We move my daughter in at UNC on the 12th. I am looking for any tips or tricks to make this as smooth as possible. My only experience has been moving my older daughter into college but that was a small private university so I feel like it may be a different animal and probably not nearly as chaotic as what we are about to wade into.

They normally have some folks there who can help unload and move things up to the room. Have your stuff organized with lots of big containers, which you can unpack and take back home. Be prepared for the tears.

What dorm? Most are staggered load in times so that helps. But as 84 says, patience is key.

Craige is where she ended up being put. She said she was good with it as it’s a close walk to the Bosh
Our youngest was in Craige for his Freshman year.....second floor so steps and elevator never a problem. They staggered move in and we just parked in deck at the load in spots and it was easy with carts, etc.

Ole Crusty Craige....lol. Dorms are 95% of what you make it and you have built in folks you'll get to know well in the suites so plenty of oppy to make friends. Real downside to suite and roommate life is if you are the type that needs peace and some solitude on the regular. Good luck finding that in the high rises.

I think she’s on the fourth floor but I don’t remember. I have no idea why they did it but her and her roommate are supposed to move in on the same day and time. I told her we would just unload her stuff and that we could go mess around for a while or something. There is no way both girls and families can be in there at the same time. We have all day to get it done.

Is this your youngest / last child going off to college?

If so you better allocate time for the mental breakdown you and your wife will be having.

Yes she’s my baby. Hell, my wife is already weepy and it’s still a week away. 😂

The day we dropped our youngest daughter off at college is easily the most emotional day of my life so far, but my oldest daughter is getting married in 4 weeks and I can already see this one coming a mile away.

My oldest daughter has an engagement coming as well. Her boyfriend of five years asked me to go play golf next weekend. He has never asked me to go play with him. I would really hold him up as he is just alot better than I am. My daughter says he “wants to talk to me” is the reason. I know he took her and her sized for a ring probably two months ago. Super nice guy. Hard worker. Comes from a great family. He still isn’t good enough for my baby though. 😎

I think early is better. I’m helping my oldest move back in on 8/12 as he is living in a super suite in Morrison this year. Last year, he lived in Horton.

I think boys are a lot easier on what they actually need but girls are easier on unpacking. Meaning if we had left bags unpacked, they would have stayed unpacked the whole semester. A girl would never do that. He needs a lot less but my wife always overdoes it so we end up there forever. Last year, she was hanging curtains in the room.
I will say this - make the dorm the hangout spot. We brought a couch, curtains, big TV and honestly set it up like a man’s cave. That helped my introvert son as everyone (including the girls next door) gravitated to his room as the spot to be. He met so many folks that way. A lot of kids nowadays don’t even bring TVs which is crazy to me but they are all used to streaming on devices. Push against that.

This afternoon while she was packing and so forth she is sending all these pictures of different outfits calling them “gameday fits”. Maybe I need to be more like her. She doesn’t seem to care if the team is not supposed to be very good. She has different outfits planned for every game. 😂

I’m still shaking my head over TVs in dorm rooms. We had stereos. The TV was down the hall in the common area lounge.

TVs weren't invented yet nor was FM radio when I was in a dorm. lmao Had a record player that was a suitcase and it played 45s.
I literally had a big ole tube TV in my room and had a nintendo which brought all the folks to the room freshman and sophomore year.

The Sega Genisis Lakers Celtics and Bulls v Lakers games on first floor Granville South (IYKYK) were epic.

Now kids need hi speed wifi to breathe....lol

I still remember the first time I played a Nintendo. Duck Hunt and Super Mario Brothers. My all time favorite was Tecmo Bowl though. Bo Jackson and the Raiders would straight wreck fools.

I know it’s harder for girls, but try to not bring too much.

Just bring the essentials and what you’ll need the first few weeks.

I waited to bring some stuff like winter clothes and it made things easier.

They stagger move-in like others have said, so it’s not as difficult as 5k kids moving in at one time.

In law school at Campbell (back when it was in Buies Creek), my dorm room had a window A/C, stereo with turntable, TV, microwave, and hot plate. One guy walked in a said it looked like Circuit City South.

Well, tomorrow is the day. Pulling out at 5:45 in the morning and heading east. Pray for me to stay calm and to just go with flow.

It will be one of the most nerve wracking days in your life, just hang in there and try to relax.

This is a freaking madhouse, but it could be worse. I feel sort of sorry for the three guys patrolling the parking lot at Craige trying to get people in and out. We parked in the deck. Yes it’s a little farther to tote stuff but with my hand struck and carts it wasn’t too bad. Now the ladies are unpacking and decorating. I am out on the balcony. Not enough room to breathe in there with two girls and their moms all in there together.
