Ulis came to UK to be a 4 year guy and to get better. I think it’s fair to say he didn’t expect to start over Andrew Harrison.
This is simply not true. In fact, Cal told Ulis he did not expect him to be a 4 year player, and is the reason Ulis picked UK over Michigan St. Ulis and Booker ended up being OK with it, but they expected the twins to leave.
Well, I'm trying not to be argumentative, so I'm just going to let this go, no need to go back and forth. Sometimes good players like to play with other good players and we have at least 4 ace recruiters, so that's why I think it’s possible to get the players I listed.
Impossible, no I wouldn't say it's impossible, just think it is highly, highly unlikely. I simply think that the examples that you used do not support a history of Cal and his assistants pulling something like this off. I also think there has been a shift in players mentality post 2015, which is when several top end players started going to schools where they could be the star, and not just one of the stars.
It would be nice to have a high end starter and back-up at every position, and then a couple of good players beyond that, especially if you can keep everybody happy. If Cal was being open and honest, I think he would tell you he would like to send 4-5 guys to the NBA every year, with 1-2 of those guys being freshmen, 1-2 being sophomores, 1-2 being juniors and/or seniors. So he would like to sign about a 5 man class every year consisting of a couple of OAD, can't miss prospects, a couple of guys that could get there year 2 or so, and a guy or 2 that would take 3-4 years to get there. Maybe even a player or 2 beyond that. A roster that looks like:
5 freshmen
3 sophomores
2 Juniors
1 Senior
That is what I think Cal's ideal roster is. That would be 10 high end guys. Having said that, Cal also likes a 7-8 man rotation, with those 7-8 being clearly better than the rest. But every time he has had that type of set-up, the couple of guys that don't play much transfer. He is just better when he only has 7-8 guys expecting to play, as chemistry seems to be better with those teams. He got Lamb to take a back seat his freshman year, but I think that is harder than most realize, as most guys in the top 100 expect to play at least 15-20 minutes a game. I would be thrilled with this roster:
TyTy
Fredrick
Grady
Collins
Oscar
Brooks
Toppin
Hopkins
Ware
If he could get another player or 2 and keep those guys happy, I'm all for it.
