It looks an awful lot like the Flipmas was spoiled this year by the Leach and Co. Did he do the mature thing and let those 18 year old kids have their fun and quietly send them packing because he knew what was up? Or perhaps it was genuinely a case of he had better prospects commit so there wasn’t a place for them? Or did they really de-commit?

There was an article on 247 a week or so ago about the coaching staff having serious talks with their commits about where they stand. Sounded like they got ahead of most of the BS before it happened.

We dropped Howard and Williams, so not the same situation there as Pounders and Buckhalter.

We would’ve taken Pounders and Buckhalter but once it was clear they had other plans, we moved on too. But we’ve already locked down replacement(s) at WR and are working to do so with Pounders on the OL.

When Pounders put out a Top 5 after being committed since spring, my understanding is that the staff let him know he needed to get things in order or let's be honest about the situation and go ahead and decommit. Word was he was planning on a hat ceremony for a splash on signing day and Leach sussed it out and took the splash way.

Similar with Buck, right?

Yep..: Buckhalter and Pounders wanted to do the cool splash hat toss flip that the Ole Miss fanboys could wack off to during Christmas....Howard and Williams we went a different direction..

Very happy with the way the current MSU staff handled these situations. Much better than what we've seen in the past. The other thing is that while Pounders and Buckhalter are quality prospects, they are by no means irreplaceable. We seem to be well on our way to finding comparable guys to take those spots. Glad we were proactive in moving on.

Yeah they were planning for some dramatic flipmas festivities, but we sort of got out in front of it.

I couldn’t care less about Buckhaulter because we will get a receiver to replace him that is just as good. Wish we could have hung on to Pounders because we really need another HS OL- but if he wants to be at OM, by all means go.

We just purged the roster of guys who weren’t totally bought in. Why try to bring in more that want to be somewhere else?

I read the other day one of the kids is working with coaches/guidance counselors on their schedule for when they will be getting on campus. Doing all the early paperwork, etc. My theory is that they press these issues on the kids and when some push back it tells them where they stand.

This sounds like a lot of truth here.

The transfer portal solves a lot of problems.

Sounds like Leach is experienced enough to read the tea leaves and the bs.
Agree, very impressed with the staff's handling of the shenanigans so far. Time will tell on who they sign and if they can play, but they don't seem to be shocked by anything. Only get that through experience, and experience at programs similar to MSU.

the merry-flipmas comment... even after he had already been decommitted... is pretty good evidence pointing towards these things being planned in advance.

Too bad Leach ruined his show before it started.

Serious question- has any OM flip from State ever panned out?

The only one that came close was CJ Johnson....he had moments, but he's definitely not in the League.

All the other MSU flips turned out to be SWAC material.

None to my knowledge. I think the whole thing is rather childish but we all have something we suffer from....as minute as some of those things might be. The two players that “flipped” were 3* players. That’s not exactly something to get worked up about. State could have easily come out with tweets stating they had no interest in those two players but they didn’t. I guess it’s the old burn no bridges adage.

That may just be rambling but it was part of the basic mindset when I made the original post.

I was wondering the same, and I think the cases have been rare. CJ Johnson was memorable because let’s face it, he was just annoying as hell, but I don’t think there have been many that really panned out.

Didn’t that kid that tossed the MSU hat on the ground 4-5 years ago not even make it to spring practice before being kicked off campus?

That was terrible, and incredibly sad. Talk about attention seeking stupidity. And he didn't have a single friend good enough to say "just don't". I hope none of our recruits do this kind of crap. I'm sure they wouldn't. Salt of the earth grind for my State guys have their head on straight by this age.

Yep C.J. is about the only one, but remember, it's not about what they did at Ole Miss, it's about what they didn't do at MSU. C.J. could have been great for us, he would have played LB rather than DE. He was the only flip that was a true MSU type guy. Just a dumb decision all around on his part, and shows why you can't let yourself get caught up in signing day hype.

It's not just the ones that do flip, a lot of the recruits that people get worked up over never do anything. Certainly not all of them (Chris Jones and Simmons had a lot of attention), but it seems like just as many as not. Who was the deaf cornerback at UM? Robert Elliot. I remember a highly rated RB out of I think Meridian that Ole Miss got and had a career basically like elliot.

Its EXTREMELY childish and petty. I don't understand why OM can't just recruit like a normal school without trying to scheme these planned flips just for seemingly the sake of theatrics. If a guy legitimately changes his mind at some point, that's one thing, but a lot of these flips to OM from MSU are apparently planned from the very start I guess for them to take up a spot on the MSU recruiting board and for OM to get some sort of media publicity splash out of it so they can feel better about themselves. OM just really seems to have no class in any aspect of how they do things in just about any area including the way their players act during the Egg Bowl.

Unfortunately most of CJ's moments at OM were against State. Other than that, even CJ wasn't worth the money. Maybe just sacking MSU QBs made him worth it.
