Brother I feel you on the show choir. Last three weekends have been Albertville, Oak Mountain and Homewood. The latter two got me home between 3-4 am.
Yep. Daughter in middle school. Got a hotel room though.

I googled "Show Choir" when I saw his original message and I'm still not quite sure what it is or how it's different than theater.
As someone involved in it, can you explain it to this simpleton?
Speaking of show choir, I always say LSU baseball players look like they are coming off a 3 year stretch for procession with intent to distribute and our players look like they were in HS show choir.
I thought I was the only dubmass that didn't know what the heck that dang thang is.
Show choir competitions usually pit 5-10 schools against one another where each does about a 15-20 minute performance usually based around a theme. Some themes might be more along the lines of telling a story, others might just be something like greatest hits of the 80s or the best songs of Billy Joel. While vocals are obviously very important, show choir emphasizes the SHOW part as well. Choreography is a big part of it. Another part is show design which includes the costumes, lighting, and other effects (lighting, screens, props, etc). Most choirs change costumes a couple of times during their show.
There are some incredibly gifted choirs in Mississippi. Clinton is nationally known for their program. They won the last competition we were at. Madison Central, NWR, JA, Prep…all of them are good. West Jones is also really good. They won the competition two weeks ago at Oak Mountain, beating one of Alabama’s traditionally strong programs from Homewood.
My daughter was a gymnast through ninth grade but then she had to make a choice between the two. I’m glad we did gym and she learned a lot from it, but show choir has been the defining experience of her high school years. It’s full of great kids who are her best friends and AHS is blessed with two incredible directors who push and encourage the kids. The competition days are looooong but I’m one of those parents that if my kid is participating, I’m going to be there until the end. I won’t miss getting home at 3 in the morning next year but I’ll miss seeing her on stage with other kids who are also giving it everything they have.
