Not fouling on defense is also a skill.

The discrepancy isn't based on Ref bias. It's based on how well both teams are in that area.

Houston is the 2nd best defensive team in the country. They are also 323rd in Free Throw Rate. On offense, they are 241st in drawing free throws.

If you are going to beat that team, that's exactly how you must do it.
