MJ.

If I remember at the time, our lineup was Spencer (93%), Mulcahy (90%), Simpson (83%), McConnell (79%), and Omoruyi (65%).... and Omoruyi wasn't going anywhere near the ball. Not a lot of options there to foul, and McConnell had the lowest % for the year.

With current stats, their averages are Spencer (92%), Mulcahy (83%), Simpson (82%), McConnell (76%), and Omoruyi (63%). McConnell's still, amazingly, the best guy to foul among those who will touch the ball in that situation.

Looking at career numbers across our guards: Spencer (87%), Simpson (83%), McConnell (76%), Mulcahy (75%), Hyatt (72%), and Mag (71%)

We are not a statistically good offensive team, and we’re prone (already guilty in the game) of inbounding errors. It was the decision to foul at all in that situation that made no sense. Get a stop there and drain a 3, it’s a one possession game with an eternity still to play.

oh I have a question about fouling that occurred to me too...if you're in the bonus or double bonus, and any foul is free throws, why do teams foul the guy with the ball? Can't you just foul Cliff off the ball and send him to the line?

I thought Izzo started fouling too early.

Hilariously, some people on the sparty 247 site are complaining about a foul shot discrepeny in our favor. LOFL. Their team started intentionally fouling with 2 minutes left!!!
It was a horrible decision to foul there. Even if Caleb goes 1-2 that makes it a 3 possession game. So you put a 79% FT shooter on the line. Odds of him missing both are a lot worse than the odds of holding us to an empty possession there.

I’m pretty sure that’s some sort of technical / flagrant if you do it intentionally.

It was a tough situation, since there was 1:47 left. Our offense isn't statistically great, but it does kill a lot of clock (and gets a lot of OReb), so there was a chance of us running a significant % of the remaining time off the clock before MSU got the ball back.

Had McConnell gone 1-2 (he was only 2-5 so far that game), they could have cut the score to 5 or 4 with 1:30 still left in the game. It was a gamble, and one Izzo lost, but I don't think it made no sense at all.

It's crazy to think, though, that just 2 years ago McConnell was the best FT shooter in our 8-man rotation.... and now he's 5th. We really have improved a lot at the line.

Agreed his options were limited we had all the momentum. I don’t question it one bit

Such a gift that Izzo started fouling as early as he did . . . I actually couldn’t believe it!

And they were in the 1 and 1 with 11 minutes left in the game.
This. MSU had 3 team fouls at the time. MSU went down a couple of baskets and picked up some stupid fouls first and then the intentional fouls. Felt like an away game there for a few minutes but overall was reffed evenly.

I couldn’t understand that. I get wanting to extend it but was only a couple of possessions

I can't even count how many games I attended over the years that were losses simply because we were garbage from the line. Missing 10-15 FTs and lose by 3 or 4. Simply infuriating.
Sat by the bench once and told them my 12 yr old daughter was better from the line. They should be embarrassed as D1 athletes.
Very proud Pike has had the time to develop a team focus on the stripe. Draining gimme points and making D stops is gonna win us a lot of games. Hit 3s consistently and the sky is the limit.
Love where coach has RU with this program.
