Maybe even more amazing than the pass is the fact the player receiving the pass actually looks like he was expecting to receive it.

That really was amazing. I wonder what game was this pass was made?
It was in the 1973 Final Four game vs. Memphis State in St. Louis. Providence lost, then Memphis State lost to UCLA in the finals.

John Somogyi, my high school coach, once told us that Ernie D dribbled a ball to and from high school every day. He told us that if we wanted to become great ball handlers, this is something we should do. Needless to say, I didnt follow that advice and hence, my ball handling skills were subpar, at best. Ok, my flashback of the day.

A great college player who was a smaller version of Pistol Pete Maravich.

Ernie D wasn't close to Pistol Pete in terms of an overall player.

Maravich never averaged fewer than 43.8 points and four assists per game. Even in his final season when he averaged 44.5 points per game he also averaged six assists per game. That despite every team knowing they had to stop Maravich. Ernie D also had Marvin Barnes I could name another guy that played with Pete Maravich.

Was at that game in St. Louis. If Barnes didn't foul out, PC would have been in the finals. Memphis just too big. Indiana/UCLA was a good semifinal also.

Barnes sprained his knee in the first half and missed most of the game. He tried to play in the 2nd half but was hobbling and ineffective.

At least the most difficult.

A great pass because it was completed, but probably not a great decision because two defenders were right there. A great college player, but Maravich was the best college passer I've ever seen. I remember seeing at the Garden when he got a rebound and threw a perfect 80+ bounce pass for a layup, and he threw great behind the back passes with both hands also.

Dick Vitale had high school player Les Cason
carry around a basketball around for days if he was Sloppy in practice or a game. Did not help him so much

I read somewhere that the player who caught the pass was Kevin Stacom - who I believe had a cup of coffee with the Celtics. Cold you imagine if he missed the layup?..oh boy...lol

More than a cup of coffee. He was there 4 years, defensive stopper. Earned a ring in '76. I think he's a NBA scout for Dallas now.

That was an amazing pass! I did get to watch Pistol Pete on TV and he was unbelievable especially since, as noted above, every team's plan was to stop him or at least hold him to below his average. Although I did not see Bill Walton in person during his college days, I did get to see him in the pros and he was a phenomenal passer which surprised me. The best passer I have ever seen in any sport was Wayne Gretzky. He could have scored a ton more goals but he would hit his teammates at will, unfortunately some of them didn't think he could make the pass.

Pistol Pete best I have ever seen. But guy who never gets enough credit and maybe just as good as any of them is Rick Barry. He carried the Nets and Golden State to titles passing with nobodies.

I enjoy hearing stories about non-UCLA things that happened during UCLA's run. Because so few of those teams actually won titles they don't get as much share of the game's lore. 15 or so year span where I know very little about anyone other than UCLA

Next best player on the team was Danny Hester.

Your right! That was a longtime ago and I remembered PC & Barnes dominating in the first half and him not playing in the second alf. Forgot he injured the knee. Stacom was the 2G on that team.

PC only played seven guys and when Barnes went down it ended any hopes they had. He was their only big guy. They were pretty much running Memphis off the court till he got hurt. Even Gene Bartow said we were in a lot of trouble till Barnes got hurt.

Wonder what petes shots per game was compared to ernie. Both were great, but ernie was barely 6 ft tall. Remember him and mcadoo on that buffalo NBA team, sitting at the bar at corcorans on south orange ave...

While true Ernie was not the player Pistol Pete was it is a little unfair to compare to probably the greatest college player of all time. Ernie was a dam good player himself and went on to be rookie of year in NBA before getting hurt an injury that pretty much ended his career

I agree. The thought of making that comparison would never randomly come to my mind. But someone else called Ernie D "a smaller version of Pistol Pete Maravich" so it was on...

Stacom was an excellent player

Barnes injury and Bob Lanier's injury at the Final 4 were enormous blows to the East having a shot at 2 National Championships.

Lanier was the biggest guys I ever stood next to-----and then I met Shaq. :):):)
