Yeah its a major major problem. I'd expect Geo, Ron, and Paul to be MUCH MUCH better. They all gotta be closer to 80%. Cliff and Myles - you'll get what you get.

Montez & Jacob are the X factor because they both get to the line a good amount too.

7-16 was ugly, but this team is finding ways to dominate games despite that

I do agree, it WILL cost us a game or two and it will be a crushing loss

that said Myles hit both of his.

Concerned that Mulcahy does not hit at a good level, Mathis too, and sometimes JY

Hate to start another thread but this is literally what is going to cost us from being a top 10 team; You CANNOT shoot 43% from the foul line especially against our next opponent
We all agree. It's a mental thing now and not a physical thing. Harper is too good to miss two FT's. The same with Young, Omorui (sp?), and Mathis. Even Myles hit his first two. There is no reason to not shoot at least 65%. And you're right. We cannot continue to shoot FT's like this against the better teams.

Geo didn’t have any free throws

The reasons were good at other things are the reasons were not a great FT shooting team. Missed 3 FTs below our average. It’s not as big a deal as everyone makes is out to be.

I like Cliff's stroke. I think he will eventually be a decent FT shooter. Nice arc and follow through. Perfectly straight just back rimmed both.

Its a problem for sure. Many nights they will be talented enough to overcome it but the league is too difficult to give that many points away. I was a little surprised Maryland did not make it more of FT contest down the stretch. Pike will be asked about it and he will dismiss it as a concern. He will say they are all good FT shooter and he not really concerned.

This. We are an emotional team. Not a bunch of selfish thugs just throwing the call around. They have heart. Big celebrations on the sideline. At the same time that mental piece is why we miss free throws. It’s a tradeoff

It’s 3 off the average. We’re gonna sit here and talk about 3 FTs and gloss over 47% from 3? It’s just math not as big a deal as it’s continually made out to be.
It will be in a tight game against a good team if it continues.

Yeah but again the reason will have been in that tight game against a big team is because of the fact that we are better at other things than we are at free throwing shooting.

47% from 3 and we aren't losing many games. Thanks Ron

Harper is our shooter. He’s the one I think we need to see significant improvement.

Yes, we have not shot free throws well so far, but it is not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be. We have won every game by double digits. We will definitely get better from the line. There is no way that we will continue to shoot so poorly from the line.

Playing tough Defense is much more important. If we play tough Defense every game, we will be fine the rest of the way.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Tonight we made 5 of our first 6 and than Jacob missed one in the last 3 seconds of the first half to give us 5-7 for the first half. In the second half we were only 2 of 9. Ron was 1-3, Cliff was 0-2. Montez was 0-2 and Paul was 1-2 in the second half for only 2-9 as a team in the second half. WE only made 2 of our last 10 attempts. We really need to start improving these stats. If we were 12 of 16 we would have won by 19 points.

In reference to a previous movie coach comparison thread, Legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks was mentioned. A Herbie move, would be to delay the bus and have them shoot free throws until Custodians closed the gym...

Kind of mystified that this hobgoblin has not been addressed and corrected. Bring in a "specialist" consultant.

They can shoot 0% at the line if they keep hitting 40+% of three pointers.

Team of destiny????
When we shoot poorly from the field, we shoot well from the foul line.
One game we get no points from Mathis, the next game he’s a match up problem.
With Geo back if you over rotate to take away Jr...Geo is going to kill you.
Then Myles plays like Moses Malone.
No one has a clue what Jacob is going to do, including his own teammates.
Paul dishes, plays D and grabs rebounds.

We have to be a nightmare to prepare for

In most games subpar FT shooting will not matter, but we're also not going to shoot 47% from 3 in most games. The reason getting 4 or 5 extra points is so important is because it stops runs or pads leads. It also can change the number of possessions that your team is in the lead or behind, changing the strategy and maybe forcing lower percentage shots (or conversely, allowing the trailing team to work it inside for a better shot).
