I'm not saying that UCF players were all scrubs because they aren't. But they weren't can't miss world beaters either.

I rewatched the USF/UCF division championship game and I saw a team that played above their ability with a can't quit attitude coupled with a great scheme that allowed them to succeed. It kind of reminded me of when K-State had Collin Klein.

Scott found smart, relentless athletes to believe in what he was doing and the results showed. It will be interesting to see what he does with a fully mature senior class.

In the short term that’s all well and good. But the reality is that Frost was brought here to win championships and do more with more, because that’s what he has at his disposal. He has 6 million reasons a year to court the very best, and not just overachieve with lesser talent. He’s among the top ten highest paid coaches, he’s at a Blue Blood program that will consistently pull top 15 revenue, has some of the best facilities in the nation at his disposal. I’m guessing Frost is competitive enough that he would tend to agree, he’s going to get the talent he needs to win, and not just do more with less.

I agree with much of your post, but Frost didn’t find the vast majority of those athletes - he inherited those players

UCFs 2017 class was 53rd overall (#1 AAC) and the 2016 class Frost completed the recruiting for was 57th (#2 AAC). The two previous classes were 3 and 4 in the AAC. Frost had more talent to compete in the AAC than he now does in the B1G.

I agree but after around 40th in recruiting, it's basically a crapshoot

This may seem like it goes against the grain of your post, but I would actually argue that Frost's schemes is what separates him from others. He gets fast players open in space, and runs his formations a lot like Tom Osborne did. The opposing defenses see the exact same formation time and time again, but with little tweaks he is able to get faster athletes open in lots of space and score galore. The key, though, is a smart and efficient QB.

That's not accurate at all:

QB - McKenzie Milton - Frost Recruit - More than 4700 total yards and 45 TDs
RB - Otis Anderson - Frost Recruit- 10 TDS, more than 1000 yards from scrimmage
RB - Adrian Killins - Frost Recruit- Leading rusher 11- touchdowns- More than 1,000 AP yards.
WR - Dredrik Snelson - Frost Recruit- 700 yards receiving and 8 TDs- 2nd leading receiver
WR- Marlon Williams - Frost Recruit- #4 receiver 300 yards and 2 TDs
WR- Gabriel Davis - Frost Recruit- # 3 Receiver - 400 yards and 5 TDs

When he arrived he inherited WR Tre'QUan Smith, an absolute stud. But Smith would've been largely irrelevant without these guys bought in around him.

Frost also inherited TE Jordan Akins. He was a tough matchup, but Akins was a WR before Frost arrived. They moved him to Tight End and it changed his football career. Akins was a former Minor League Baseball player, and had been a QB in high school.

So what else did he do?

LT- Samuel Johnson - Frost Recruit started vs. Auburn in the Peach Bowl as a True Frosh. - Played in all 13 games
C- Jordan Johnson - Frost Recruit - 1st Team All-Conference- Frost's first ever recruit at UCF. He started 25 of the 26 games coached by Frost. - The kid is better than any Starting Center at Nebraska over the last half decade... which is sad.

1st Round Pick CB Mike Hughes - Frost JUCO Recruit in 2017 Class- PLayed one season and off to the NFL
All American and now Seattle Seahawk - Shaquiem Griffin- when Frost arrived, Griffin had played in 11 total games in 2 seasons, as a back up Safety. In year one under Frost, Griffin was the American COnference Defensive Player of the Year. In his second year, he was an All-American.

Frost did benefit from inheriting the UCF Defensive line and most of their linebackers/ safeties. But Central Florida in 2017 was a juggernaut because of that offense. And that offense would've been nothing without Frost's additions in 2016 and 2017.

As for Frost and recruiting, the rub has always been of the difficulty in attracting blue-chip talent to the plains. OU routinely lands solid talent, but they are just a few hours from Dallas/FW. Frost took the talent at UCF that was sufficient to compete in the AAC, topped it off with some key additions and put together one helluva ball club. Frost knows what kinds of players he wants for his offense and defense. He will not hesitate to snag a kid that might be under the radar if he thinks the kid is a fit for he wants to do.
If Frost is able to make his systems work at NU, he will begin to get more blue chip kids who are a fit for his style of play.

And those "blue chips" will take him over the top (National Title Contender). I think we see HCSF achieving more with less now, then more with more later, and playing for Titles once again. GBR

They had great players at QB, WR, TE, DE, CB. QB, DE, CB are three of the top in the country at their positions. The last time Nebraska had a top qb, top CB, and Top DE we were in a BCS game. Nobody does more with less, is a true statement, because when you do something great it means you have great. UCF had great players, who were healthy, and they played a soft schedule. That UCF team was more talented than 14 of the last 16 husker teams. At least in their top 20 players. Hiring Frost was not a risk because there was not a better option available but he is unlikely to be as great as 0-6-13 shows.

True, but we all know how 5’ 9 170 lb we hold up. Just look at us the past 5 years. Speed does great in Flo and Tex. Not sure it sets up well in the Big. Cold rainy days isn’t exactly a wr dream when you’re not as big or talented as the Big teams.

I don't know if he does more with less or if his team just doesn't beat themselves. Probably both.

Watching his teams at UCF and while he was OC at Oregon the biggest thing that jumped out at me was his teams were playing chess. They are aggressive no doubt but they just didn't make any bad moves; and when the opponents did Frost jumped all over it.

I find a lot of comfort in that fact. I have see a lot of Husker teams beating themselves in the last 18 years. Not saying Nebraska didn't get beat and it was all Nebraska's fault, ok. I am just saying I see a lot of self-restraint and a lot of chess moves by our coach. I think Nebraska is finally playing on the main stage with a head man who feels like he belongs there!

A huge part in sports is the will to never give up and fight till the end. Frost will bring that along with great coaching. I can't wait for the first game.

This isn't 1980, and cold rainy days are not the norm anymore.

Playing Big 10 football against these traditional Big 10 teams makes no sense to me. Frost has a system that can win big now and differentiates itself on offense. Sure, we need more big uglies on D but let's run this offense instead of going up against them with a style that mimics the pack. Speed kills. GBR

^ this. Frost knows that he will come out ahead not wasting too much time trying to out-recruit the OSU/MICH/PSU/SEC machine for top studs to come to an irrelevant 4-8 program. He preached about building this from the ground up, and strategic recruiting is the foundation. The on field upward trajectory bringing “relevance” back to our program will start to attract higher rated players.

In the meantime it’s gonna be do more with less. But let’s not forget on paper we out-recruit our west division foes.

^ This, and a few other posts have touched on it too, so I'll throw in how I see it:

We're a traditionally amazing program because we made a great coaching hire in the 60's, his protege carried on the tradition through 1997, and then we fell apart when we lost sight of how to have a great program in a state with a small population not near the major recruiting grounds. That thing is, create as many advantages as you can, and run a scheme that can score on anyone, even if it means running a very different offense and getting JUCO's and other athletes on the field. It took a long time for it to yield a national title, because we still had those major disadvantages, but eventually it worked and we always were good in the interim.

Frost is simply going to do more of that. His scheme is smart, fast ,and attacks where weaknesses reveal themselves. It's very stressful on a defense to have to play 11-man, very quickly, and deal with plays that could go 5 different ways at any given time. That is how you put points on teams that outclass you, and then you simply have to execute well and make sure your D can create stops.

I re-watched the UCF/Auburn game, and holy crap, thats exactly what was happening. And Auburn had a damn good defense, and they looked nasty. However, even though Milton didn't have a great first half, that scheme just creates problems, period. And UCF's D showed up in a BIG way. It was glorious, and I can't wait to see us playing like that.

He'll need to do more with more. Everyone in CFB knows what an insane moonshot it was that UCF went undefeated last year with that roster. Frost most of all.

His offense won't be something other coaches haven't seen before for long. They'll figure out ways to counter it. When they do, NU will need players who can out-execute the opposition.

Less with more is fine for this year and maybe next year while they build this thing up. After that, the reality of there being 3 teams in the B1G alone that are recruiting juggernauts is going to come home to roost.

No. Team. Has. Won. The. National. Title. Without. Top. 10. Recruiting.

Read it as many times as you need for it to sink in.

Pretty accurate coming from a UCF fan. The bulk of our squad, even this year, if Frost guys. Although I would say we all knew Treq Smith was the real deal. Even Oleary would always comment about him even when he was on the scout team. Your DC idk if anyone was crazy about they would have total breakdowns (even Temple in 2016 was a wtf moment). But Frosts offense can overcome that.
