Flops and Chris Beard

I hadn’t watched much of Texas Tech this year. I’ve always been under the impression that Chris Beard was a good coach. With that said, the flopping was pathetic tonight. It’s disgusting basketball. I don’t know if that’s their normal game plan or if they were just desperate to do everything for a win tonight.

After seeing that style of play, are you turned off of the idea of Beard being a potential coaching candidate here down the road, or does it not change your opinion?

Personally I’ve found pride in the fact that Kentucky basketball has never played anything but real basketball. No gimmicks and nothing cheap. I find flopping disgusting and it reflects upon the coaches, but maybe I’m overreacting.

It really changed my perception of Chris Beard. I truly believe coaching is the main reason it happens. You might get a player here and there that’s more likely to play that way but it was a concerted effort to flop by their entire team tonight. Screw that.

I know Nate is strong, but that guy brushed his shoulder and went flying back like he got hit by a train even though Nate was set for the screen and the other guy initiated the contact. Dude went flying backward. The year flopping will be a point f emphasis LMFAO. I haven't seen it called in one of our games, but dam have I seen some flops. Just between ARK and tonight, you could make a highlight reel.

Flopping is the only counter to having unstoppable guards, which we do. It's ridiculous. A team like ours should blow out teams like TTU but the refs make sure the game is competitive.

I just can’t believe that the idea that a player standing there like a statue with his hands on his crotch can, with no effort on his part, cause 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6 point swings for literally not playing the game.

I see that happen and I always think I can’t believe I’m sitting here living and dying by this ****.

Talent and Coaching will beat floppers 99% of the time.

I'm super excited for what this team can/will do moving foward! To go into that place and face that crowd and deal with sketchy calls all night and an off night by several main players and still fight and come out with a win is extremely impressive and shows true growth!

Well, if that's a staple of his coaching system, he clearly couldn't be the coach at UK. That crap just doesn't fly at UK. I'm not saying we're too good or our program and fans would necessarily reject. I'm saying that officials wouldn't make those calls for us. It's that simple. He would find out very quickly that flopping on any contact just wouldn't be called.

In fact, I'll take it a step further, even for our current team. The officials are supposed to be paying attention to flopping this season, watching for it, and calling it as 1 shot technical (if memory serves). If Calipari told our team to start flopping on every contact, all of sudden, the officials would start paying attention to the new flopping rules.

I've always loved the fact that Calipari doesn't coach his players to do this kind of crap.

But it's beyond old how screwed we get on:
- flop charges about 5 times a game
- bizarre calls on players (or technicals on Cal) that they never call on other teams...tonight they decided we were the only team capable of carrying the ball

If Cal quit today, we could do worse than Beard. I hate flopping, but I damn sure hate losing a lot more.

I don't like Brad Stevens' style or personality, but I'd welcome him as our coach if he wanted to replace Cal in the future.

Win big. Don't get caught cheating. Be a good steward of the program. In that order.

The two things that drive me nuts is flopping is supposed to be a point of emphasis...but it just confuses refs still. I dont get it, if you know a team flops why do you give them the benefit of the doubt.

2. Refs need to come out and admit they have no clue what they're doing in block/charge. I get its instantaneous but they are just guessing

also our guys rarely if ever show up the official. there were two or three fouls called on nate that were frankly atrocious and all he did was look at cal smile and walk away. our guys are pretty good about that or so it seems from watching it on tv. seems like cal tells them to vent to him and not on the refs like we already know the typical way they’re going to operate.

nick was looking to the officials tonight but ironically he ended getting calls in the end. he deserved them all but the type that refs could have screwed us on. a couple out of bounds plays where he was working on the offensive glass, a couple defensive rebounds, the charge etc. he was working for those calls and getting animated. and weirdly it seemed to work a little.

i didn’t see quickley or maxey ever complain over the whistles that made up most of their combined 11 turnovers. at least as far as antics or body language voicing displeasure. there was one where it was so bad that maxey lifted his arms and one where juzang ;another bad call) was looking in different directions in disbelief.

Blame the NCAA rules committee more than coaches. Dick Vitale ( who i'm no fan of ) has been saying for years, a charge should be a turnover, not a foul. And I agree with him. And on an obvious flop, stop the game, watch a replay, access a technical foul to the flopper. That would break this flopping **** up

This is the truth right here if we started flopping on every play oh yea the rule would definitely be enforced!

I clearly am in the minority here but I don't think trying to take a charge is flopping . You can disagree with the charge calls as I did think the TT defenders moved under our guys.

Flopping to me is the Sestina foul or what we saw in the Arkansas and SC games when guys blatantly over react to virtually no contact at all .. that is what disgusts me.

trying to take a legitimate charge is perfectly fine by me .

I was never big on taking charges, but squaring up and taking a hit, then falling back on your butt is a legitimate basketball play.

Sliding in at the last second should favor the offensive player, imo.

And all these guys acting like they’ve been shot out of a cannon has got to go. Start passing out 2 games suspensions for that stuff and it would stop.

Well said. When I coach youth basketball, I try to get kids to square up and take charges. If not offense can just put head down and drive like a bull in a china shop . Nick Richards moves his feet , squared up and took a charge . That is perfect defense. I don't blame fans for getting frustrated about kids sliding under to try and take charge , but my point is that is not really a flop . You can argue whether it is a block or charge . Just seems like there are many here that want to lump that into the category of a flop and I don't think that is correct to do so.

The charge call on Maxey when Moretti tried to slide in front of him going baseline with about 2:10 to go in regulation was terrible.... not even close to a charge... Moretti was moving/shuffling feet nearly as much as Maxey.

Only way to fix it is for refs to not blow the whistle when a guy falls down. Let his team play 4 on 5. It will soon stop. The only offensive foul called should be a push off.

the one with Sestina was CLEARLY a flop! I couldn't believe the refs didn't see that. And, on drives, the defensive player MUST give the offensive player room to come down. The defensive player cannot slide into that space when the man with the ball has already left the floor. Changing direction in the air would violate the laws of physics....

This all goes into the narrative of why we need proper accountability for ALL CBB OFFICIALS. There's little to no uniformity in how calls have been made from league to league..... forever.

SEC style has always been physical and athletic, ACC in my eyes, more finesse (mainly because they're trying to prevent the floppers from flopping so as not to lose the game, hence they seek less physical contact) And each league it's own.

The bottom line is that we need salaried referees that have a clearly defined structure to how they apply the rules uniformly and get graded accordingly.

How hard can this be to implement? Apparently, for the NCAA, it's :
"Speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil."

Sad, deplorable. This is the way officiating is in college basketball.
