For Saints fans...

[Rick Cleveland]

I usually just post my columns about State here, but know there are many Saints fans among you and many who well remember Ray Guy...

I was really impressed with the Saints win yesterday. I didn't think they had a chance with Brees out.

Used to run into Ray somewhat regularly around Hattiesburg watering holes. One of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. A 93 yard punt? That just doesn’t seem fair.

One day they were holding the intramural track meet when Ray walked by on the way to class. They were doing the softball throw. Some guy had thrown it 297 feet, which barely beat my brother. Both of them had run up to the line to throw the ball. Guy said, "Let me try." He threw it once, without a running start: 331 feet. 48 years later, it is still the record. He was a phenomenal athlete. Could throw football 80 yards.

He's known in the locker room as 'The Leg'.

I'd classify that as stealing a victory. Offense was not good but special teams, defense and Seattle's poor play gave them a win I didn't think they'd get. Now if they could steal 2 or 3 more before Brees gets back, we're in business.

Ray Guy is awesome. I still remember being at the Rice - Southern Miss game five years ago when he was honored for being inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Eagles quarterback even wore 44 (Guy's number at USM) that night.

Morstead is a weapon and had a major hand in defeating Seattle Sunday. His directional punts with serious hang time are better than any punter I have ever seen. If the ball does not check up like you pointed out in the article, it goes out of bounds. If you see a Morstead punt down the middle of the field , it is a mistake. The dude is a physical freak. Great guy too.

He was a very fine baseball player, too.
