Freeze and Bob Tyler

Most probably don't remember the Bob Tyler era at Msu, but there seems to be a lot of similarities.

Oh, all I can say about the OM inquiries whether there is a storm ahead or not, it's gonna hurt for a while! I love it when any school has fans that say "it ain't nothing to it"! Maybe not but it causes folks to sweat more than normal.

The similarity I'm seeing are two energetic guys that recruit better than you would think they could (w/o cheating). Tyler brought in a shitload of talent at MSU. Like a friend of mine once said, "I hate Barry Bonds. But I could learn to like him if he were a Brave.". I'd say the same for Freeze.

If Bruiser Kinard had not been in power at OM in the early 70`s Tyler would have probably been hired instead of Billy Kinard. I still believe Tyler would have gotten OM back to the national status they enjoyed in the late 50`s and early 60`s. He knew how to get things done. He was instrumental starting the Bulldog Club at State and gave us a glimpse of what we could be if we pulled together and learned to recruit. There are definitely some similarities between him and Freeze IMO.

Problem was that Tyler started winning and recruiting good athletes, which didn't sit too well with the Ole Miss faithful. They got their buddies at the NCAA to put us on probation with some mickey mouse charges, and Tyler went downhill. In hindsight, we probably shouldn't have let become AD along with being head coach, because it split his time performing his primary job of being HC.

How is it hard to see how Freeze got these players? Robert Nkemdiches brother was already on the team, Treadwells best friend Anthony Standifer was already on the team, Conner is from SP and Tunsil said he wanted to go against the best in practice and the best in RN. He got his foot into good schools

That's all true. The vast majority of OM supporters wanted Tyler as HC in the worst way. I don't think there strong similarities between the two and agree that Freeze is more like Steve Sloan. It seems that there was also a power struggle about funding of football and baseball, and Polk won out, but could be mistaken. The fact is that Tyler was always an OM guy at heart, and took the State job to prove to them that they should have hired him. Then they attempted to destroy him, and it was successful.

The big difference in Freeze and Sloan was that Sloan was the hottest young coaching prospect in the country when OM hired him. His hiring made national news and there was absolutely no way he could fail at OM.

He won at State....he would have dominated at OM at that time. We`re very lucky it worked out the way it did.

There is no way Tunsil would have gotten to practice against top competition at Georgia. Only at the might Ole Miss University.

The power struggle was between Tyler and Greene...........

and Greene left for Murray St. Within the next year, Tyler is asked to step down as AD. Tyler then demands a new title - Director of Football - and he wants a budget separate from the Athletic Dept. Pres McComas refuses and Tyler quits.

I don't think OM had much to do with Tyler's downfall. He out recruited Cooper while he was on probation and then beat Sloan when they went head to head. I remember all the hype around Sloan's first class. It was full of out of state players (Fourcade) and was nationally ranked. Tyler's was still better.

rex dockery and bill parcells were the hottest young coordinators in the country. sloan was just along for the ride.
