I guess I'm hungry this morning but I have a question for the Starkville locals. Is there anyone in town that still does the big, cut from the block, hand dipped fried cheese sticks anymore? Cotton District Grill, Cheers, and a few other places used to sell them but I don't think any of those places are still in business. A lot of places sell the from a box frozen ones but they are not close to the same.

Cotton District Grill is now Central Station Grill. I don’t know if they’re the same cheese sticks, but they are good. Also Veranda and Harvey’s.

Stagger Inn has some good ones. I drowned my sorrows from the 2017 Egg Bowl by consuming about 2 or 3 orders I believe.

I can confirm it didn't look like a functioning restaurant Sunday. Place was a mess and I didn't see tables and chairs set up. I heard a while back they were moving into a new location...don't know about that part though.

Stagger is officially closed as of about a month, fixtures are all gone too. Gondolier that was next to new Mugshots is gone too. Georgia Blue is now open on Montgomery. Nothing yet on the new Taco place in the old City Bagel place but it is being remodeled for that. Rumor was the building behind Lowes on Stark Rd where Reggie Kelly had a restaurant will be the location for Walk Ons but strictly a rumor.

Good info. Gondolier and Beef O’Brady’s (Reggie Kelly’s restaurant) were on borrowed time from the get-go. Both are very crappy chains and didn’t really offer anything new at all to the Starkville dining scene.

That sucks about Stagger In, they were a solid spot. But, that’s prime real estate and someone will move in there and do really well. And hopefully there is a cheese stick clause in the lease that allows them to honor the tradition of their two predecessors in that building.

Stag is moving to the new area by the district.

The recipe DS posted is straight from the Flo's kitchen as long as he added the step I missed originally. I left out the seasoned flour originally and if you dont coat it in the flour first, the panko falls off when frying. The key is freezing them though and frying from frozen.

The Stagger In location has been a solid spot since at least the late 80's. (The original Cotton District Grill {that became Toby Nash's}, the Grill {this is the Grill at Central Station}, to Stagger-in) Something will fill the void. And it must have cheese sticks preferably the bacon cheddar.

I thought Stagger was moving downtown in the new development on the corner of Main and Jackson.

That’s always been my favorite spot in Starkville to hang out, ever since high school. Just a cool location in general at the top of the hill there and surrounded by the neighborhood.

Depending on where you're coming from, Lake Tiak-O'Khata in Louisville has mighty fine cheese logs (the battered kind). Wife and I have become more frequent there over the past year. They also have excellent shrimp and catfish. I've had a nice steak a few times that was actually just a notch under Anthony's.

I hope walk-ons doesn't go to that location. I was hoping it would be closer to campus or downtown. The old Mugshots building would be a great spot in my opinion - it needs something in there. I'm not sure if Walk-on's and Mugshots are too similar for it to come into the mill/cotton district area.

I guess they've done more market research than me.

Whatever happened to Big Jim that used to own/run the Original Cotton District Grill? That place had the coldest beer around.

It was never my favorite but yeah, I won't go there anymore. The last 2x I did I struggled to find anything I wanted on the menu

If you’re referring to Big Jim Moser, he passed away a few years back. He owned the District Cafe’/Toby Nash’s Sports Bar after he left the original CD grill. I bartended at Toby Nash’s for a couple years when I was in school. Their cheese sticks were some of the best I’ve ever had and you’re correct - the beer was ice cold and he had like 20 beers on tap when most places still had only 2 or 3.

The food there was awesome. I’m FB friends with his widow and have already scored their London Broil recipe from her. May need to hit her up for the cheese stick ones (they did the mozz, pepper jack, and bacon cheddar).

Maybe my favorite item from any place in Starkville c. 1992-1994 were those Cotton District Grill cheese sticks, in this order: 1) bacon cheddar, 2) mozz, then 3) pepper jack. Getting your hands on that recipe would be a coup.

So what's the deal with the seasoned flour? Somebody else referenced missing a step - it calls for dipping them in seasoned flour but doesn't say what it is.

nobody beats Flo and Eddies. But when Walk-ons opens, theirs are comparable.

Walk-ons has the hand battered cheese sticks?

A Walk-on just opened close to me. My kids have had the frozen cheese sticks that are OK but have never had real ones. They need to be introduced.

I've ordered cheese sticks in a number of places and Starkville is the only place I've gotten the hand battered.

Do you mean Main and Montgomery? Or are they finally tearing down the Soviet bank across from Hotel Chester?
