Would like to know more about this officers background prior to labeling him a chicken. Sounds like he may have froze up when it was time for him to react. That's the one thing I would worry about when it comes to training a teacher how to use a weapon. If you're going to carry, then you have to have the balls to use it when necessary.

there are plenty of videos of officers freezing. Some even killed because of it. It happens to trained officers of course it will happen to teachers and regular people like us.

Great! How do you test for that? I mean, I know that the internet is full of people who would never freeze up in a situation like that, but how do you test the rest of the folks?

Trust the government to protect us from the nut buying the gun? Nope

Trust the government to protect the kids in the school? Nope

Trust the government to protect you once they collect all the guns? Nope

Foolish ever totally trusting the government? Yup

You train your officers. The sheriff owns this failure.

I dont blame him. If he isnt trained properly or if they knew he was hesitant it is on the department.

Training is one thing. When real bullets are flying it is another. I can sit here and tell you how I would run into that school and end the situation. I sure hope I would, but I've never been under fire before. I can't say with certainty that I wouldn't freeze up. I'd bet you are in the same category. And this gets to my concern about arming some teachers. This was a cop with hundreds of hours of training. We expect a teacher with tens of hours of training at best to do better?

1) I would wager this officer hasn't had children yet.
2) Hundreds of hours of training doesn't always mean squat, so you have a valid concern, however, any teacher/administrator/volunteer that would be willing to go through a higher level of training (weeks of intense firearms training combined with drills and law) would at least be in a position where they are able to respond should they choose to do so. I'd create a new classification of Deputy Marshall's, open to anyone willing to meet rigorous testing and training.

I hate the fact that I have to disarm whenever I visit my kid's school. Because if I didn't have to, those kids would be slightly safer while I'm there than when I enter the school unarmed.

You may be right about the guy, but I've seen people do some stupid things with guns in lower stress situations - hunting mostly. I have no military experience, but I remember my dad's stories from his time as a medic in WWII. The main thing I took from some of those is that people do some strange things when suffering under extreme stress.

You dont know if that cop had 100s of hours of training. I dont agree at al with you about not knowing how one will react. Ive been around cops all my life.

Mot only disgraceful but bordering on criminal. Should never be allowed to serve in any such capacity again.
