I've posted pieces of this info in responses on other posts, but thought I'd put it here for those who have not seen it. Here's some basic info on football recruiting services.
There are four main football recruiting services: 247Sports, On3, Rivals, and ESPN. All four of them use the star ratings, of course.
All four usually name 32 five star recruits, to coincide with the number of first round NFL draft picks.
Sometimes, they might choose a couple more depending on overall class talent. But it's usually never more than 34.
These numbers are approximate annual averages:
4,000 -- Evaluated prospects nationwide
32 -- Number of five star recruits
275 -- Number of four-star recruits
2,000 -- Number of three-star recruits
On Rivals, 49 teams have at least one four-star commitment, and 19 teams have more four-star recruits than the five we have.
On 247, 53 teams have at least one four-star commitment, and 12 teams have more four-star recruits than the seven we have.
A four-star recruit is about as good as it gets.
